          “ This is... my island. ”  There’s never really a break time. Not when you’re the only one with over half a brain cell in the entire police force, private detective agency and government for that matter. But today, for a few hours, he would be humored. Near was curled up in a way that made him appear like a cotton ball, sitting on a large beanbag chair, his legs pressed against his chest and hair unkempt. He’s staring at the gaming device in his hands intently, giving very little notice to the one he speaks to. His voice is content however. L’s island was incredibly neat and tidy, yet very cute with an abundance of color coordinated everything. Mostly peaches and pinks, paired with stark white in contrast with the occasional pop of something teal. ** The Big Near Autism Headcanon. 

I’ve put the majority of it under read more due to it being a little over 4,000 words.

Near / Nate River is on the autism spectrum with a moderate to severe form of autism which was previously known as Asperger’s syndrome. His functionality ranges from highly function to needing a good amount of improvement.  Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD, is the name for a group of developmental disorders. ASD includes a wide range, “a spectrum,” of symptoms, skills, and levels of disability. Everyone is different when on the spectrum, different severities and functionalities. Common and primary symptoms of autism includes ongoing difficulty with communication, interaction with others and social problems. Repetitive behaviors and limited interests or activities. Symptoms unique to the individual that disrupts the ability to function socially, at work or school and in other areas of life. While some people are only mildly impaired with symptoms, others are severely. Previously called Asperger’s Syndrome is, for example, a milder form of autism. There are treatments and services that can improve one’s ability to function / quality of life.

Near grew up primarily within Wammy’s house where he received a great deal of support for his condition. He went through several diagnostic tests from the time he was around a toddler to when he reached elementary school age. Near lost his parents at a very young age, and was sent to live at another orphanage until around 7 years old. At that orphanage he wasn’t as well cared for but eventually he was consulted by doctors. It was clear to the doctors, psychologists and other experts that he was indeed autistic, but on what area of the spectrum would be more defined into his later life. Near, showing a great aptitude for problem solving and a vast intelligence was then taken in by Wammy’s house where his support group was vast and he received a great amount of help in his day to day life.

Symptoms of autism include the following, at varying degrees and of varying importance and how present it is in Near’s life. Each symptom will be broken down into three parts as each symptom’s severity and prominence in their life changes as time goes on. From childhood, teenage years, to adulthood.
