THE CONNECTION between robert’s family and her own was distant, granted, but aryanna had always considered him family anyway, and so even when people threw all kinds of accusations at him she had stood by him. aryanna would always remain loyal to her family, no matter what changed. “robert!” she called, the excitement to see his familiar face evident in her voice as she called to him from across the room. “i’m so glad to see you. it feels as though a lifetime has passed since i saw you last.”

vivienne nodded her head in agreement at that, fingers fiddling with her dress as she did. “yes, so do i. i wish it didn’t take so long to travel there.” near a month just to be able to go home and see her family, whereas she could see the friends she’d made in the crownlands in less than a days ride. “oh, you wouldn’t believe some of the things that happen here. a murder during an event…it doesn’t feel entirely surprising.” everywhere she looked here, there were people hiding secrets. hell, she was one of them given she’d only told a select few about her affair with luke. “don’t take the simplicity of the north for granted. you’ll miss it if you marry outside of our home region.”

"I DON’T intend to.” the northern woman answered, a melancholy smilr dancing on her lips. with the news that she was to marry a lord of the westerlands, a great deal of aryanna’s life had been thrown into chaos and with no foreseeable end to the lockdown, arya wasn’t even certain she’d be permitted to return home one last time before being married off. “i can;t imagine what it must be like living anywhere else. these past weeks have been so strange, it’s stranger still to think that it could soon be my life.”

Rhys was relieved that he had made the decision to bring his favourite horse to the capital with him. It meant that the journey had taken him longer since Oberon had needed more time to rest rather than Rhys just using a relay of horses to get to the capital, but it was worth it now he had his longstanding companion with him for company. With his closest friends distracted with their new baby, Rhys had been spending more time out in the stables and found himself chatting away to his horse like old times, unaware of the young woman watching him.

MORE than anything, aryanna simply wished to take her horse drogon and escape from the city and its occupants, even if it was just for a few hours. she needed some time to herself to straighten out her thoughts. but that had been forbidden, and so she’d settled with going to visit her horse in the stables. she was surprised to find they weren’t empty and she was even more surprised to hear the man talking to his horse. “is he a good listener?” she asked him with a grin.

Alasdair was only one bite into his bread before he pulled a face. The first bite had been like trying to clamp a brick between his teeth, and the interior was so dry and crumbly that it felt like his mouth was filled with stones. “Dear gods,” He grumbled when he’d finally swallowed the morsel with the aid of some wine. “Do you think I’m the next victim and this bread was intended to poison me? If I slip into unconsciousness, I think you should question the cook.”

ARYANNA looked over at him with a raised eyebrow. she was all too aware of the quality of the bread, she’d learned to avoid it long ago, one of her first nights in the keep when she’d been over eager to get some food in her stomach and had nearly broken a tooth. “i doubt it. if the bread was poison, half the castle would be dead by now.”

“I do know.” He know her, she was probably his closest confidant. She’d gone from bossing him around as a small girl yelling at Rickard though over a head taller than her to trying to remind him who he was. She comforted him so many times, it was his turn again to do the same. “Ary you were made for this.” Looking around them he didn’t mean just the south, but for seeing more than just what was in front of them. She was to be married to a Lannister, she’d have the gold to go and do as she pleased. That had been what he’d looked for the most, something that would allow her that. House Stark wasn’t wealthy as some, but with the Lannister fortune she would see whatever she liked. “If I have to sail around with you, you’ll see it.” As if he’d want to leave the north, he was made for the north where she for the world. But for her he’d do it. For Mikken and Lyanna he’d do it. “Even these new gods know how I need you at my side now.”

AS HE spoke, it hit her that it had been so long since they'd be able to just sit down and talk. she missed her brother. missed having time to spend with him without worrying about murders and marriages and whatever thousand other things must be running through his mind. and that, if this marriage with the lannister heir actually happened, those moments would become infinitely rarer. she emitted a quiet laugh, looking at him with a raised eyebrow. "that's a kind offer but we both know you'd be miserable stuck on a boat in the middle of the gods know where." more likely than not, the two of them would end up murdering each other if thrown together with nothing separating them. "don't worry, brother. i'll remain by your side for as long as i possibly can." the unspoken words being that she would be torn away from him, from her home all too soon.

