Bettie laughed at William, about to open her mouth to joke back, and all of a sudden it was serious. …Right. Well, she supposed it was coming to her. She squirmed uncomfortably in her chair, whining. She didn’t mind talking about emotions when they weren’t directly affecting her. Ugh. She did miss William, of course, but, she was the reason they hadn’t talked. And not she had to apologise and shit, and she hated apologising. Her pride was too big to swallow without first cutting it up in to small bite-sized pieces. She leaned in to his hug, and tugged on his hair to get him away. She’d figured out what she was going to say.
Bettie puffed her cheeks out, leaning against William’s arm. “I’ve been trying to give you space,” she shrugged. “I mean… I,” gross,” miss you, too, but, I.” Super gross. She hated talking about her feelings. It was like torture. Worse. “I remember completely blowing you off when I’ve had any of my girlfriend, and I guess I wanted you to be able to do the same thing to me. But that’s a difference, because I’ve never had anything even remotely encompassing a real relationship. But I guess, if we must, we have to make two relationships work at once.” She grinned, rolling her eyes over to William. “I love you, Willy.”
William huffed out a breath, sinking further into the chair. It was weird how open Bettie made him feel sometimes about his feelings, when she was so closed off about hers. Maybe he did it to compensate, or to make it easier for her, or maybe it was just because they really looked like twins separated at birth. “You don’t have to do that,” he tilted his head at her, trying to gauge how hard to push this. “I don’t want to have to do that.” He stretched his legs in front of him, Marziporn jumping off his lap to bound off somewhere else in peace. “It’s not something that I have to balance- well, yeah it is.” He huffed in frustration, because this was coming out all wrong. “I guess what I mean is that I don’t have a quota for how much I care, so I don’t have to share it amongst everyone? So it doesn’t really matter.”
“I love you too,” William grinned, getting to his feet and grabbing Bettie’s hand to pull her up with him. “So,” he started, falling into step beside her, “We’re going to leave here and we’re going to talk, okay?” He was still grinning, feeling so good about finally talking to his best friend again. “Because I’ve heard some things about a pool party and I know you wouldn’t miss a chance to look at a good majority of the student body half naked.” They were turning corners and he wasn’t really sure where they were going, but he couldn’t find that he minded much.

Her stomach squirmed with a mix of anxi… anxious…ity? Anxiousity? Anxiety. Anxiety. Of course. She couldn’t even get the word. Her stomach squirmed with a mix of anxiety and happiness that William was now next to her. But she found the former was winning out. His voice was quiet as he moved to tuck a piece of hair behind her ear, her skin prickling lightly where he touched her. She blinked, quite blankly, at him. She knew that he could see the tears that had managed to stupidly let themselves slide down her cheeks. Megan looked at William, trying her hardest to keep it together. But she couldn’t. Coming somewhere from deep, deep inside of her, she hiccuped a sob. She immediately closed her eyes, not wanting him to see that she was pretty broken up.
He pulled at her hands gently, guiding her to sit upright. She looked down at her lap, moving her hand to play with the stitching on her jeans. Really, though, they weren’t actually her jeans. They were William’s jeans that she had insisted on wearing even though they were too long and too wide. Instead of taking that in to consideration, she simply rolled up the cuffs to sit mid-calf length, and bunched up the top in a pair of rainbow suspenders that she wrapped around her waist twice. She’d gone up to get changed straight after her lessons and put them on instead of her own. Although she didn’t want to look at him, she rested her cheek against his hand, as opposed to just letting him hold her there.
She hung on to his words as he spoke, listening to his story, until he stopped. Her stomach lurched in her chest because she knew he wasn’t done Oh, of course. “These are yours,” she said, deflecting. She stretched her legs out beside him and tiptoed her fingers down her leg. “I don’t know why, but they were in my stuff, so I put them on. I had to wrap these around,” Megan pulled her shirt up, revealing the suspenders she put around the top. “And also I had to roll them up. You’re really tall.” She still wasn’t looking, because she knew if she did, she would spill her guts out. Sighing, she crawled towards William, easing herself into his lap, and nuzzling in to the crook in his neck. “Today was bad.”
