oh hellos aesthetics by album
The Oh Hellos: a winding road at midnight, a gnarled old beech tree, running as fast as you can from a fear you can’t name, giving everything you have for your siblings, smoke in the air, soft humming, coming home to a cold house, learning to love again after years of heartache, breaking down the walls you’ve built around yourself.
Through The Deep Dark Valley: the first rays of sunlight poking over the mountains, kicking pebbles on the road, a narrow stream winding through a gorge, love at first sight, advice from an old man with regrets, realising that the woman you love is something other than human, feeling that your parents will never understand you, running away with the handsome stranger at the gate, sleeping on a freight train, looking at your reflection and seeing a stranger, weeping over your mistakes, letting the rain wash you clean of fear, exploring granite caves in the mountainside, vowing to be better than your parents were.
Dear Wormwood: wind chimes in the early morning, dancing with your lover but being unable to meet their eyes, sitting under a willow tree beside a stream, playing the lyre, wakings up before the sunrise, grass and soft moss, watching blue fog on the hills, confronting your unfaithful lover, burning everything that reminded you of them, cherry blossoms in the breeze, learning to succumb to the forces of nature, waiting for your love to repent of their destructive ways, knowing that it’s hopeless, walking through a ruined city, meeting a grinning stranger who seems familiar, victory after a battle, a single violin in a darkened graveyard, finally seeing your enemy for who they are, breaking your chains, running through green hills, shouting for sheer joy because you’re free.
Notos: standing on the top of a mountain and hearings whispers in the wind, being part of something bigger than yourself, refusing to be afraid, glow-in-the-dark stars on your bedroom ceiling, whispering secrets to your sibling in the night, seeing shapes in the stars, dark wood and indigo silk, feeling the universe move around you, heavy clouds on the horizon, the smell of ozone, dancing barefoot in a thunderstorm, being frightened by the destructive power of your words, wild waves at sea, being soaked by the salt spray, gold veins running through blue marble, a river winding between the hills, giving in to God’s plan for you, a stream of taillights on the highway at 2 am, falling asleep in the back of a car.
Eurus: pearly silk sheets, your love’s bare shoulder in the moonlight, bloodying your hands to fix your mistakes, broken marble pillars, branches stirring in the dust, ivy on crumbling stone walls, remembering the wilderness of your childhood, attempting an impossible task again and again, cursing the old gods, stealing golden rings from the rich, cloven hooves in a forest clearing, dancing to the sound of a drum, realising your life is worth living now, breaking the cycle of your mistakes, tiny birds fluttering in the grass, the red tail of a fox fleeing for cover, begging the Lord for forgiveness, feathers in the wind, hands smelling of petrol and despair, opening your door and letting in the cold wind, finding peace at last.
Boreas: Dying embers glowing red in the night, a line of caravans moving slowly across the hinterlands, wind whistling through pine trees, paw prints in the snow, sitting by the fire, water dripping like molten gold in the candlelight, looking in through a frosted window at riches you’ll never have, feeling like your language can’t express everything you feel, frost on roses, long garden paths lined with green hedges, snow on black fur, wolves running across the tundra, whorls of smoking rising over the winter forest, dust motes illuminated in a sunbeam, rough hardwood floors, feeling like your life means nothing, the splintering of ice, breath misting in the cold air, studying ancient maps, travelling north, pebbled beaches and black rock, redefining yourself, becoming content with an ordinary life.
