This is amazing!
February 2 is Imbolc. It’s also the day Candelaria is celebrated. Oya, one of Santeria’s orisha, shares the Virgin of Candelaria’s feast day. She’s said to be the spirit of the Niger River and Queen of the Cemetary Gates; as a storm orisha, she blows hurricane winds from Africa to the Caribbean. She’s associated with mullein, also known as the Hag’s Taper, the Witch’s Taper, and Corpse Candle because the dried stalks can be used as torches (it’s also used for pulmonary ailments and ear infection). Oya is said to have left her boring husband–Ogun the sacred ironworker–for the warrior Chango who made her his chief military advisor. Typical offerings: 9 eggplants, acarajé, 9 purple candles, glass of wine.
