Video Game Challenge : [6/7] female characters → Ciri (The Witcher)
“She is not a child,” the voice repeated. “She is the Flame, the White Flame which will set light to the world. She is the Elder Blood, Hen Ichaer. The blood of elves. The seed which will not sprout but burst into flame. The blood which will be defiled … When Tedd Deireadh arrives, the Time of End. Va'esse deireadh aep eigean!”

Enough of this ploughing chatter. Someone needs to die, and I will sleep better for it.
Witcher games let you do amazing stuff, like dunking babies.
That’s why I picked Cerys for the throne xD
I’ve only heard secondhand discourse about Yennefer, but the impression I’ve gotten is that a lot of her detractors don’t fully realize the magnitude of the decisions and sacrifices she makes in the name of finding Ciri. These include:
Serving Emhyr var Emreis, the Emperor of Nilfgaard, whose actions both directly and indirectly made her life a living hell for literal years. His army devastated the North, including her hometown, and she found herself in the middle of the struggle between him and Vilgefortz over who would ultimately lay claim to Ciri. When they finally met, his first instinct was to marry his daughter, never telling her they were related, and leave behind a dagger for Geralt and Yennefer to kill themselves with. He ended up rethinking that decision, but the fact that he even considered it is horrifying to say the least. That she would serve a man who has done the things he has speaks volumes about how desperate she is to find Ciri, no matter the cost.
Performing necromancy, an act which she compares to having a mouth full of wriggling cockroaches. There’s a double standard going on here wherein Geralt is seemingly justified in the path of destruction and dead bodies he leaves behind him while turning over every stone, but this somehow makes her the actual devil. She takes no pleasure in it, and she availed herself of all the other options a long time ago. It is the only way, and it reaffirms that she’s willing to do anything to find Ciri. Remember, in the world of The Witcher, people are never entirely good or entirely evil. Geralt has the option of doing things that are just as reprehensible or worse than this, depending on the player’s decisions.
Reuniting the members of the Lodge of Sorceresses, who have all betrayed her in some way in the past. For all the barbs she throws at Geralt about his past with Triss, she remains downright civil and even friendly with Triss herself. One of the women they rescue is Fringilla Vigo, who blinded her at Sodden Hill and slept with Geralt for months while Yennefer was held captive at Stygga Castle (though a letter in her study when you first meet her implies that they’re already on speaking terms). For someone who can be extremely vindictive and vengeful, she’s able to let bygones be bygones for the sake of saving the woman she thinks of as her daughter.
All of this paints a picture of someone who is dedicated and driven to extremes, who means well but doesn’t always consider what her actions will mean for those around her. That is a flaw that’s hard-wired into her character, and it makes her interesting. Moreover, it’s not the only side of her that we see. She goes through a full range of emotions in the game, and is written like an actual human being instead of whatever strawman caricature her critics like to reduce her to.
Yennefer is one of my favorite characters of all time, and stuff like this is a big reason why.
