At least the sound of Winnie commiserating helped Pilar’s mood. She relaxed just a little at the girl’s presence - somehow, there was less of a wall when it came to Winnie than there would be with most other people here. Perks of having mothers that got fucked over together, she supposed. “It’s, like, messed up,” she agreed, wrinkling her nose at the anchovies in question and shutting the boxes. “Whoever was in charge of this clearly dropped the ball somewhere along the line. Maybe the good stuff is underneath?”

It was nice to know Pilar was on her side. In the major stuff, like their moms getting screwed over, of course. But the small stuff mattered too, like how much these anchovy pizzas sucked. “M-maybe...” She peered down the table, trying to see if there were more pizza boxes somewhere else. “Not even a plain cheese? Who forgets to order a plain cheese?! Isn’t th-that th-the first th-thing you ask for?” Not that she’d ever planned a party or gathering of any kind where she would need multiple pizzas.

It had been rather easy, conflating ‘band club’ with ‘jazz band’ – as far as Emir was concerned, the majority of universities did not consider bands centered around rock as official clubs. Alas, meant to blend in as one of the hip young cool students, his audition had somehow taken enough of a shine… Very prog rock of them to include him. A relief it was, however, that someone else had joined with an instrument only slightly associated with rock. (Yes, the keys made many appearances, but piano itself had eventually become few and far between.) A new request, directed at her, that found him shaking his head in a rare moment of amusement. Leaning over, he added, “‘Simple Man’ is on the set.” A lie, but they would be none the wiser until everybody was leaving. “I should hope that scratches your Lynyrd Skynyrd itch.”

Emir was an odd one but then, so was Winnie. Their club hadn’t been active very long but it was clear that both of them had originally wanted to be a part of the school’s planned Jazz ensemble, not necessarily the strange mishmash they’d ended up in. She respected his decision to stick with it, though, especially given his instrument of choice. Her piano was relatively easy to switch genres on, the trumpet was much more complicated.

When the requester nodded and made their way back to wherever they came from, she turned to her companion. “We didn’t actually add ‘Simple M-Man’ to rh-the request list, did we?” She asked, confused by his suggestion. “Because I do not know how to play th-that.”

In a break between songs, Winnie took a moment to stand and stretch out her back. Keeping good posture at her piano exhausted her after a while and she needed to feel like she was cracking her vertebrae. What she really wanted was a cigarette (damn past Winnie for picking up the habit while trying to look cool) but she didn’t have any. As she leaned forward to try to touch her toes (and hopefully crack her back) she didn’t notice someone approaching her until their shoes entered her field of vision. “If you’re here to request Free Bird,” she spoke, strained from her leaned over position. “I’ll tell you what I told th-the last guy,” as she spoke she straightened back up, looking the other person in the eye. “It’s not on th-the list, and it’s not even a good song. Stop asking.”

Pilar frowned as she scanned the table, manicured nail idly tapping her commemorative plate. She flicked open another box of pizza and rolled her eyes at it as someone came to stand beside her. “Why are literally all the pizzas I’m finding covered in anchovies?” she complained, half to herself and half to the lucky person who was now here to listen. “Like, there’s no way these are popular enough to be put out first.”

Always a picky eater, potlucks were not the easiest food situation for Winnie. As she walked down the buffet table slowly, she found herself turning her nose up at everything. The chili looked too wet, the sliders looked too dry, and the pizza, god, the pizza! Not even realizing who she was standing beside, she watched as Pilar opened multiple boxes, revealing the atrocious toppings. “Uck!” She let out in almost involuntary agreement with the girl beside her. “Is anyone in th-this town normal? I knew it was weird here, but th-three anchovy pizza is a little m-much!”

Libby wasn’t sure that she had ever felt this nervous, but with the threat of her very first football game looming on the horizon - go fighting cherries! - she thought she might totally lose it. Leo had beamed at her all morning; she was sure she didn’t deserve it, but she still soaked it in like it was Glenda offering her scraps at the table. Harvey had asked her ‘are you sure you wanna do this?’ so many times that having to reassure him felt more like the beginnings of talking herself out of getting on the field at all.

Ugh.

If Libby could have had her way, she would have skipped the potluck altogether. If the coach hadn’t made it mandatory, and if Leo hadn’t been so excited to take pictures of her in her Letterman jacket with the rest of the team, she would probably be hiding out in a quiet corner of the Ladies’ Locker Room. She would probably be repeating some mantra of ‘EAT THEM ALIVE, LIBBY LOGAN!!’ until she felt like she could.

Instead she was biting out a sharp, breathless, “Can you move!” To the body that had so ungraciously backed into her, and fighting the feelings of claustrophobia that were closing in on her from all sides. At least she’d be fired up before the stupid game.

“I’m trying to get out of this crowd before I freakin’ lose it, and you -” Libby was seeing so much red, she wasn’t even sure who she was barking at. Desperation was scarlet, apparently. “Are so not helping the situation, so…”

Throngs of people, all excited to watch a bunch of meatheads knock into each other and throw a weirdly shaped ball. Not exactly Winnie Wu’s cup of tea. But she lived on campus now, and she was on the Student Council! Even if she was just the Treasurer, there was still a certain expectation of school spirit. So there she was, with her stupid commemorative plate, in her stupid CCU sweatshirt, amongst the crowd of people all hyped up about a game she did not understand.