William didn’t know what to do and that frustrated him. He hated not knowing how to comfort Megan, or what to say, or exactly what was wrong because she was so quiet. Usually it was easier because they talked about absolutely everything with each other, but if he didn’t know, he couldn’t help, and that hurt. A sob shook Megan’s body, and his heart started to beat harder in his chest, almost a throb. It was so weird, so strange, because he’d never felt such a physical reaction to someone else’s pain before, except Emily’s. When she closed her eyes, he moved his face closer to hers, kissing her cheek gently, just sitting.
It was a small comfort, Megan crawling into his lap like she really wanted to be there. His hands trailed idly over her- his jeans, over the colourful suspenders that would have made him laugh and shake his head fondly if they weren’t in the situation they were. He made his way up her side, stroking her hip, her arm, her cheek. He pressed a kiss into her hair, right behind her ear, and sighed. “I’m so sorry,” he murmured, wrapping his arms around her middle, tightening them every time she shifted.
William moved until his back was against the back of the couch, and they had as much privacy as possible. The common room was mostly quiet, and everyone was avoiding them more so out of kindness than anything else. “I’m not tall, you’re just small,” he whispered, his eyes squinting as he grinned at her, and then nudged her cheek with his nose. “I-” he started and stopped, preparing what he wanted to say in his head before he spoke it out loud. “I know that you know that if you looked at me right now, you’d tell me what was wrong. That’s not a bad thing at all. If- if it helps,” he paused again, trailing a firm pattern up and down her back with his hands. “If it helps, talk to me. I love you, and I want to help.” It had been a while since a particularly bad day.

Studying was hard. It was hard, and it was boring, and it was really silly, too. Especially Divination, oh my God. Most boring class ever award definitely went to dear old Professor Trelawney. Megan liked her, she did, with her funny hair and her huge bug-eyes glasses, and her fashion sense was absolutely fab, but Megan could barely remember dreams she’d had right after she’d woken up, let alone writing them down to analyze. And Professor was always harping about how Megan didn’t have the Sight, which was frustrating, because she never really expected to have the Sight, but only joined the class because she wanted to drink the tea to get her tealeaves.
But that aside, she had Ancient Runes to do. Another subject she was kicking herself for picking. Why Ancient Runes? Why would you pick that? Maybe because she closed her eyes and pointed randomly at classes to pick in third year. And Professor Hurst hated Megan, so she never asked questions. She simply sat in the back of the classroom trying not to give herself a headache from note taking. She had three text books sprawled out in front of her, as she lied on her stomach in the common room, chewing on her quill and kicking her legs in the air. And it was frustrating, because she should have been able to do this. She should have. But she couldn’t. All the little characters became a jumbled up mess as she tried to translate Goblin Stories into English. It was doing her head in, and her eyes were jumbling up the runes and the translations and the stories and everything was a mess.
She felt tears well up in her eyes, and she rolled over to her back, wiping furiously at her face with her sleeves, angry and upset. She groaned, trying to clear her head, as she put her hands over her eyes. “I just don’t get it,” she grumbled under her breath. Why was she always confused, and always horrible and always just so bad at everything? She slumped into the floor in defeat, lying still but for her usually twitching of her fingers. She tried to deep breathe, but wasn’t really getting anywhere, and oh, Merlin. Useless Megan Morrow. Again.
