I can’t believe some people criticize the inevitable discussions about how nonhuman identity is connected to queerness, race, disability, etc and how we actually have an identity with a tangible impact on the world that should be on par with others in how respected it is/deserves to be – all because “Tumblr social justice had to go make otherkin political.” Identifying as nonhuman will never be divorced from the context of the world we live in. The nonhuman is political.
And the first place you can see that in in how our community has a serious issue with not uplifting, making room for, and putting nonhuman-IDing BIPOC’s voices up front, as people from groups that were very literally stripped of their humanity and still are. If you’re white and nonhuman, you have a privilege that allows you to toss aside humanity comfortably, something that not everyone in our communities can do.
There are BIPOC in our communities who don’t feel comfortable or safe even mentioning their race in the same space as their nonhuman identities and vice versa because of racism, and we need to fix that. I don’t know how, because I don’t know what the needs of nonhuman-IDing BIPOC are in that department, but like. I give a shit and want to know. I am open to listening and making changes. We just really need to do better than we’ve done for BIPOC in our spaces over the past 6 decades of recognizing ourselves as elves, faeries, wolves, Pokemon, etc.
There are so many other reasons that being otherkin is gonna be political whether you like it or not, but even the core meaning of our identities is inherently political because we cannot live freely as nonhuman while other people are violently oppressed by being stripped of that same humanity. Denial of humanity impacts many marginalized groups in different ways, but for BIPOC but it’s impacted them in such a specific way and I think in 2020 especially we (especially white people) can just like, take a step back and start realizing that it doesn’t matter if it’s “a spiritual belief” for you, or if we’re “not oppressed for being kin,” or whatever – this shit doesn’t exist in a vacuum and it’s irresponsible to act like it does.
Otherkin identity is political and has consequences – for some people more than others. it might be hard for some people to accept, but it’s never going away, and being angry at the people who aren’t afraid to point it out is only going to benefit the privileged.
You look to the stars. You don’t belong here. This place is wrong. This form is wrong. You belong out there. Home is a place they haven’t discovered yet. This isn’t where you belong. You wake up. You look up to the stars.

bring in the harvest and hold it in your hands. months of toil, years of soil, and the eternal, weeping rain– so much falls into you. All of that is over now, but you will not be gone. the wind has carried your seeds away, and the honeybee dances around the honey of your heart, and I– calloused, muddy and worn– will hold this season one my back as I have held others, shrugging spring on heavy shoulders.
