I never knew Asians being lighter skinned was being considered an actual problem in various fandoms. It sounds like a type of exotic fetishism
I would say… “exotic fetishism” that appears in the context of “embrace your Asian beauty! Don’t whitewash yourself!” is rather a symptom of self-righteousness than just outright fetishization.
It’s not them taking “light skinned Asian” as a problem but rather… them cannot comprehend the possibility of Asian being light-skinned, you know?
For instance: someone draws Asian characters in lighter shades? “WHITEWASH!” The artist will be accused. Some Asian looking lighter than they expected? “It’s the Asians who try to be white, please embrace your natural self!” It’s like, they expect Asian people to be a certain shade and darker. And if we or the drawings don’t meet that expectation, that becomes a “problem for them to fix”. “To make it right”, “politically correct”.
In other words, they expect Asian people to be darker than a certain shade, and they try to “fix” what don’t fit into that criterion. Including naturally light skinned Asians, or the depictions of them. The good examples are re-coloring k-pop stars, which was a movement to “recolor” k-pop star images into darker skin tones, or when people only allow Asian characters to be drawn in tan or darker, but not in sandy ivory.
When they are doing that, they are enforcing their expectation on Asian people, especially light skinned ones. They erase the people even though the people are right in front of them. Patronize them, thinking the people just want to be white and won’t admit it. They generalized a whole group of ethnicities into this certain shade, and forcing their white-centered expectations on certain Asian people, denying their NATURAL STATE.
And I am sick of it. If some people want to argue that Asians can’t be light skinned, see Glenn in Walking Dead or Colleen in Iron Fist, and other characters around them. Asians can have a wide spectrum of skin tone, from darker to lighter.
(Sorry I am replying so late, I didn’t have time or energy to sit down and write a rant haha)
How are yooou? I haven't talked to you in a very long time! ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ
Heeeeeeey hi!! Sorry I’ve taken this long to reply, I see you sent this almost 2 weeks ago *sweats*
I am going through a very busy time right now, no mental or physical energy to spare on any, haha. That’s why I’ve been ignoring my social media.
How have you been? I hope good (and not mad at me, bc I am really bad at replying *wipes sweats*)
LIGHT 👏SKINNED 👏ASIANS👏ARE👏PRETTY👏TOO👏 I AGREE WITH YOU 100% THANK YOU FOR ADDRESSING THIS PROBLEM OH MY GOD IM TIRED OF PEOPLE SAYING MY SKIN TONE CANT BE NATURAL. I DONT EVEN WEAR MAKEUP WHY TF THEY SAYING MY FACE IS PALER THAN MY BODYz I AM C H I N E S E AND PALE, OKAY. AND I CAN NEVER COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS GOD THANK YOU FOR ADDRESSING THIS
Oops, sorry! I haven’t checked my tumblr for a long while, and I imagine your message is a response to a reblog I made a couple months ago… I have no idea when you sent this. I’m so sorry that I am getting back to you so late. Hopefully you can see this.
It seems some people not from East Asia just can’t get their head around the fact that Asian can be light skinned too. They have these “ideas” of what we should be, what we should look like, etc. And they get this patronizing and actually quite condescending attitude of “you should be proud of yourself, don’t change yourself” when we don’t meet those ideas.
For example; “Asian should have darker skin tones(or maybe they are just too PC to say yellow)”. The epitome of this was “Re-coloring K-pop Stars” bullshit. I felt insulted when I saw those “re-colored” photos. They took every lightly toned pics of k-pop stars into 2 or 3 shades darker colored ones.
That was THEIR idea of how an East Asian should look. Not pale-sandy ivory, but only a tan or darker was allowed. And they “made it so”. (I bet they’ve never been to East Asia.)
Just like black ppl or white ppl have a variety of skin tones within a quite wide range respectively, we Asian people also have a fucking variety in skin tones, surprise! There are darker AND paler shades within that variety. And those people go around pointing fingers at paler skinned Asians, “EMBRACE YOUR NATRUAL BEAUTY!”, completely ignoring the fact that, oops, that IS my NATURAL Asian shade. You are just too ignorant to see it. What you are actually saying by those phrases and “re-coloring” so and so movements, you are actually saying something like “oh you wanna be white, even your beauty standards are whitewashed”. Lets think here, who’s assuming who wants to be white, therefore assuming Asian people have an inferiority complex towards certain ethnicities? At the same time ignoring the fact that that is actually what Asian people actually might look like, in favor of THEIR “ideal image of Asian”?
The things people have said to you is also in that context and ridiculous. As if you are faking your natural skin tone and lying to pass as light skinned, instead of taking your word for it. The hubris and implied disdain in those behaviors, thinking a person of certain ethnicity naturally wants to mimic an image of another ethnicity, just because “they don’t look Asian enough” in their standard, and because the concentration of pigments in your skin isn’t perfectly even and consistent throughout your whole body. Wow, our skin must look like those of cel shaded anime characters. The ignorance and hubris is too much that it’s almost laughable.
I’m sorry you’ve had to deal with those kinda shit. I am also on the paler side, but thankfully(ha) I live in where my own ethnicity is majority, so I don’t get bothered much in that regard except on the internet. Like I don’t even care whether lighter or darker skin looks ~prettier~ and ~natural~ on me(or more like on my supposed ethnicity). I just want people not to be self-righteous and tell Asian people how they should look. It’s almost like they only can see the person in a certain shade of color once they recognize their ethnicity. Ugh.
(On the side note, if I wanted to criticize k-pop stars’ “whiteness”, then I would go for the uniformity of Korean beauty standard, which certainly favors lighter skin tone(which has been a thing even BEFORE the modern age where Asian culture became aware of Western people and their culture bc pale skin meant not having to work outside). I would criticize the unfair standardization of beauty standards which make those who don’t fit it insecure. And I agree. But not fucking THAT movement)
(This post is all over the place but I am tired so uuuuugh soz??)