No one noticed Winnie in an empty room, let alone a crowd of people, so she wasn’t surprised to be bumped into, and knocked back into someone else. Getting barbecue sauce on her sweatshirt was less than ideal, as was getting yelled at by the person she’d been knocked into.

“Do you th-think you’re th-the only one having trouble with th-the crowd?!” She asked incredulously, turning around to face the source of the yelling. “Because I don’t know if you noticed, but th-the whole quad is packed with idiots, and one of th-them just bumped into m-me,” a gesture towards her clearly stained sweatshirt as her voice steadily raised in frustration. “Really glad you were strong enough not to continue th-the domino effect, but unless you’re going to yell at th-the entire student body, you’re wasting your time.”

Maddie was naturally a little nosey, it wasn’t that she wanted to dig up the dirt on others or even mildly stir the soil for that matter, she just liked to feel as if she were a part of things. Since that was the case, it was rather fitting that Maddie was in charge of the ledger that contained everybody’s dorm assignments for the semester. She could see where everybody would be living, who they would be sharing their quarters with, with whom they would have neighboring walls and it was all very exciting to her.

As a recent transfer student, she didn’t know everybody on the ledger and it was a perfect opportunity for her to put faces to names and feel like she was contributing something to the CCU community in the process. More comforting than that, however, was to see the gang around the place, despite all that had happened as of late.

“Hey,” Maddie greeted, “Got your assignment yet? I won’t tell if you want to do a little swapsies, there’s still time,” more than half of the names in the ledger remained unmarked, which meant, in Maddie’s exclusive opinion that as the on-duty dorm assignment director, she also had the power to move things around for the right person…or the right price.

She’d spent her first year as a commuter, not quite ready to leave her family home (even if it was only to live in a dorm a mile or so away). This year, though? Her definitely totally first sophomore year? She was taking the plunge. Dorm living! She’d never so much as had a sleepover before, let alone a roommate, so the idea kind of terrified her. But, like her father said when he dropped her off that day, the only way to get over your fears was to actually face them.

“Uh, no? Th-that’s why I’m here. At th-the table? To get m-my assignment? From...you?” Winnie recognized Maddie, of course. The two had been coworkers over the summer when she’d started working at Surf’s Up, but they hadn’t exactly become close.

“Are you offering ‘swapsies’ to everyone?” She asked, raising an eyebrow. “And how m-many people have actually taken you up on it so far?”

Ozzy nodded along as she spoke. It wasn’t so much a problem of a ride, but of how much attention he would draw to himself by leaving early. No one was going to do anything to him at the drive-in, not with so many people around and the Southside trying to put on a good face, but without the crowd around him he was sure someone would probably be waiting in the shadows. His safest bet was to leave with everyone else, but it didn’t take away his urge to say fuck it and take his chances. Why had he even come in the first place?

“Agreed, but I think I’m just gonna stick it out,” he sighs, “Wanna go get a lane or something? Maybe it’ll be more fun.”

Without a ride of her own, she too was sort of stuck. Note to self: get the flat on your bike fixed, then you can easily get away from boring events like this. Lacking that bike, though, she had no choice but to stick around. Usually she’d avoid other people, rebuke their offers of shared time and activities, and end up going home early, annoyed that she’d wasted her time. Being stuck as she was, though...

“Sure,” she shrugged, accepting his offer. “Obviously not into the m-movie, and I like bowling so... why not?”

Parker wasn’t really a gamer. He preferred more practical versions of fun. Actually…his dad consistently kicked his ass in Madden 99. So really…he just sucked at games and resented them because of it. Even so, he felt drawn into the arcade. He couldn’t hover around Ozzy all night even if he desperately wanted to. So slumming it in the arcade was his next best option. He was debating between basketball and skee-ball when he heard the victorious grunts of one Winnie Wu. He stepped towards her as she mashed buttons. He didn’t realize she was that good. When the high score graphic flashed across the screen and Winnie burst into a triumphant cheer…he couldn’t help but clap excitedly right alongside her. He was instantly shocked by her shock. He watched the leftover beer drip towards the floor. He looked back up to Winnie with gritted teeth. “I just saw you crushing it…wanted to witness history in action is all.” Parker said with a shrug. Last time he checked this was a public arcade. “I’ll buy you a new beer as a prize. Or a water…since you’re already jumpy as fuck.” He suggested, opting to take some nearby napkins and clean up Winnie’s mess.

Parker’s nonchalant kindness caught her off guard almost more than bumping into him unexpectedly had in the first place. She was so much more used to people being annoyed with her: annoyed to see her, annoyed that she was talking, annoyed that she was breathing the same air as them. Her own tone had evolved because of it, going from apologetic as a child to preemptively defensive as she had just been. Winnie watched, dumbfounded, as he started to clean up her mess. “I... sorry. I just didn’t see you th-there...” She offered him a small smile. She had been crushing it. The high score screen still flashed on the arcade cabinet. It felt good to see WIN there, right above ASS. “Th-thanks for wiping th-that up I was distracted. I forgot I even had a drink. I would take a prize drink. M-maybe I can get you a snack? Or we can split one? As a th-thanks for cleaning and not getting pissed at me...”

