Summary:Â âMaybe you were right to be anxious.â

A/N: I have no excuse for how late this is. iâm sorry iâve been mia for a year. lifeâs been.... crazy
The sun was high in the sky when you came to - it peeked through the window and between the curtains. You felt the soft duvet over your body, but you didnât remember coming up to your room. As sleep relinquished itâs hold over you, your memories slowly filtered back.Â
Peter. The bear. Wanda.
Fuck, Wanda.Â
You remembered pouring your heart out to her at the kitchen table, and that cold feeling of fear that had cut through you.Â
You remember Wanda, the profile of her face in the passenger seat. You sat up, head heavy from not sleeping enough, and feel the weight of another personâs arms fall away.
âGood morning.â she said, and for a moment, you imagined a world before everything fell apart. What would it have been like to have met Wanda when everything was normal? Would you have ever even met her?
You swallowed down those thoughts.
âGood morning,â you replied, âwhat are you doing in my bed?â
She laughed softly.Â
âYou said you wanted me to stay, so I stayed.â
Her lips twitch into a gentle smile. It astounded you that only a few weeks ago, Wanda was a soldier with the Militia. How could someone who was so sweet and good to you even associate with a group like that?
âIâve never slept next to another person before,â you whispered. âNot... soundly.â
Her lips parted for the stuttering breath she takes. Was your honesty too much?
âIâm... glad Iâm the first,â she responded, voice just as quiet as yours.Â
âYouâre full of firsts for me,â you laid back down, eye-level with her. âIâve never trusted anyone to stay here. Never stabbed anyone before.â
Wanda laughed.
âWell, I hope Iâm your first and last for that.â
Your chest tightened, and words tumble from your mouth before you can stop them.
âI want you to be my first kiss.â
It felt foolish to say. Those words alone silenced the room, stilled the air. Wandaâs eyes widened fractionally, but she did not recoil.
You reached out and brushed a lock of brown hair from her cheek. Her skin was warm.
âCan I... please?â
She nodded, eyes fluttering shut.
Your heart hammered against your ribs as you lean forward. you almost wished that Wanda was taking the lead.
You pressed a kiss to her mouth, tentative, unsure.
With both your mouths closed, you almost felt nothing. Just soft pressure. Wandaâs eyes open and you can see the light brown kaleidoscope of her iris, refracting in the morning light.
What do you do next? When you leaned in again, Wandaâs hands come up to touch your cheek, your neck. More gentle pressure. The blanket fell away, letting you move closer to Wanda; you wanted the closeness. Just being next to her was enough comfort.
Wandaâs tongue darts out to brush your bottom lip - you jerk in surprise, but donât pull away. It was easy to follow her lead. Open your mouth, little by little, let her discover you. When Wanda licked into your mouth, you gasp. She swallowed up the sound.Â
Your bodies move automatically; Wanda sits up, straddling your thighs. Her lips barely left yours as she went. You were forgetting to breath, too overwhelmed by it all.
âEasy,â she murmured, pressing a hot kiss to the corner of your mouth. âWant to slow down?â
You shook your head.
She chuckled softly.
âOkay, okay.â
Just as Wanda placed a kiss on your neck, a quiet thud came from downstairs. The sound stopped Wanda too.
âYou heard that, right?â you asked.
âYeah.â She panted, out of breath. âPeter?â
âCame from downstairs.â Maybe he had woken up already, you did not want to assume.
You carefully maneuver out from under her and grab your sweater.
âIâll check it out.â
âWait,â Wanda catches your wrist. âGive me a minute, Iâll come with you.â
âNo, stay here. Youâre still injured.â
âBarely.âÂ
âJust stay. Itâs probably nothing.â even as you said that, your stomach clenched nervously.Â
The euphoria from before was draining away. You crept down the stairs; no lights were on, the curtains and shutters were still drawn. No one was there.
You went to the kitchen - Wanda might need another pain killer.Â
Standing in the door that led to the backyard was an extremely tall man in all black clothes.
Youâre stopped in your tracks, unable to move when he spots you. It takes you a moment of neither of you moving to recognize him.
âI thought I told you to come back later.â you said, trying to keep your voice even.
The man, the Winter Soldier, tilted his head.
âIt is later.âÂ
So he spoke.
Was that a joke? What the fuck? The Winter Soldier joked?
