also, cafeterias and restaurants and even housekeepers themselves sprawl out chairs and tables. everywhere. right there on the stairs where people should be walking. (nobody pays them much mind tho. makes it super easy to grab a cup of Wakening Drink™ on the way to work.)
when it comes to architecture, islanders tend to be a little more... minimalistic. aside from (quite obviously) wanting to oppose the mountain folk's Overly Complicated Architecture™ this way, they also feel that, when it comes to cities, its essential to look at the bigger picture rather than spend hours polishing all the little details. sure, the richer areas will look more quirky and interesting, but the general goal is to make something that works while simultaneously being pretty.
it's also worth noting that taking good care of the outer appearance of one's house is somewhat of a tradition. their ancestors used to do it, modern islanders do it too. this is why, while every house is relatively simple, they all have some kind of detail that distinguishes it from the rest (ex: an interesting flower by the doorway, a painting on the walls, flowers on the roof etc), thus making walking through the city fairly interesting.
