Spell Craft Week One; Swift Focus Jar
With the school season soon approaching, you may find yourself overwhelmed with work and unable to focus. To combat this I present to you the Swift Focus Jar, designed for you to quickly burn your way through a piece of work that needs doing.
For this spell, write on a piece of paper that you are going to focus, or what you are going to get done. Place it inside the jar. After this point, you have a choice of what ingredients you can add. I just used a lavender tealight, some dried jasmine flowers and bay leaves but you and use whatever you have from this list that suits your purpose best.
Jasmine (For the creation of new ideas and promoting mental creativity)
Basil (relief from mental fatigue, focus)
Lavender (for creating a calmed mental state)
Bay Leaf (victory, success, strong wishes)
Ginger (Success)
Cinnamon (concentration)
Peppermint (Alertness, energy)
Add whatever herbs you decide upon into the jar. (You don’t even have to use any, but it helps a bunch) Carefully light a tealight candle and drop it into the jar, then screw the lid closed. This is going to cause the candle to become extinguished within about 10 seconds due to it’s lack of air. Stare at the candle intently until it burns out, visualising the candle burning through all the remaining air in the jar. Think now of yourself as the candle and the air the work you need to get done fast. Imagine how you will burn through the work until none is left just as quickly as the candle burned away all the air. Finally, get the candle out of the jar again and relight it, then put it back in. This time leave the lid off so it can breathe. Sit it on your desk while you prepare for school. The flame will then become your helpful companion, serving as a gentle but firm reminder everytime you see it.
Fire is the element of productivity and fast action. Or for lack of a better term, the ‘get your shit done’ element. So make sure you ask the element to help strengthen your resolve and thank it for the guidance it will give you!
Spell Craft by VioletWitchcraft is another new weekly series. Every week I will ask my followers what spell they feel they need in their lives, and then I will create one. For more custom spells made with you in mind come back every Sunday for the next instalment. If you leave a request on what spell I should do before Saturday night you may be picked! For more spells check out the Isobel’s Spellbook section of my blog.
Winter Witchery; A Brief Healing Companion
Many of us feel our natural magic rising as Summer bleeds into Autumn and Winter. But while our power grows, so does the cold. In light of this, here is a list of winter sicknesses you can use your magic to fight against! I have used the majority of recipes on this list and they have all worked well for me, especially using the rosemary tincture! (Sidenote; These tips should not be used to replace proper medical care. Make sure you aren’t allergic to any of the ingredients before consuming and consult with a doctor on what you can take if pregnant, taking other medication or elderly.)
Salt Water; Add a few spoonfuls of salt to a cup of water and gargle it at the back of your throat twice a day to treat a sore throat. (make sure you don’t swallow it!)
Elderflower Nasal Wash; Get a cup of boiling water and add a teaspoon of salt along with 2 sprigs of elderflower. Sniff through each nostril in turn twice a day to treat a blocked nose.
Homemade Cough Syrup; Slice an onion and place in a bowl, along with peppermint or lavender if you have it. Cover with honey and leave overnight. Separate the liquid from the ingredients and take 3 tablespoons a day to treat common cold symptoms .
Apple Cider Vinegar Compress; Add half a cup of cider vinegar to a bowl and top off with boiling water. Leave to infuse for 10 minutes. Soak a cloth in the mixture and lie down for 15 minutes with the cloth on your throat to treat a sore throat.
Rosemary Tincture; fill a bottle or jar halfway with dried rosemary then fill to the brim with vodka. Leave to settle for two to three weeks. Used externally to treat muscle ache, headaches, hair loss and sciatica. Can be used internally for common cold symptoms and countless other things, research it. Pretty much the white candle of herbal tinctures.