It had been more years than he could remember since he’d seen any of the Stark siblings. The last time had been to visit his great grandmothers grave with his father. When she’d died his father at least knew that Sansa Stark deserved to be burried in the north. “I only wanted to leave to see him buried.” He wanted to see justice done, but he’d wanted to see the burial. That he wasn’t even allowed. 

SHE couldn't imagine what he was going through. aryanna had still been young when her father passed, not ready to lose him, but she'd at least had the knowledge that the end had been peaceful for him and the comfort of her family. those had been the things that had gotten her through. jasper had none of that. "i'm so sorry." she told him, her eyes alight with sadness and anger. "justice will be served." she promised, there was perhaps little that aryanna could do to see lord arryn avenged, but it was the northern way. she had been raised to believe that every action had consequences that would come about no matter what.

no matter the fact that this wasn’t the first time he’d been in this situation, he still felt somewhat nervous. this woman could very well end up being his wife if his father and her brother chose to go through with their alliance and all it entailed. they may one day share a home, a life, children — such things were of importance to him, and he’d be damned if he didn’t try to make things work. “aryanna it is.. you must call me jason in return, then.” there’s a light blush that settles on his cheeks then as he nods his head once. he can’thelp but notice how pretty she truly was, that his father calling her comely was truly an understatement when it came to how radiant she truy was. “i was wondering if you would do me the honour of accompanying me for a walk in the gardens. i figure that if we are to be married, we’d best get to know one another?” he ends it in a question, head tilting and a soft smile on his mouth even as familar nerves settle in. 

HE’S NOT what she was expecting, is all aryanna can think as jason lannister, the man she was told she was to marry spoke. she noted the slight colouring in his cheeks, the shyness as he spoke. he was certainly nothing like what she'd expected of a lannister. nothing like the demonic figure she'd imagined as a girl, that would rip her away from winterfell and everything she loved. briefly, she let herself imagine a life of happiness with the man before her, and then the thousand horror stories she'd heard from married women came flooding in. how their husbands had seemed so charming at first and then once it was too late they revealed their true colours. was she truly naive enough to think that she'd been lucky enough to find herself in a betrothal with a truly good man? she berated herself. "i had been planning to visit the gardens. i won’t say no to some company" she answered, dropping her gaze. uncertain, all of a sudden, of what to make of this man.

she couldn’t help but laugh in amusement at that, a small quiet thing, but amused nonetheless. “that is very nearly what i said when i first arrived here.” she had been almost naive when she had first married into house stokeworth. she thought that the capital would have been filled with excitement and the adventure that she had craved all her life. instead she’d found nothing but people full of judgement and a certain refinement that she had never been able to relate to. “as am i. if the north wasn’t so damn far away, then i would have come home to visited far more often.”

ARYANNA noted the laugh, it was small but it warmed aryanna’s heart nonetheless. when she’d first heard the news of the death, it had felt as though the whole world had come crashing down. small moments like these were enough to remind her that she had to keep fighting on, to do what was best for her family. “sometimes i wish we weren’t quite so isolated up in the north,” she began thoughtfully, “but then i think about everything that’s happened since i’ve been here and i’m rather grateful for the distance.”

it wasn’t the first time his father had arranged a betrothal for him. from the time that he had been just a boy, his father had put him in betrothal after betrthal, from ladies in the great houses, to other noble ladies. each time he’s merely nodded his head, told his father that he would do as he pleased. even after his father had broken off his betrothal to the arryn girl, he had only disagreed silently rather vocalizing his thoughts. he’d always thought it dishonourable to break a promise, especially on a whim the way his father did. but when he’d found out he was betrothed to aryanna stark, he’d been more than surprised. the stark and lannister history was more than a little rocky, a marriage between the houses unheard of for gods knew how many years. he could only wonder what his father was playing at, but he was still willing to give the starks a chance. they deserved as much. walking into the common room, he released a long breath at the sight of her before he approached. “lady stark.” he called out softly as he approached. “it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. ARYANNA had been surprised, to say the least, when rickard had told her that he’d spoken to lord lannister. that he had arranged a betrothal between her and his son. the heir apparent to casterly rock. everyone knew of the history between the starks and the lannisters, the long held rivalry between the two houses. arya had told rickard that she was open to a betrothal for the benefit of her family, she’d been expecting a betrothal, but this? this she was not expecting. she hadn’t met jason before, but she knew immediately from the golden hair and shining blue eyes who this was. her betrothed. she swallowed hard at his approach, for all her hesitation about a marriage between the two of them if rickard thought it was a good idea she was in no place to say no to him. she would not be responsible for bringing ruin to her family, so she forced her most pleasant, ladylike smile to her lips. “please call me aryanna.” she said warmly. “if we’re to get along, we shouldn’t be bothering with those silly formalities.”

