So, I’m waiting to get in to see a rheumatologist to find out if my exhaustion and unbearable joint pain (among other things) mean that I have lupus, and it got me thinking about how pretty much all of my friends who share the Autism spectrum with me also have auto-immune illnesses of some kind or another - arthritis, fibro, celiac, etc. And I know that there is some indication that Autism itself has inflammatory/auto-immune components (anecdotally, my meltdowns/shutdowns have dwindled to almost non-existent on a primarily anti-inflammatory diet). Trying to research that link, though, only leads me to the studies on how auto-immune illness in the mother is linked to higher prevalence of Autism in the kids (just as trying to research how dietary changes might help with the more debilitating parts of my Autism just leads to articles that use gross “cure” rhetoric). And while this familial stuff is kind of interesting - there is a family history of rheumatoid arthritis on my maternal side - what I want to know is if being Autistic means that we are at a higher risk for these illnesses, not whether a parent having these illnesses is what made me who I am. Does anyone have any studies on this/resources where they could point me?
