Design Style Board – Created by M. Williams, Williams’ Haven
“Redesigning your home on a budget is not about redecorating to create a picture-perfect home.
It’s about starting with what you have, adding furnishings and accessories to fill in the gaps,
and ending with a space that reflects your personality and makes you smile.”
To be honest, redesigning a home on a budget is challenging, but it can be done once you know what to do.
I’m going to provide 6 key steps to follow when redesigning your home. Let’s get started…
1. Know Your Design Style

Is your design style Traditional, Contemporary or a combination of the two – Transitional? Or is your style French Country, English Country, Rustic, Tuscan, or Modern? There are many different design styles. Knowing what you like or what type of styles you are drawn to will make redesigning easier.
Take a Style Quiz – If you don’t know what your style is, taking a quiz will help you identify your style. Search the Internet for a home decor style quiz. What’s William’s Haven design style? Visit my Twitter page to find out.
Create a Design Style Board – Like the one above. Use the Internet and magazines to find pictures of decorated rooms, furnishings, and accessories. Attach them to any kind of paper or board – poster boards, or virtual boards, you can find on the Internet. Don’t put a lot of thought into the pictures or rooms. There are no wrong or right answers. Just select the items you are drawn to and like. Now, review the board – you will begin to see a pattern. For example your pictures, furnishings, and accessories may lean towards one specific style or maybe it’s a combination of several or more – that’s Eclectic!
The budget, is something we don’t like to talk about. It would be great if we all had unlimited budgets, but the reality is we don’t.
Think about how to get “the most bang for your bucks,” when your budget is on a shoestring. For example:
Your sofa needs to be recovered. It’s not in the budget this year to purchase a sofa or to have it professionally reupholstered. Think about purchasing a slipcover.

Or if you can sew, use your sewing skills to make a slipcover. This loveseat sits in my great room. I made the slipcover for this loveseat. It was not in the budget to have the entire slipcover sewed professionally. So, I sewed the body, back and side cushions. I had the seat cushions sewed professionally. This reduced the expense for a custom fitted slipcover and gives my loveseat a reupholstered look.
3. Planning & Removing Clutter
Planning – Use the Internet and magazines for inspiration when redesigning your home or apartment. Don’t try to redesign every room or take on too many redesign projects for the year. Prioritize – select the rooms in your home or apartment that need the most help. Then identify the furnishings and accessories that are needed the most, in order to complete your rooms. Review your budget to determine what you will be able to accomplish this year. For the rooms that you don’t plan to redesign this year make them livable and comfortable.
Clutter – Remember the proverb, “A place for everything and everything in its place.” Sometimes we think that a room needs to be redesigned, however, after removing the clutter, we find it’s not so bad after all and you can put off redesigning the room for another year.
4. Repurpose and Reuse What You Own
This is the time to sort through your furnishings and accessories and remove some of the items that no longer work in your decor. Think about giving them away, donating, or storing them for future use.
Before giving away or donating an item, determine if it can serve another purpose or be used differently in your home.
I repurpose and reuse many furnishings and accessories in my home. For example:
I have an olive oil bottle that once contained oil. I now use it as an accessory.
On the top of my kitchen cabinets I repurposed several items, a picnic basket, dinner plate, and a wine bottle. They are used now as accessories in the kitchen. This saved me money, so I don’t have to purchase as many accessories.

Or maybe you don’t have a coffee table and you don’t have the money in your budget to purchase one this year, use an ottoman as a table.

5. Color and Color Schemes
Look to the Internet and magazines for ideas and inspiration. One easy way to select colors, pull colors from decor items like rugs, curtains, pillows and paintings.
