Not me having just posted a chapter to my fic today that explored Dick's actual relationship with the Robin mantle (like why it exists).
Essentially, for anyone not in the know:
Dick's mom called him Robin when he was little, and in some continuities it was even his unofficial "stage name" with the Flying Graysons from the rest of the circus. The actual original suit he wears, is literally just his Flying Graysons costume! (literally so cute I cannot stop picturing my sweet baby trying to go after Zucco in his little leotard T-T)
When Dick begins training with Bruce, he intentionally made his suit in his Family's colors and used his childhood nickname to honor his parents. His motivation to become Robin at all is to not just avenge his parents - but more importantly to honor them by doing good with their name. That's also why he doesn't wear pants! Most leotards, especially for such a young kid, don't have real shorts and certainly not full-length leggings. Leggings would be worn either over or under the leotard- pretty much just like Ballet!
Dick, having grown up in a circus and well-adjusted to performing and training in a leotard without tights? Of course he would find pants cumbersome! They would wrinkle at the joints, restricting movement- and even with a proper suit, he clearly chooses that he prefers the comfort of a short leotard. Bruce, iirc, actually did at some point encourage Robin to wear tights and Dick just. Didn't like the feel. (not Lego Batman- although they do it too lol).
All this to say, Dick would 100% be heartbroken if anyone tried to steal the name and lose the colors. I'm shocked it's not a bigger thing in canon, honestly. It's also a large part of why Dick never wanted anyone else in the suit- it was, for him, one of so few pieces of his parents he truly had left. Robin was love. Robin was family. Robin was warmth and colors...
To Dick, handing it off without his express permission or drastically changing the core elements would be like saying "we hate your parents". It's honestly, imo, a very very beautiful part of his character's complexity. He's not just angry at Jason and cruel to Tim - for Dick, he just truly [rightfully] feels that he's the only one allowed to pass that mantle. It's his.
PS: I know there's probably not many that don't know this yet, but I know Fandom babies might not have learned this yet and they might like to learn. 🩷💙 We teach the Fandom babies, for we were once the same!