Nettle Tea; Make sure you wear thick gloves while handling nettles. Collect a handful of young nettle tops. Place in a cup, pour boiling water in. Place a plate on top and leave to infuse for 15 minutes. Strain and drink while warm. For common cold, menstruation pain, inflammation and nausea. A nettle soup recipe can also be found here http://allrecipes.com/recipe/165071/stinging-nettle-soup/
Garlic Syrup; Peel and crush cloves of garlic. The ratio for this is 8 cloves of garlic to 10 tablespoons of honey, so make as much as you need. Add both into a jar and leave to stand for a week. Take 4 tablespoons twice a day for a lung infection.
Mustard Foot Bath grind 1 inch piece of ginger to a paste, add a cup of hot water to it and set it aside. Grind 2 tablespoons of mustard to a fine powder. Heat enough water to dunk your feet into in a pan and when it gets warm turn it off, do not let it boil or get too hot. Add the mustard and ginger to the pan. Mix it well then strain off any excess materials and pour the foot bath into a tub or bucket that you can soak your feet in. Works for aches and pains and nasal congestion.
The Magical Home
Integrating your craft into your living space can be a daunting task. Unless you’re just a stellar housekeeper your home is likely at least a little messy all of the time. Unopened mail might still be sitting on the counter, that pile of laundry that you just didn’t get to this week is still on the floor or maybe you’ve just got a little extra clutter from too many missed spring cleanings. Despite how much these things can make your space feel distinctly un-magical, making your home into a sacred place for yourself can be quite simple.
Turning your home into a witchy haven isn’t for everyone, there are a lot of reasons to give it a go and everyone is going to have different motivations (or no motivation, which is ok too). Your home is where you base yourself. You sleep, eat and come together with loved ones there. Using witchcraft to ensure that space is always positive and energetic can improve the quality of the time you spend there, help you unwind more easily and give you a place of stillness in the midst of the chaos of life. Personally, I turned my home into a magic space to bring more focus on my craft, I take more time writing in my spiritual journal, traveling the realms and just generally maintaining my craft when my home looks and feels like a witchy home.
Start off just working on one room. It can be your kitchen, bedroom, living room, any room that you spend a decent amount of time in. It isn’t necessary to do a huge cleaning and wear yourself out, doing a little bit here and there can make a substantial improvement over time and you’ll be a lot more likely to continue maintaining your home instead of getting worn out and giving up.
Now, I’m certainly not your expert on cleaning, for those of you who really need help with this step I suggest checking out Unfuck Your Habitat. Personally, I like to do a deep cleaning using as few chemical cleaners as I can manage, I make all of my own cleaning agents with the purpose of magical as well as physical cleansing.
Cleaning Recipes
All Purpose Disinfectant Spray/Wash:
I use this for almost everything. I mix up 10 parts warm water with one part white vinegar and a few drops of essential oil OR I let the vinegar water sit with fresh or dried herbs in it for about a week before using it to clean. The herbs you use here can change depending on what your space needs. For example I use lavender for protection, purification and peacefulness. Basil draws wealth and soothes tempers between lovers. Orange is good for luck and wealth (though NOT good for cats so if you have kitties stay away from orange oil!). And mint is good for healing. This is great for wiping down counters, cleaning windows and mopping.
Shower Cleaner:
Cleaning showers is one of my least favorite tasks and trying to do it with safe cleaning products can be a nightmare but I’ve got a solution that does the trick. This isn’t so much a magical cleaning product (though I’m sure you could turn it into one) but it’s certainly a handy one to have around. Mix one part warm white vinegar with one part liquid dish soap in a spray bottle. It does require a bit of scrubbing if your shower is bad but compared to every other DIY shower cleaner I’ve tried it’s a miracle.
Floors
Sweeping has long been used by witches as a method of cleansing our homes magically and while a lot of sources will tell you to reserve a broom for the task and to sweep just above the floor to properly cleanse the area I just do it all at once. Who has time to sweep twice? I can do the same magical task with a little intent and focus while I’m also cleaning up pesky crumbs and cat hair.
