Full Interview with Style Magazines (QLD) Q. Describe the path of Weakling so far (eg: when you started, highlights, low-lights etc…) I started producing music in my bedroom a couple of years ago. I’ve now got an office/studio and heaps more experience under my belt.
Q. What instruments and/or equipment do you work with? Software: Ableton Live and Reason Hardware: Akai and Novation MIDI DJ controllers. I sometimes bring different types of guitars into tracks as well.
Q. What genre / style of music do you play? It’s electronic music, but specifically a combo of house, tech and beats.
Q. Do you perform only originals / remixes / covers? I play live mixes of originals with borrowed tracks and other found sounds.
Q. Where does your musical inspiration come from? Inspiration usually comes to me from trial and error. Sometimes you mess up while producing a track and it gives birth to a whole new direction/sound.
Q. How long on average does it take to remix/produce a song from start to finish? Anywhere from a few hours to a few months. I have 100+ half finished tracks and most will be abandoned or only partially used for new releases.
Q. Which three words would you use to describe Weakling? Resonating, Escalating, Self-Deprecating
Q. What is the best thing about playing live? Getting people/friends into a vibe.
Q. What is the worst thing about playing live? Drinking way too much before a gig and messing up.
Q. Any pre-gig rituals? One spoonful of Nutella and two fingers of Jim Beam.
Q. Which band/musician/DJ/festival would you most like to open for? My dream gigs would be with motivational speaker Tony Robins or comedians Tim and Eric.
Q. Where can people listen to your music? www.soundcloud.com/weakling www.facebook.com/wklng
Q. What’s next for Weakling? I have secret game-changing news in early 2015 but you can expect more remixes, singles and status updates about arm wrestling.
Yesterday acid stag premiered my remix of an incredible track by Floria.

Thoughts on Future Beats
I received a message on Soundcloud about my sound changing from early EPs which made me want to write a few of my thoughts.
When I first started uploading tracks (around 2010-11), I had no idea beats / trap / bass / future "whatever" would become a full-blown movement. A few years ago it felt like it came from a small online community of musicians who just discovered you could play an Akai MIDI pad like a piano. Admittedly most of my early productions drew influences from this sound and I must have consciously tried to emulate stuff from Brainfeeder and/or Wedidit.
Even by late-2012, it was obvious instrumental beats were going to become a really big "thing" and I could sense the sound was becoming over-saturated, bloated and (in my opinion) a bit boring.
With more beat producers came more competition. To be noticed, tracks needed to use more samples, more fills, more EQ, more drops, more buildups and more flashy effects. Tracks seemed more like producers flexing their engineering muscle for attention, often at the expense of what could have been an awesome song.