ARYANNA hadn’t heard anything from her younger sister in quite a while and she knew that meant nothing good. she knew because she’d been too much like lyanna, not very long ago, bold and headstrong and reckless. she still was truly, if she was being at all honest with herself. but that similarity in the way their minds worked gave arya one advantage at least, an ability to track the youngest stark down with ease. “i thought i might find you here.” she said as her eyes landed on the small, dark-haired figure. “i hope you haven’t been hiding from me.” the motherliness in aryanna’s voice was uncharacteristic, but not surprising. she had always been fiercely protective of all hr siblings, but her baby sister who was so like her was the one she worried for most.

Reyla couldn’t stop the genuine smile that spread across her face. “Wonderful! All I need to do is let my servant Olyvar know. Do you prefer sweet or dry wine?” As the two of them walked, Reyla linked their arms together. “It’s been too long since I’ve socialized with a smart lady.”

"SWEET.”” she answered. “always sweet.” aryanna had never outgrown her childish sweet tooth, she still adored indulging in whatever treats she could get her hands on. “oh, i’m sure that’s not true.” aryanna responded, laughing. “we’re in a city full of smart ladies. surely you’ve spoken to one of them.” there was a hint of sarcasm as she spoke.

vivienne nodded her head, knowing that surely if it were any northerner she knew of, then aryanna most likely would have heard about it. “i’d have to agree. i’d rather get nothing than reiceive condolences.” she didn’t need it in her life, not when she had enough to deal with already. the ache of missing her children and the pain of losing luke seemed constantly at war within her, and she’d much rather die than having to add grief to it. “what do you make of things here in the capital?” she’d lived in the crownlands near half her life, but she can’t recall a drama quite like this in king’s landing in her time there. it left her on edge, unsure of everything she knew.

ARYANNA’S head tilted in consideration of vivienne’s question, teeth grazing her lips as she tried to put words to the storm of emotions inside her head. “it’s not what i was expecting.”she answered finally. aryanna had been expecting a city alive with wonder, she had thought the coronation would be a week long party and then she would return home to the familiar cold of the north. instead she’d arrived to a dead body and then a lockdown. “still, with everything happening i’m grateful for moments like these. it’s good to see old friends again.”

        “ I’LL HOLD YOU TO THAT promise. i don’t care for another visit like this. murder mysteries are far more interesting to read than experience. ”          he laughed to disguise the frusteration in his voice. if he was here alone perhaps he’d mind less but his family was in and therefore in danger as well. genuine amusement entered his laughter, however, in response to her teasing.          “ i can handle the cold. we hightowers are tougher than we may look. ”

“THAT’S one thing we can agree on.” aryanna answered dryly. her eyes slid across to him, sensing irritation buried deep in his tone. she recognized it because she felt exactly the same, frustration at being cooped up inside the castle, fear for her siblings, longing for home. she knew exactly how nikolai felt. “i’ll believe that when i see it.” she continued on, devillish smile still playing on her lips.

       “ alright maybe a little, ”  he chuckled, “ but not for the reasons i want to be.       i’d rather be enjoying my time with being placed under the crown’s own version of version of child-minding. ”    mikken rolled head head, stretching out his sore neck.   “ i mean, honestly.   we travelled over a month to get here, and i’d rather have stayed home.     and i miss the godswood. ” he knew he was whining a little, but he was homesick to an extent - as well as concerned for his siblings safety.    he remembered the story of eddard stark and the unlawful beheading at the behest of a lannister king.    “ but reunions are nice, and they do have some beautiful gardens.  and women, of course. ”

"I KNOW.”  aryanna responded with a sigh. she couldn’t help but feel a little bit of guilt, the more she thought about it, the more certain she was that mikken would have simply stayed at home had it not been for her insisting he accompanied them. the pack survives, remember, she had said to him when the summons had first arrived. a harsh laugh escaped her lips at his words, “if ogling a bunch of southerner women is what it takes for you to enjoy this, then i can’t complain.”