Vacuuming is perhaps a less common way to tidy up the energy of a room but I find it works just as well as sweeping does! I make sure that when I empty a vacuum bag or dustpan I do it in the can outside to make sure I’m not just shuffling energy around in my house.
Mopping is another excellent mundane cleaning task for witches, especially when it comes to entryways and exits to the house. In addition to picking grime up off of your floor your mop water can be charged and used to lay down spells. I like using herbs for my mop water usually but once a year in the spring I mop with sun charged water to bring the vibrant spring/summer energy into my house and once a year in the fall I mop with moon charged water to welcome the introspective fall/winter energy in.
Doors and Windows
Doors and windows are important, they both protect our homes from the unwanted and welcome us in every day. When I make a magical wash for my doors and windows I like to use cinnamon, for protection, healing and enhancing my craft or, if I feel like I need a serious boost on my home protection or I need to break a curse I use chili pepper, which has the added bonus of strengthening love ties. In addition both of these are bug repellant.
One suggestion I would make is when you are cleaning your house you should try to have windows open. This allows fresh air to circulate into your home and it allows an outlet for all of the stagnant energy that you’ll be stirring up. Doors can be left ajar as well if you aren’t worried about pets taking themselves outdoors. Obviously this isn’t something you can do all the time, very hot or very cold weather would put a lot of strain on you heating/AC bill and it’s always best not to let the rain in.
Immediately post cleaning is a good time to place sigils on doors and windows as well. I like to use my Binding Chalk to make a line just in front of doors and windows, it acts very similar to having a line of salt in the same place.
Bedrooms
Bedrooms can be an excellent place to do magic. If you share a bedroom with a lover spells to enhance your relationship are favored. Tucking away herbal pillows or lighting candles can draw honesty and good communication for you and your partner or you could try something a little spicier and use spells intended to ignite a little passion.
If your bedroom is a solitary place it can be an excellent place to do dreaming magic, to meditate and to do spells for gentle self improvement.
In a child’s bedroom protective magic or sweet dream spells would be a good idea. A lot of small children have a fear of monsters and when I was little my parents would use “monster spray” every night to help me sleep. I know now that it was just water but infuse the water with lavender and it could easily double as a sleep aiding and protective spell.
A Few More Magical Home Ideas
Enchant the mirrors in your house to give everyone who looks into them a boost in their self esteem/body image.
Place a candle on the stove to symbolize the hearth fire tradition
Make a magic welcome mat that draws in good company and keeps away the bad
Pay close attention to the sort of energy your decor creates and adjust it to help create the energy you want in your home.
Is the TV the center of your home? Electronics can drastically change the feel of a space, try moving it to a less central spot and focus your rooms on something else
Playing music and changing the scent in a room can suffice for a quick energetic shift. Try setting a small pot of water with cranberries, orange peel, cinnamon or mint on the stove to simmer.
Get rid of stuff! I say this for people like myself who have trouble letting go of anything. Your stuff hangs onto energy. Gifts from people you don’t like? Stop being polite and letting their energy invade your house. Chuck it. Anything that reminds you of past relationships can go. In fact, cleaning house post breakup is super important! Get rid of any lingering reminders, wash their smell out of everything and clean your mattress thoroughly.
If it’s broken do away with it. I know, I know, you’re planning to get around to fixing it eventually. How often do you actually do that though? If you aren’t willing to sit down right now to fix it you probably won’t ever get to it. Throw it away or give it to someone who will have a use for it.
If you haven’t used it in the last year, chances are you won’t use it in the next year either. Get rid of it.
Make a habit of de-cluttering in small ways every day. Don’t let the mail pile up, clean up dishes left in odd rooms, pick up laundry, and just generally put things back where they belong. This goes a long way toward keeping the energy flow moving through your home smoothly.
Put bells on your doors. Bells help to clear energy, every time you open a door that room gets a little cleansing boost.