William tapped the barrels outside the Common Room, and then stepped inside when he wasn’t squirted in the face with vinegar. He looked around, yawning and scratching through his hair as he quickly made plans to go up to his dorm and collapse onto his bed for the next 12 hours. He walked past a couple of girls that he recognised as friends of Rebecca’s, and smiled at them tiredly when one waved enthusiastically at him prior to looking back at her friend’s game of Wizard Chess. He was halfway to the stairs when he spied Megan behind the biggest couch in the room, surrounded by a mountain of books and even more parchment. She was instantly better than any other plan he could remember having. Instead of the cold sheets of his bed, he just wanted to cuddle her and listen to any stories she’d be willing to tell him- and then hopefully a situation similar to the good part of that first night at the hospital wing would arise. He dropped his things quietly next to hers and laid down beside her, aligning his knees and hips and arms with hers.
“Hi, he whispered, brushing her hair behind her right ear, the one closest to him, and kissing her nose. Her cheeks were stained with tear tracks, eyes blinking at him before she let out another hiccup. William frowned, trying to think of everything that had happened that day, before seeing scribbles upon scribbles on her parchment, and two broken quills next to her. “Hey, hey, hey,” he whispered, tugging her hands until she was sitting upright, still stubbornly not looking at him. “Talk to me,” he pleaded, pushing the rest of her hair falling over her forehead over her left ear, and cupping her face in his hands. “Were Trelawney’s tangents especially horrible today? I remember last year when I did divination, and I had to sit there and listen to a story about a toad and firewhiskey, and an ogre-” He stopped, paranoid that he was only making things worse. “Megs, please.”

Bettie was dancing with her favourite dance partner of all time. Marziporn. He was the worst cat in the entire world- just horrible all the time. He lived in Legs’s knickers draw and his favourite place to wake up was Willco’s face. Worst Cat Award, consecutively won for at least the past three years. But you know, he was an excellent dancer. Had some great moves.
They were waltzing down the stairs, perfectly happy. Bettie was humming under her breath and holding one of Marz’s paws in her hand. A fat little fucker he may be, but he sat nicely on her hip. Of course, under her breath, Bettie wasn’t humming Venetian Gondolas, or any other of that classical rubbish, she was humming Love Shack, by the B-52s. Probably the best song in existence, and shit.
Her singing got louder and louder as she got further and further in to the room, finally reaching a crescendo, as she yelled out “FUCKINGINASHACK! FUCK ING IN A SHACK!” Which were totally the lyrics. At that, Marziporn clawed at her arm, and jumped to the floor, bolting to the couch Bettie was standing behind. “Fucking rudest cat out,” she said, rolling her eyes. She followed her cat’s rapid movements to the other side of the couch, to see William happily patting Marz, and Marz purring like the traitor he was. “Well, krump my face, if it isn’t William Piper.”
William turned around on the couch he was sitting on to face Bettie properly, who had finally gotten his attention with all her noise. "Honestly, Betters. Honestly." He grinned, leaning out of the way as the fat cat swung dangerously close to his face, claws outstretched. When Marziporn was finally free of Bettie's monster grip, he leapt across the room until he was comfortably passed out in William's lap. William petted behind his ears affectionately, unable to keep the small content smile from his face even if he wanted to. Which he didn't.
"Hi, Bettie," He rolled his eyes at her, pulling her sleeve with his free arm until she sort of floomped onto the couch beside him, immediately putting his arm around her. "What is the hip hap? The four one one? I feel-" he paused, looking for the right word, picking at the his robe when he realised his feelings weren't as playful as they'd seemed when she was galloping around the common room. "I miss you. I haven't spoken to you in forever and I- yeah. I really just miss you." He resumed petting Marziporn, but when he looked at Bettie properly he gave her a huge hug instead. His chin was resting against her shoulder, and he squirmed when he felt something tugging at his hair. "Wh- oh I- ow, Bettie!"

Rosalie blinked for a second. Not because a boy was yelling at her, that was almost frequent, but because he was British. She’d apparently forgotten she was in Scotland now, where the Brits roamed free. Wild and out of their cages. She opened her mouth to reply to him, and for second, was so sure that a lovely Scottish brogue would emit from between her lips. But, alas. Her American accent. “Come to my arms, my beamish boy! Oh frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!“And in case he didn’t get that that was ‘yes, I require assistance’, in Muldrow Speak, or more, Lewis Carroll Speak, she added, “Do you, perchance, know a thing or two about Gillyweed and the uses of?”
