Hey does anybody have any advice or know any tips? I've always wanted to know how to do something.
[this is heavily paraphrased from www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAGTwBURBXc titled easy budget minecraft servers with crafty. download it via yt downloader (available on github) or another vid downloader service (yt boycott (if youre participating)]
in order to run a mc server, obtain a spare pc (or laptop) with an i5 or i7 processor (theres probably some nuance idk tho) and install debian on that thang with a bootable media.
during installation make it an ssh server (uncheck everything but the last two boxes)
then install casa os with some link from github (i cant advice you here) then open up casa os on your main computers browser.
from now on you shouldn't need a screen for the server.
from there install crafty controller (mc server setup with gui (not a lot of linux stuff has gui, whih is why i specify)).
you do want to reserve an ip address for the computer you're running your server on, so youll want to open your routers website on a separate computer to do so. theyre are all different, so youll have to research that. do note that reserving an ip is different than buying a static ip. reserving an ip should be free.
once you have crafty installed make sure it has its own folder group (casa os has issues with permissing certain things, so you do need to switch it sometimes)
after you have it working, open up a mc world! you do have to specify how much ram you want to give to each world, so remember to leave your os something! leaving the os at least one gig is good. for the mc world (of course, depending on player count) 4 to 9 gigs is solid. the mc wiki (the official one) says that 9 gigs is the best.
you can automate backups and use those backups to move worlds over to new servers.
you will need to use a port forwarding service for the most non convoluted way to open the server to the eveyone, but the video lists a free one.
