Yule DIY: Mini Herb Wreaths

Here is another simple Yule DIY that anyone can make. It can be used as a simple decoration or as a way to protect/bless your house!  There are so many tutorials on the internet of this, so if my instrustions aren’t the best feel free to look this up! I’ve made herb wreaths before and it is a great way to make your home smell wonderful!

What You Will Need:

Fresh Herb Sprigs of your pick (I highly suggest Rosemary, Thyme, Sage, & Lavender.) Make sure the clippings still have a bit of the steam on them.

Twine or Colored Ribbon of your pick

Mini embroidery hoops (optional)

Floral Wire

What to Do:

If you are using the embroidery hoops take them apart, you only want to use the smaller hoop (the one without clamps). Start tying the herbs you picked out to the hoop with the floral wire. You want to try to overlap end to top to get a cleaner look. Once your hoop is covered tie a piece of ribbon or twine to your wreath and you are done! You can use a long piece of ribbon to create a garland or keep them separate. Its totally up to you!

If you aren’t using an embroidery hoop to make your wreath, start lining up your sprigs all in the same direction. This is where you make your pattern if you are using different herbs. Once you have your sprigs in the shape you want (remember you can slightly bend the sprigs to help you get a circle!) start connecting the sprigs together with the floral wire. Once your wreath is to your liking tie a piece of ribbon to it and bam! You are done.

You can always change the size of these wreaths to fit whatever space you want!

us witches get colds too

hello greenies! i’ve been getting sicker and sicker as the seasons change and so have my fellow witches. this is a loose recipe that i use for colds and i hope it can help. sorry if the measurements aren’t exact! 

for kettle:

4 cups of water

2 lemons

chopped ginger (an inch? maybe less depending on how strong you want it)

a small handful of peppermint (i have the hands of a child)

2 sticks on cinnamon

honey (will put in at the end)

for cup

1 cup of water

¼ of an inch of ginger

a few of leaves of peppermint

half a stick ( if you have powder use like 1 tsp?) of cinnamon

honey (will put in at the end)

directions

heat up water until it comes to a nice low boil/simmer. place ginger, peppermint, and cinnamon in. 

after 4 minutes place thyme and lemon.

***for the lemon make sure you cut in half, squeeze out, and place the peels in the water (for kettles place 1 of the lemon shells in the water, for cup place a few slices). let sit for another 4 minutes. then when done put in cups!

put in as much honey as you want! (i use about a tablespoon per cup) stir clockwise and chant:

“Frost in the body, cast out.

Mother Earth bring to me health and wellness.

Bring to me the warmth of spring.

Frost in the body, cast out.”  

visualize a green light flowing into the cup as you chant and as you drink that same light travels into you.

Salt Your Sigils, Walk With Chalk

There are few things we consistently have with us when we leave the house: keys, wallet/phone and clothes. Of those clothes you wear, they change daily, but your shoes may not.

There’s tons of folklore about shoes and steps and turns of phrase, so why not use them as a tool?

There’s the helm of awe on the heels, moons and star on the inside heel, and an all seeing eye.

Why not draw the sigils you need on the soles of your shoes? Use some chalk and hop to it! Protection, travel, speed, discretion, do some hex work by writing the name of someone on the soles and spend the day trampling them.

Alternatively, you can draw on brick, walls, the ground and possibly shoes (haven’t tried) with salt.

You can get salt rocks online for a few bucks and they’ll last a loooong time. Treat them like chalk, when scraped against rough surfaces they leave a white trail and it’s an easy and less mess way of carrying salt with you for Witching on the go.

Draw a circle wherever you feel the need to do a working, sigils, staves, symbols, gliphs, anything you would trace or draw can have extra oomph behind it by physically drawing it with something of the earth.

I saw this post by @cosmic-witch and realized… I don’t think I’ve ever seen correspondences written up for types of wine before! So I spent some time and put some together based on their flavors/aromas/etc. Enjoy, wine-loving witches!

Hekate: 30 Days of Devotion: Offerings

In antiquity, it was common to clean your home and leave all old food at the crossroads for Hekate. It fed the poor and the stray dogs along with other animals that would come along. It worked in that symbiotic way I have described before where the well off honored the Goddess and were cleansed of miasma, and the poor were taken care of in her name.

Much the same, sacrifices of dogs (no longer a practice), garlic, onion, and eggs were used to cleanse miasma and given to the Goddess completely (they were not shared or consumed by the devotee).

Special meals were often prepared for Hekate and sometimes shared. Like many Greek deities, she enjoyed bread, honey, cheese, and wine likely because they were niceties that required a level of sacrifice to be given up. Oil, cakes, fish, fruit, milk, and Ampiphion (cheesecake with candles) are also common offerings.

Incense was also offered to her in scents such as olibanum, myrrh, bay, storax, juniper, cypress, lavander, rosemary, thyme, and kyphy.

Living flame, whether a candle or an entire fire, is also an honorable offering.

In my own experience, the Goddess loves pomegranate and dark chocolate. I burn incense for her that is dark, heavy, and full of spices (black magic, egyptian musk, opium, dragons blood, nag champa etc.). On the New Moon I light candles and let them burn out. I have also been known to give portions of my meals to her and share pieces of any baked goods or other treats that I eat.

I also burn jasmine incense cones at the front of my home, by the door, on the New Moon and I like to bring her Greek food whenever possible. I have given her pieces of lamb from my gyro and baklava from the local Greek resturant. I also had the opportunity to visit a Greek festival last month and bring her a special cake filled with nuts and fruits… very heavy on the cinnamon and, I think, nutmeg. I wish I could remember what it was called.
