Just caught up on ACS Versace, and….. DANG, man!

The whole thing was brilliantly (and gorgeously) shot, the acting was top notch… just everything about it was chilling and sad and unsettling, and SO effective.

And Darren freaking Criss, man… I’ve been following the reviews so I knew his performance was bound to be impressive, but I think what really did take me aback the most was… he didn’t just go for the traditional “dead behind the eyes psychopath killer” angle. Don’t get me wrong, there is ZERO doubt Cunanan is a psychopath, but Darren plays him with a distinct level of charm along with the crazy. You’re completely unsettled by him even in the flashbacks, especially the more and more you realize you can’t trust anything he says and as a viewer you’re even unsure as to what really happened and what might be just in his imagination… and yet even though we as the viewers (and his friends) know full well he’s a pathological liar, you’re still kind of drawn in by him. You’re kind of lulled into this sense of him being desperate for attention but seemingly harmless enough. And then it snaps back to 1997 and it’s just so freaking CREEPY that someone who had seemed, if not normal then at least harmless, is so completely unhinged and practically joyful about the evil he’s just committed! It seems like such a tricky role to navigate as an actor, and Darren really is just incredible with it!

But just to give everyone else credit, the whole cast is fantastic! I’m thoroughly creeped out, but I’m still very eager to see more. I just hope I can handle all the violence… I don’t do well with graphic violence so this show is probably pushing my limit haha. But based on this episode it definitely seems worth it for the storytelling and the acting!
