Modern(ish) Musicals
I’ll list three musicals per “genre” with a short summary of each and three songs per musical to give you a sense of the show.
Spectacular Musicals: These are musicals with huge, show-stopping numbers with the same feel as all your classic faves. You’ve probably at least heard of all of these.

Anastasia
Two charming Russian conmen try to pass off an orphan girl as the lost princess Anastasia
Songs

Songs

Subtly Beautiful Musicals: These are musicals without much flashy production value that just let their songs and stories simmer beautifully. For all of these, you really need to hear the whole show, but I’ll list three songs as a good starter.
The Last Five Years
The story of a doomed relationship told from two perspectives simultaneously, backward and forwards
Songs

Two high schoolers go on a murder-spree
Songs
Fight for Me
Our Love Is God
Seventeen
Catch Me if You Can
A young man leads an FBI agent on a wild goose chase, assuming many fake identities
Songs
Live in Living Color
Don’t Break the Rules

Super Popular Musicals: These are the musicals everyone always talks about. You probably know about them, but maybe you were never quite able to get into them, so here are songs do introduce yourself to them.
Hamilton
The (fictionalized) story of the life of Alexander Hamilton
Songs
Aaron Burr, Sir
Satisfied
The Room Where it Happens
Dear Evan Hansen
A teenager with anxiety finds himself in an unexpected situation when a classmate commits suicide
Songs
Waving Through a Window
Requiem
Only Us
Les Mis
The musical follows both a group of French revolutionaries and Jean Valjean, a supremely moral convict
Songs
Red and Black
One Day More
On My Own
Dark Musicals: These are musicals that do not hit all the peppy beats typically associated with musical theater–have tissues handy.

what I love about you based on your favorite musical
Let me tell you some beautiful things about you.
Bare: A Pop Opera: your inner sense of justice is entirely separate from whatever the prevailing crowd mentality may be.
Be More Chill: you allow people to make mistakes as they become who they’re meant to be.
Come from Away: you recognize that though the details of our lives are different, our stories are the same.
Dear Evan Hansen: you see yourself in the eyes of strangers. You are highly conscientious and you reach out when someone is down.
Falsettos: you can clearly see both the good and the bad in people, and you’re able to hold both.
Fun Home: you look for the ways that others are like yourself, rather than only focusing on all the ways that they are different.
Hamilton: you are humorous in a way that makes people think. You own your complexity and contradictions.
Heathers: you aren’t afraid to march to the beat of your own drum. Bonus: you’re very stylish/aesthetic.
Les Misérables: you know how to make people feel important. You are idealistic, compassionate, and generous with your emotions.
Little Shop of Horrors: you follow your joy wherever it may take you.
Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812: you are unconventional, but in a way that invites people in, rather than strangeness for the sake of strangeness.
Newsies: you are always seeking something bigger than yourself, but you don’t let the smaller things slide, either. You never forget that ultimately, they are what you are fighting for.
Next to Normal: you know when it is time to let people go. You posses deep emotional strength, understanding that loving someone does not mean “rescuing” or “saving” them.
Phantom of the Opera: you are intuitive and able to see into people’s loneliness and longing. You find poetry in a person’s darkest parts.
Ragtime: you are both a visionary and a realist, compromising neither for the sake of the other.
Rent: you are intellectual, but without ever being elitist or exclusive.
Spring Awakening: you carry sensitivity and spirituality just below the surface. You ask the difficult questions.
Something Rotten!: you understand that you don’t need everyone to love you–only the people who matter.
Sunday in the Park with George: you find beauty in all the messy ties that bind us.
The Book of Mormon: you are willing to look beyond first impressions. You find the child in people.
The Last Five Years: you understand that love–whether familial, platonic, or romantic–is a choice. When you commit to someone, you do so with your mind and your heart.
Tuck Everlasting: you can be both wonderfully childlike and astoundingly wise.
Waitress: you are unfailingly kind even on your hardest days.
Wicked: when the entire world is wrong, you are willing to be the villain.
and if you dance like hell, you hope you’ll never touch the ground
theatre characters i adore: peter simmonds, bare: a pop opera
alternative title: peter’s dancing is the cutest thing i’ve ever seen
[Bare LA 2013, Wonderland
Jason: I have some clothes that you can wear
Matt: And what is that supposed to mean?
Peter makes a move to make Matt back down. Peter looks at Jason exasperatedly. Jason raises his hands in an “im innocent” gesture. ]
idk why but im forever gonna be amused by this exchange, okay
Peters already claimed half of Jason’s wardrobe for himself and he sure as hell ain’t about to start sharing
absolution is hurting me today
two player game (reprise 1)
i’ve seen some posts on instagram saying that it would’ve been great if i’m mitb there was a sad ‘two player game’ reprise so here’s my shot at writing one
“You told me I was… your favourite person
You said… we’d always be a team.
This party’s hell,
And I guess it’s just as well
I’ll have to make do…
I’ll keep it a one-player game.”
Joe Iconis and George Salazar prank called me from my girlfriend’s phone
Ok so
she went to their show at 54 and below and can I just say
these men are dorks
I get a call from her and I just hear in a really squeaky voice “hey do you like Joe Iconis and George Salazar” so I'm like “,,,, sure?” cos I assumed, her being the social butterfly that she is, that she made a geeky friend who wanted to say hi to me (this happens often) and then its just George going “ITS ACTUALLY US!” and I fucking short-circuited like “,,, hello? hi! hello!”
they laughed and joe just goes “I didn’t know what to say! I've never prank called someone before!” and after that yah know they just said, “thanks for liking us” (because they’re adorable idiots, why wouldn’t I like them) and they had to go but I stg I’m still reeling, what even???
If she sees this post, hi hun, you’ve ruined my brain, I am fried.
local drama nerd and techie bc if everyone else in bmc is gonna be in the show someone has to actually run it
actually it’s bc i’m in stage crew and i want representation but shhhh
“the end” doesn’t necessarily mean “happily ever after”