He seemed about her age, with a rambunctious head of hair. His robes where yellow, like she actually knew what that meant. She’d noticed a blonde thing run up and attach herself to his lips for a minute, earlier, and almost choked back a sob, that was really a laugh. She’d missed boys. Being in an all girls school in Madrid had done wonders for her tan, but had certainly not helped her sex drive.
Rosalie pulled out her lipstick, coating her lips in the dark red make up. She smacked her lips together and used her index finger to blot. She, again, found herself, looking at how nice her shoes made her legs look. She heard him walk over to her, and smiled to herself, inclining her head to her right. “It’s the motivation,” she said, before he had the chance to sit down, “I know I should, but I just can’t seem to. I give myself very good advice, but I very seldom follow it.” She turned her head to look at him, very obviously checking him out, before shrugging, and blinking as if she thought nothing of it. Which she didn’t. “Salutations,” she nodded, “I’m Rosalie Muldrow.”
Contrary to popular belief, William wasn’t dim. He wasn’t stupid, he wasn’t oblivious. He knew what flirting looked like from years of watching girls like Dom when they were acting interested in a guy, and honestly, if he’d been best friends with Bettie for years and not picked up on the ways in which she blatantly went out of her way to get someone’s attention, he would have had to be perpetually comatose. So the reapplying of the lipstick and the sultry sighs weren’t as subtle as he thought she was hoping. William laughed under his breath, smiling genuinely as he dusted himself off and moved over to her. “Lewis Carroll, right? My Mum loves him, and used to quote him to me all the time when I was little; a lot like you were actually.” He rubbed the back of his neck, feeling a chill here in the shade that there wasn’t earlier in the sun. He looked up to her as if to ask for permission before reaching for her paper, seeing a messy scrawl that he wouldn’t have expected. True to her word, she had written “THERE ARE NONE” in large, thick script.
“I don’t agree with you here though, I mean-” He stopped himself, feeling rude. William crossed his legs and turned towards her, holding his hand out. “I’m sorry, I should have- my name is William. I’m in sixth year, and a Hufflepuff.” He gestured towards his robes. “You were in my Herbology class on Wednesday, I think, when we got this essay? I mean, I’ve already finished it, because I love Herbology, but I remember seeing you for the first time. Are you new?” She didn’t sound like she was from Europe- he heard a distinct American accent, familiar from all the time he and Emily spent with his Dad in Boston. “Nice to meet you, Rosalie.”
“I know exactly what you mean- Herbology is probably the only class I’m actually good at. I leave everything else to the last minute.” He grinned again, feeling comfortable enough to pick up the rest of her papers. The big kiss mark and various exes and ohs made him laugh properly. He glanced at her over the top of the stack incredulously. “How exactly did things work wherever you’re from? I take it you’ve met Loring?”

Rosalie was sitting outside in the courtyard, underneath a tree. She had a whole forest’s worth of parchment scattered out around her. Apparently, she’d missed out on a lot over the past term or so. It wasn’t particularly hard, but motivation was her stickler. Always would be, she assumed. She took another look at the essay she was supposed to be writing. It was for a dude named Loring, and she’d only had him for one lesson, but that was long enough to understand he was a complete asshole.
She was mid-sentence, and it was no where near as long as it should have been, but she decided that she’d said all she needed to say. She pressed her lips to the paper, leaving a huge, red, kiss-mark. She put somexs andos underneath it for emphasis, and folded it to put in the pile of ‘finished’ work.
Rosalie stretched her legs out in front of her, admiring the way her Jimmy Choos looked against the green of the grass. Maybe she shouldn’t have been wearing her Jimmy Choos to be walking around the campus in, but whatever. She had another three pairs in her trunk, anyway. And she could always get daddy to send her some more if she ever ran out of expensive footwear.