She had her (gross) beer, she had her eyes glued to the screen of the arcade cabinet, she was finally a Real Teen ™! She hadn’t even noticed how far she was leaning forward, how tightly she was gripping the joystick, how aggressively she was pressing the buttons. She didn’t even know how long she’d been there, she was just dead set on getting on the high score board. She knew she wasn’t good enough to get the top high score, she could at least be realistic about that. But she’d settle for landing somewhere in the middle, beating out whoever had put their name in as ASS.

“Yes!” She yelled when her wish was finally realized. “Take th-that, ASS!” In her excitement, she jumped back with her arms extended in triumphant punching motions, and knocked into not only her half finished beer (spilling it all over the floor), but the person behind her that she’d been previously completely unaware of. The presence of someone else startled her and she jumped again. “Hey! Where did you come from?!”

Man, she really should have thought this through a little better. Winnie wasn’t here because she cared about some stupid old movie, or because she wanted to get drunk and eat shitty food. No, Winnie had elected to show up to this thing for one reason: she loved bowling. It was the closest thing to a sport that she actually enjoyed. She’d conveniently forgotten that you kind of need more than just yourself to bowl. She hadn’t come with any friends, and she didn’t have that many in town to begin with, so she just began searching the crowds for a familiar face. Luckily, it wasn’t long before she spotted someone she’d been in classes with before. The Marine Biology department wasn’t huge, being a bit of a specific degree program, so she pretty much knew everyone else who was in those courses. “Hi, hello, uh,” she tried to get his attention. “It’s Cameron, right? We were in th-that Ecology course together?” She knew she was forgettable, but she was hoping he might remember the course.

There were certain places on the Southside Ozzy had sworn never to step foot in again… and that was most places. He didn’t come to the Southside to have fun anymore, not that he’d ever had that much fun over here to begin with. No, his trips were reserved strictly for volunteer purposes, and the occasional sweep by his old haunts to make sure his ex was still alive check up on things. He probably could have skipped this whole thing, no one would have second guessed it, but he wasn’t about to let the integration of the Southside scare him away from attending town events. After all, he had as much of a right to be here as everyone else, right?

That doesn’t take away any of his nervous energy, and he peeks over his shoulder before turning back to the person across from him, “Do you think it’ll be much longer before this thing ends?”

Winnie was wondering the same thing. Sure she could leave before it ended, but finding a way home that wasn’t her father coming to pick her up later that night was a little too much effort for her. “I hope not,” she responded, not entirely sure that the young man was talking to her (was there someone behind her that he knew better? probably!) but willing to voice her opinion regardless.

“I can’t even tell if th-the m-movie’s gonna end soon,” she gestured towards the screen playing silent moving images for those not in cars. “If you’ve got your own ride, you can probably head out whenever you want, th-though. I don’t th-think anyone would judge you, th-this is pretty boring.”

Said every creep ever, Rocky thought but had the good sense to keep her mouth shit this time. And good thing she did too as the other revealed she worked there. Rocky hadn’t spent a lot of time at Surf’s Up in the past but she couldn’t remember seeing her there before. Maybe she was sort of … light footed like that, for lack of a better word. “ Right, sorry. ” She apologised, and while it was genuine apologies always sounded a little uncomfortable in her mouth. She didn’t like to give them, she didn’t think many people deserved them. But sure, snapping at some random employee probably warranted it. “ Thanks, ” She said, stepping forward to grab lighter. Taking that small step back again as she replaced cigarette between her lips and successfully lit it this time. She blew smoke out to the side as the other fumbled out a pretty reasonable question. Trying not to be amused by the awkwardness, all things considered it’d kinda be a dick move. “ I heard Wilco’s niece is back in town, I was just waiting for her. ” She provided explanation with ease. Not that Rocky liked to think she was friends with Maddie Wilson– but Maddie didn’t seem to dislike her, so it felt like a safe bet. “ I’m not in the way– or in a restricted area or something, am I? ” She asked, casting a glance over her shoulder for any evidence of an employees only area.

Oh, waiting for Maddie. Well, shoot, that meant the other girl would be there for a minute. Not wanting to look like she was slacking off for no reason (especially not when she was with a friend of her boss’ niece), she pulled out her own cigarette case and lighter. Winnie had had to do this a few times before, when Wilco or one of the other employees had popped their head out to ask for her and she needed to justify why she was outside. At a certain point, she supposed she should just consider herself a smoker, whether she liked it or not, but she wasn’t sure if there was a numerical value to that. “No, no, you’re not in th-the way,” she clarified, lighting her own cigarette and taking a drag. “It’s fine to stand back here, I just don’t know why you’d choose it. It’s not illegal to stand just outside the front, y’know? M-Might be a better place to wait for your friend?”
