the beginning.
what is this?Â
this will be a sequel. the original book, happenstance, was an exploration of a time and period when situations and experiences happened, but other situations and experiences were missed. using words and matching them with photographs using instax 210 film.
wish you were here will be a total and full text and visual collaboration and will be kept anonymous. the idea is simple: i want your words. share with me a phrase or an idea or just a simple thought, iâll collect all of these phrases separately and randomly assign each a number between 1 and 27. the number will signify the photo on the roll of film that will be paired with your phrase. the end game is to produce a printed book that is similar to happenstance, the phrase on one page of a spread and the corresponding photo opposite. the twist in this project is that all photos for this phase will be taken in cuba on single use cameras. at this time, i only plan to use 3 cameras (all disposable for consistency) that will make it to publish. i will have your phrases and corresponding numbers with me at all times, shooting appropriately, shooting based on the words you provide. it is important that the number associated with each phrase is randomized because i do not want the order to be contrived or curated, i want it to keep that string of happenstance within the storyline.Â
the photos i take will represent the emotion that your words evoke. some of the phrases you provide will be easier to shoot, some will be more transparent than others, some wonât make sense to you and might require elaboration on my end, and sometimes iâll elaborate and sometimes i wonât. thatâs the beauty of this project: itâs totally messy, open ended.Â
because i always wish you were here, and i want to share it with you when you arenât.Â
the final date for submission will be january 18th.
