ABBOTT ELEMENTARY 4.16 – Books

(Obvious blanket fuck harry potter disclaimer)

I’m white so obviously take what I have to say with a grain of salt but it does set off some alarm bells for me to be casting a Black man to play a character who is:

* Repeatedly described in the text as extremely ugly

* In part defined by an unrequited romantic and sexual obsession with the (white) protagonist’s mother

* Textually a former member of a racial supremacist organization, only defecting after the death of aforementioned white woman

Also who has a backstory where he gets tormented and bullied by a group of white kids, including being hung upside down (!!!), which I cannot possibly imagine they will handle at all tactfully given the massive change in connotation this casting brings

This is yet another example of how making a character Black without considering how that affects the entire perception of the narrative, can lead to racist consequences that could have been avoided if anyone had just... Thought about it. There are many characters that can be recast as Black and that leads to similar or even better narrative development! This is not that.

Did everyone miss the part where Dumbledore validated Hermione by telling harry she was right about being nice to them? Where sirius’ treatment of kreacher contributed to kreacher going to bellatrix and thus even his own death?

Or what about the part where dumbledore offered dobby 10 galleons a week plus weekends off, but dobby took the lower pay because he liked work better?

I guess so. Nuance flies over the head.

I can never understand how Snape apologetics can stand up for him when he CANONICALLY does this shit.

I can maybe, maybe, understand those who haven’t read the books standing up for him, because honestly the movies don’t cover all the horrible stuff he does. But those who have read the books and still stick up for him baffle me.

I mean, you don’t see anyone sticking up for the Dursley’s or Umbridge, when they do the same stuff to Harry as Snape. How is Snape any different?