She brought out another piece of parchment, looking over her carefully compiled homework list, and got to work on another essay on The Importance of Gillyweed in Society. Rolling her eyes, and puffing out her cheeks, she wrote, THERE ARE NONE, in huge block letters across the page. Honestly, it was a stupid topic. Stupid subject. Fuck plants. She would quote T.S. Eliot, if even out of context. I am no prophet—and here’s no great matter.
Sometimes William just needed to lie down in the sun. It didn’t matter that someone had spilt pumpkin juice on his trouser leg, or that he kept hearing giggles from behind him, or that an hour ago Megan had strolled up to him and given him a big, wet kiss on the mouth as a surprise and he’d hit his head so hard on the bench behind him she’d immediately pulled her wand out, apologising profusely, and quickly mended the small cut. “I’m good at those, remember,” she’d whispered, kissing him again and skipping off, shouting, “I’m meeting Grayson, bye!”
Regardless, he’d been lying there all day, and didn’t really feel like moving any time soon. It was the weekend, and he didn’t have any classes. His right foot was tucked over his left, his arms were behind his head, and the birds were chirping. He’d chosen a spot mostly hidden away from everyone, except the small clusters that frequented the spot because of how nice it was to study in on a warm, dry day.
“‘The importance of Gillyweed in society?’ THERE IS NONE!” William opened his eyes curiously, looking over at whoever had spoken. There was a small girl he recognised as the new sixth-year Ravenclaw sitting by herself, surrounded by parchment, with a huge scowl on her face. He hesitated for a second, remembering what had happened recently when he had tried to get involved with other people’s business, but sat up anyway. William shielded his eyes from the sun with one hand, squinting through his glasses. “Hey! Are you okay?”

Ace slumped back, more relaxed. This was her comfort-zone, where people were irritated by her and they lost themselves. But the foothold she carved felt loose and just, she couldn’t understand what William was going on about. He was making an effort which only a few people made once she had accepted them – and don’t you dare think she had accepted William Piper. He was going to be the last person she was going to make herself vulnerable to, if this was what he was asking.
“Look,” She took a drag and snubbed out the cigarette slowly. “It’s as accurate as ever. It doesn’tjust see what you have going on in your silly head at that moment but of who you’re going to become and that’s where it puts you.” Ace explained, impatiently. He needed to go. She appreciated him lighting her first smoke, but that was not an invitation for her to spill her soul. Only one person had access, and that was partial. She nodded her dismissal and turned her eyes somewhere else, fully expecting him to go. What would he gain from just going on to her? What the actual fuck did he think he was going to accomplish? He was a stupi-did he just stop? Her eyes snapped back to him and for a moment, she looked as taken back as she felt. But her hackles just rose and she had to resist the urge to bare her teeth at him. Just go away, Pipes.
Ace stood, shouldering her bag in the same smooth motion. “Never admit I was,” Her eyes racked at him from head to toe, and all she came to the conclusion of was Hufflepuff. She sighed, and with a roll of her eyes, addressed him yet again. “What do you want? You’ve tooted at me long enough, just say what you will and leave me alone.”
They couldn’t help each other, if that was what he was purposing. All she could do was make him as awful as her, and all he could do was make her as soft as him. They had nothing to offer and it was past time William saw that.
William ground his teeth together, sick of trying to reach out to her when obviously any and all of his efforts were futile. "Nothing, I-" he paused, sighing, finally collecting all his things to move back to his dorm. "Nevermind." With his feet on the ground, he looked back at Ace and attempted a small smile, but couldn't make it reach his eyes as much as he tried. There was something wrong, but maybe it wasn't his place to try and fix it, as much as he wanted it to be.
He raised a hand to his chest to wave a quick, subtle goodbye as he turned on his heel and made his way back to the corridor. Nice going, Piper. He groaned, hitching his bag higher on his shoulder with one hand and rubbing his face with the other. Nice going.
