Mini fiction — Regulus Black (and no gender character)

Moving had never been my cup of tea. All that planning, because you only had yourself to rely on, was tiring. Yet, I was already used to packing my suitcase every week, for eight years now, to go to my mother's house for one week, and my father's for the next. It was the hardest chore for a child; it was like having to endure a choice that hadn't been mine. Packing one life into a suitcase to go to another.

My parents' divorce had happened eight years ago. At the time, I didn't really know what was happening, I didn't understand—maybe I didn't want to understand—but I hadn't noticed anything, absolutely nothing had happened. I was convinced that the life I had was going to stay as it was. Until one evening, in the living room, when my parents announced their separation, my mother said, "It doesn't mean we don't love you anymore." Yes, that was the phrase. That phrase you find everywhere, in books, in films, and elsewhere. A common phrase, like when you learn of the death of a loved one and say, "I'm sorry for you."

Today, this move was special; I was leaving my hometown, London, for Bath. I was leaving my father behind and moving with my mother. No more packing chores, but a whole new life.
