He listens intently, watching her go through a list of possible suspects and recollecting to him the events of tonight. He set his glass down, now half empty, before he can drink any more – he will need his wits.
Rubbing his fingers against his temple, the Prince was silent for a long while before finally speaking, “ It is good that you threw the dagger away. You cannot be seen with such a weapon. Let’s hope no one finds it. And where is this Tom? What reason does he have to protect you, and keep all of this a secret?” Perhaps Tom is just a simple servant, with a conscience – but no one in Kings Landing are truly altruistic.
He tilted his head, considering her, “ You did well, Mira. It will be fine. Just … try to find Tom tomorrow, and speak with him. Make sure he is on your side, always,”
“ For now, you should rest. I will see what i can do to discover who it was who sent the guard after you,” He promised, “ If it is not the Queen or the Imp, then it could be someone with some gold to spare – perhaps someone close to the Lannisters. Ironwood, hm? Who were you discussing this with, may I ask? If the ironwood trade is the only reason behind why anyone would seek to harm you, you cannot take anyone with an interest in it off the table,”
“I’m afraid it will be found, thrown so carelessly...”
But they cannot trace it back to me, can they ? How would they ? She tried to reassure herself, taking faith in the Prince’s words that she had done the right thing.
Tom...
“Tom is a coal boy in the Keep. I... I don’t know, he has been offering help and I have turned him away before because I was afraid but... Now it’s both our heads if we are found out, so we have to trust each other.”
We’re in this together now, My Lady, he’d said, and he was right. As to why he seemed so set on helping her, she could not say nor understand why.
You should not meddle in the High Lords and Ladies’ games, we all know who gets hurt the first.
Not that she was not thankful for it. She nodded at Prince Doran’s words, confident that Tom shall seek for her the next morning.
Mira remembered the meeting, then. It had been pleasant to make them so angry, but had it been wise ?
“Representatives for Lord Whitehill.”
Just saying his name added venom to her voice.
"Lord Morgryn and Lord Andros. Tyrion Lannister invited me. When he told me he was meeting Whitehills so they would supply to the Crown, I had to come. The Whitehills don’t know how to handle ironwood, it is not their trade and they will be stealing it from my family.” she clenched her fists, furious that they shall even try to do such thing. Ironwood had been the Forresters’ livelihood for centuries, it was a craft and not something they could just pick up. She could already picture the state of their trees handled by them, and it broke her heart.
"Lord Tyrion said he will have to consider my offer first. Lord Andros was not too happy about it...”
Maybe Lord Andros had sent that guard after her. If he had, she hoped he’d be there to see her alive when she’d venture inside the gardens again. Alive, breathing, and protecting her deal. Now that she reflected on it, it sounded more than logical that it shall be him.