Cleaning your house can be turned into more than just house magic. You can visualize yourself sweeping away worries or scrubbing old habits that aren’t serving you away as well.
Bake bread. This really falls more under the heading of kitchen witchcraft but the smell of baking bread (or cookies!) wafting through your home can alter the energy in lovely ways and it’s also great for bringing prosperity to the house.
Hopefully this gives you guys some ideas and motivation to start making your home a little more magical :) Remember not to overdo it, making a home is a constant, gradual process, not a marathon. My ask box is always open if anyone has questions!

1/2 I never felt well in the house where my mom lives, I was suicidal when I lived there, it changed when I moved. There's this energy in her bedroom that freaks me out, I just won't go in. If she calls me in or wants to show me something, I hover in
2/2 the doorway and try to keep out. But when I do walk in, I just feel so wrong and I get nausea and even cold sweat. It’s a residing feeling in the whole house, but it’s most prominent in her room, and now she’s depressed. What could this be?
I’ll be honest, I’m not sure what this could be. It sounds almost like a spirit or energy may be causing it, but at the same time I haven’t dealt with a problem with this the few times I have interacted with spirits.
I would definitely try cleansing in some way. If you’re not able to use smoke cleansing with herbs, sigil charged candles (normally vanilla or a light scent have worked best for me) are also an idea. Putting up some wards or protection spells after cleansing wouldn’t hurt in the slightest either. We have a lot of information in our protection, cleansing, and warding tags for you to look at, and you’re always more than welcome to ask questions here as well. There may also be something in the spirit work tag, but I believe most of those posts are aimed towards working with the spirits rather than getting rid of them.
And as usual, if our followers have any ideas or something that would help, please don’t be shy!
~Shock
I’m actually pretty proud of this…
Please attempt at some point in your life to recreate this bath I just had; it was otherworldly:
hot water
at least half a cup of salt - I used kosher
two bay leaves (or more, don’t let me dull your sparkle)
the peel from one orange
brewed black tea with pear (I used a caramelized pear tea and ended up drinking half of it, but it still counts)
Salt for purification, protection. Bay leaf for protection, strength. Orange peel for good fortune. Pear for longevity. Black tea for strength, banishing negativity.
You could use slices of orange to float in the tub, I suppose, but I wanted to eat my orange. As you wash, scrub away from your center to banish the negativity.
Bath Magic Tip
If you’ve got an exam or project coming up soon, bathe in rosemary to increase memory retention and focus.
Send me a symbol, and I’ll write a starter in which my muse is…

((sorry for the wait! ;u; I hope this will be okay!)) Emma made her slowly, but with a purpose, to the local "witch". She had heard that this woman could read fortunes so she was going to hopefully be told about her love life as it was practically going nowhere at that point. It was pretty warm that day so she had slipped her long blonde hair back in a ponytail (save for a section that continued to fall in front of her eye). Eventually she finally made it to the shop and went in. "Hello?"
Standing at her worktable, Maddie was in the middle of grinding herbs for a particular spell. Her hair was braided down her back, and she wore her usual work uniform of a long black dress. A pointed hat sate on the table beside her. Hard at work, she jumped a bit when she noticed that a customer had walked in.Quickly, she set aside her pestle and mortar and plunked the hat on her head, turning to face the other woman. “Oh, hello! Have you need of my services?”
“Good, then. I’ll look forward to it.” She smiled pleasantly, sitting back a bit in the chair to get comfortable.
“Great” she smiled and grabbed one the small drink menus of the table. “So, what would you like?”
Maddie picked up a menu as well, pering at the drinks. “Hmm...oh! There’s a maple latte. That definitely sounds good.”
(Another new series! WOO! Tune in every Saturday for a new sigil)
Sigil Craft Week One; Depression And Anxiety
These sigils are not going to cure your depression and anxiety. They will not fix all of your problems. But they will lend a warm and friendly hand in your time of need.
