Were there Alex/Thom fics before this one? Technically yes, but this really is the one that started it all. I think it's especially notable for having Alex be the one who is toxically enamored with Roger, when I feel like that was (and still is in a lot of fics) more typically Thom's role.
Tooth and Talon series by @tempest-prognosticator
So, the reason why Strange Bedfellows has the pretentious little roman-numeral "II" tacked onto the title is because an outline of the fic set in the SotL years sat untouched on my computer for like, 2 years at least. But honestly, what I had planned was too similar to The Dark is Light Enough, and I didn't have the enthusiasm to write it. It wasn't until I read Tooth and Talon, whose second fic is takes place in Kel's time, that I got the idea to set Strange Bedfellows 14 years later. I just love an older version of Alex and Thom so much--especially in this series, an AU where Jon died and Roger is king. Alex and Thom are both so much more self-possessed, but the fact that we know What Could Have Been makes the narrative as a whole feel so delightful unstable. Also Roger's youngest son is literally named after Alex... Baby Sandy I would die for you!!!
The Grim Gray Hills by Ankhiale
"Just" an Alex fic, not an Alex/Thom fic, but this one is also SO foundational. As far as I know it's the originator of the "Hill Country as a marginalized/colonial periphery" trope, and for that I'm eternally indebted to it. Also it has one of the most memorable lines of fic (to me) ever:
Roger drags you all the way back to his rooms, kicks the door shut behind him, and slams you into a wall. He stares at you long and hard. "My esteemed grandfather was a genocidal maniac," he says at last. "Don't you dare finish his work for him."
The Girl Who Can't Break Up, The Boy Who Can't Leave by Kjellarnen
This fic is inspired by The Grim Gray Hills, and takes a similar approach towards the Hill Country while dwelling more on Alex and Delia's relationship.
The Whitest Shroud for the Waiting Dead by @isnt-it-pretty
An Alex/Thom-as-ghosts fic that isn't a fix-it, though it isn't quite tragic either. What I like most about this one is that we get to see the younger generation come to terms with Alex's legacy, and interrogate the narratives their parents have spun about coronation day.

This one is more recent, but I absolutely love the author's take on Thom, who is both cleverer and more like Roger in this fic, as well as the omnipresence of Alanna (even as she doesn't actually appear on page), who both Alex and Thom are entirely obsessed with. Another not-quite-fix-it, but with an entirely different tone.
We're Leaving Our Shadows Behind Us by @theladyragnell
Finally an honorable mention to this fic, which really is not about Alex at all, but is so touching for the very fact that it gives us an Alanna who has very much not forgotten about him, and is using his memory in her instruction of Neal.
