one comforting thing is, now daniel gets to eat as much as he wants, he can go to bills games, he can be at home with his family as long as he wants, he can party all he wants, he can ride dirtbikes all the time, he can do all the things he's wanted to do that this sport has prevented him from doing for almost half his life. it hurts now, but time will heal. this chapter may be over but the fun part only just begins.

Yeah not buying that bullshit Daniel knew before Singapore. If he did, his family would have been there 120%. If he knew, all of his loved ones like his parents, Heidi, his sister and niece and nephew would have all been there. But bc RB decided to absolutely blindside him, he wasn’t given the chance to celebrate his last race with those who mean the most to them. Which will not only have been gutting for him, but absolutely heartbreaking for them as well. Broken for all involved rlly. This was rlly rlly rlly not the way Daniel Ricciardo was supposed to go.

The “Daniel’s been underperforming” rumours need to die. It’s a convenient narrative and one that hasn’t been at all questioned by the F1 media or podcasts or Red Bull/vcarb themselves, so I’m not judging people who say it, but it’s just not true. He has chassis issues at the start of the season when the car was capable of points; Yuki didn’t. After the chassis was replaced the car development went backwards where other teams’ didn’t, and it’s realistically not a car that is capable of scoring points every week. He’s been incredibly hampered by some creative strategies from VCARB in both qualifying and the races. He’s been driving a car with an old engine since at least Silverstone. His tyre management is second to none and he and Yuki have been incredibly closely matched on race pace. The VCARB01 has had start issues all season., and doesn’t necessarily align with his driving style either; when he drove the RB19 at the Silverstone tyre test last year he was setting times that would put him on the front row in Qualifying next to Max. The TV coverage has barely shown any of his onboards or overtakes.

Yes, F1 is a sport and it’s tough, but his performance has been in no way deserving of a mid-season swap, even without all of the other Red Bull fuckery. I had hoped the fastest lap record would make people question the media narrative around performance but clearly not enough.

Daniel’s shadow has always loomed over that red bull seat. Do they really think the ghost of his name won’t continue to haunt it especially when he was so close to getting it back?

Then f*ck off!" on live television. For the victory at Monza in 2021. For the shoeys you did and made others do, for riding into the paddock on a horse equipped with it's own pass, for disintegrating a camper van together with Verstappen, for hitting Verstappen in Baku, for all the nonsensical braking you did, for almost knocking Norris out with a space hopper, for the kindness that I saw you show even and above all when the cameras were off, for the interviews you did without shoes because damn you had used them to drink from, for the gestures you made while you spoke because Italian genes - even if very distant - always find a way to come out. Choose for yourself what you will remember Daniel Ricciardo's Formula 1 career for. It seems to me that this big Australian fella, after all, has given us more than one reason to do so.

If it's true, even if it's not true at this point, how Red Bull treated Daniel is FAR worse than what McLaren did to him. This isn't a simple case of "if you don't perform, you're out," this is manipulation and hostility and cruelty. If it was a "normal" job, there would be a lawsuit over the treatment. It's not about losing the seat, it's about the horrific way it's been handled.

And none of it makes sense. It probably never will. We're never going to know why they've put him through this hell for absolutely zero gain.

Even if you're not a fan of Daniel, what has been done to him is not normal. It's not like Logan or Nyck or whoever else you want to bring up. Those were guys who in the grand scheme of things haven't left a huge mark on Formula 1, objectively speaking, and their situations were completely different. Daniel has been an ambassador for the sport far above and beyond most others and is, without hyperbole, at the root of its explosion in popularity. Daniel Ricciardo is important to Formula 1 in ways that transcend the racing itself, and for this to happen to him is inexcusable.

Nobody should be put through a situation like this the way Daniel's been. It's not normal. It can't become normal.

And as I've said, before you decide to pile on the cruelty to him or his fans, remember that this can be your driver one day. If we normalize this type of treatment, there's a good chance it will be.

What really bothers me is that they didn't have the decency to let Daniel have COTA. Like it was right there. They could have announced it now and let him have his last race at a circuit he loves and then given him the proper farewell party he deserved. It would still have been painful, but not like this.

I’ve met Daniel one morning in a kitchen of our colleague’s house in London, which we shared following a team’s Christmas party and I didn’t have a clue who he was. “This is our Toro Rosso test driver Vlad” she told me. Little I knew our paths would be crossing again and again over the next dozen of years. You know, drivers are funny human beings, they rarely give access to you and only when they leave the sport they kinda open up a little bit and let their guard down. Daniel was never like that, always time for a chat or a joke or to ask quickly how the family is and he never really changed throughout the years .

I’m sure you’ll be around mate but for now I just wanna say thank you for everything, thank you for the shoeys, the middle fingers in my lens and even for the farts inside the cockpit, it’s been quite a journey and the best part of your life actually starts now, so enjoy it .

ultimately what I want to remember is the impact Daniel had on F1. I don't want to count the wins (though 8 is already a lot), I want to count the fans. how many people got into the sport because of him? how many people were fans of Daniel first, fans of F1 second? how many people started with him as their favourite, how many people still have him as their favourite? how many people have his "enjoy the butterflies" quote as a lockscreen, as a tattoo? the impact he's had on the sport, in the last five years especially, cannot be brushed off or ignored. and no matter how much time passes, people who wish to get into F1 by binge-watching DTS will always start with his face. in that way, he has made a lasting mark onto the sport that will never be erased