The first sigil is for you to start the day fresh and new, without the depression or negativity of yesterday carrying over. You would use this sigil when you wake up in the morning. This is really important to me because I think too many depression sigils aim too high. Getting over depression is something you have to take one day at a time, and that was the thought process behind making this one. It isn’t overambitious, it is a reachable goal.
The second sigil is for people who feel alone, stressed, anxious or depressed late at night to be able to have a peaceful sleep or just a relaxed evening. Amongst a flurry of negative emotion it’s important to find a moment of calm within the storm, especially if you’ve had a bad day.

15. “C-can you please call an ambulance? I th-think I’m dying.”
*she smiles a bit, still pained, and squeezes Eliza’s hand* “Thanks….” *she starts to drift into unconsciousness*
“Wait, no! Stay with me!” *slightly panicky*
*she doesn’t reply, having already fallen asleep* *she’s definitely breathing though and she seems a little calmer*
((i hope this is okay?) A white husky wandered around until he saw Madeline and ran towards her. He stopped just before her and sat down, wagging his tail furiously. He has an iron cross around his neck, somewhat hidden under his fur.
((It’s perfect! ^.^))
Madeline had been gathering herbs in her garden when the dog ran up to her. Turning toward it, she let out a small laugh and reached a hand out to it. “Hello, doggy. And where did you come from?” She grinned.
Maddie hurried into her room, searching for something that might fit him. After a few moments, she found a pair of sweatpants and a long T-shirt that would hopefully fit him. She carried them back out. “Ah, here you go–try these on. Sorry I don’t have anything better. I mostly have dresses, really,” she told him apologetically.
He smiled when she handed them to him. “Ah, danke, und I don’t mind. I’ll go home tonight und actually have some clothes.” He put the sweatpants on right there before taking the coat off, handing it to her. He then put the shirt on. “That’s a little better.
Keeping her gaze averted and ignoring the flush of her cheeks, Maddie waited for him to change. She took the coat and glanced at him, then smiled again. “Oh, good! At least they fit you. Oh, ah--when you’re working here, you can wear anything, so long as it doesn’t make the customers indecent. Usually I wear something, well, witchy.” She chuckled lightly.

Maddie nodded, carefully setting the rose aside and glancing at the book again. She looked up just as the notebook and pencil appeared, and she marveled at the ease with which Denali could conjure things. She tried again, this time concentrating on conjuring a book she’d read several times
Denali stared down at the paper before her, thinking of what she was going to write exactly. Sighing softly, she let go of the pencil, allowing it to write out whatever she could possibly think of that was important at the moment. Quickly looking at Maddie while she concentrated on the task that she was working on at the moment.
The book appeared in Maddie’s hand a few moments later, and she opened it eagerly--only to find that the words printed inside were not the story she remembered, but instead gibberish. She frowned. “Well, that’s...interesting.” She looked over at Denali and blinked, watching the pencil. That must be another skill contained within the spell book.
“Lost, eh?” Maddie offered her a friendly smile, hoping her nervousness wasn’t showing. “Well, where were you meeting them? Maybe I can help you find it.” She’d definitely had days like that. Hopefully, she could at least do something to help her.
Laura nodded, cheeks turning red for a moment. “Oh, I was meeting them at the library.” She shrugged her shoulders. She seemed so far off from her meeting spot that it was just silly.
“Oh! I can take you to the library, no problem. It’s not far from here; but the streets do twist and turn a little around here, don’t they?” Maddie kept her friendly smile in place. “Oh, I’m Maddie, by the way.”

“Really? Well, then I guess they did their job, hm?” Maddie sat up a little straighter. “That’s great! If you need any more, you know where to find me.” She gave a soft laugh.
Emma smiled brightly. “They really did work. I’m sure I will be coming by more often!”
“Good, then. I’ll look forward to it.” She smiled pleasantly, sitting back a bit in the chair to get comfortable.