His voice was rough. You tried not to panic, not to freak out, but that was becoming harder and harder by the second.
âHow did you get in?â you asked, taking the plates to the sink. It felt wrong to turn your back on him. âDid I leave a window open?â
âThis place...â he said, âis not as secure as you think.â
You scoffed.
âIâll try not to feel offended by that.â
The man did not smile. He merely watched you.
âSo, what do you want?â you prompted. âWhat do you need?â
He shook his head, strands of long matted hair flicking water.
âDonât need anything. Iâm here for you.â
âWhat the hell does that mean?â How fast were you? could you run? Barefoot and in your pajamas? Could you shout to Peter and Wanda?
Footsteps halted your conversation. Wanda appeared in the doorway, brows furrowed in concern. She must have heard your voices from the hall.
âWanda,â you said, taking a deep breath, âwe have a guest.â
âJesus Christ,â she whispered.
âIâm not here to hurt you, Iâm here to warn you.â He raised his hand to calm her, but Wandaâs eyes are still wide with worry. âThe Militia are moving in. Theyâre a few days out from here.â
âWhat?â your gut twisted. âI didnât hear any reports over the radio, itâs been silent.â
âThey know people listen in. Theyâve found a new frequency to broadcast over,â the soldier said, moving to sit at the dining table. He looked exhausted. âAnyone whoâs been reporting in radio towers or bases in the area have been eliminated.â
A couple days out; you needed more time to prepare, to fortify the house, to defend yourself.
âWhy do you care?â You asked, âwhy help us?â
âYou said I could stay.â Ice blue eyes meet yours. âSo here I am.â
You looked at Wanda. Was there time to defend the house? No.
But there was time to run.
âWe need to pack.â
----
âWhere are we going?â asked Peter. âI just got here!â
âWe need to go West,â you said, zipping the bag shut. According to the Soldier, you had three, maybe four hours before the Milita reached the house. âWe canât go east since itâs desolated, so we have to go west.â
âBut what about the farm? What about your life here?â
You did not want to think about it; the mere thought of abandoning your home made your chest ache. You had lived here for so long, you had foolishly planted roots in a time where nothing was ever certain, where nothing was permanent.
Now you were reaping the consequences.
âPeter,â you said instead of answering, âgo down to the basement and fill this with whatever food will fit.â
You pushed an empty crate into his hands.
âThey might pass by the house,â he said hopefully, but you could see the despair in his eyes. âThey might not even see the house.â
You smiled sadly.
âThat would be nice, Peter. But you know that isnât going to happen. Theyâll take the house and us with it.â
There was too much to do. You needed to release the animals; they canât come with you and you couldnât dream of leaving them to the Militia, so you opened the gates and let them roam free, into the forest.
You and Peter worked to round up as much rations as you could; canned food and jugs of water. Wanda gathered first aid, blankets, your radio, maps; whatever she thought was needed.
The Winter Soldier stood outside, listening. It unnerved you, but the idea of ordering him around made you feel uncomfortable.
âHere,â Wanda came into the kitchen where you were stuffing one last crate with canned vegetables and tuna. She had a backpack in her hands. âThis oneâs filled with the rope, wire, and fishing hooks.â
âGood, bring it to the truck,â you said, âdid you leave anything upstairs?â
âNope, Iâve got everything.â She was wearing the jacket sheâd worn the first day you met her. Where had this morning gone?Â
The soft kisses, the gentleness... all replaced with composed panic.
Wanda. You tried not to panic when you thought about her. What would happen if the Militia find her, alive and well when she was supposed to be six feet under? you shuddered at that. You thought of this as she walked out the back door.
Peter rushed through the kitchen with all his bags.
âYou good, Y/N?â he asked, out of breath.
âNearly done. Load up your truck.â
He does as you said to; good kid.
You wanted to say goodbye; to the house. But was there time? The house that had protected you for months, sheltered you, kept you warm... this was goodbye?
You catch a glimpse of the living room from the kitchen doorway. Wanda had danced with you there. Up the stairs, she had kissed you in your bed.
The back door swung open Winter Soldier grabbed your arm.
âTheyâre here,â he said softly. âWe must go.â
You grab the crate off the table and let him drag you out the door. It felt wrong to leave the house unlocked; unguarded
Outside you heard voices. Shouts.
âGet to the cars.â You tell Peter, whoâs frightened stiff a few feet from the back door. âWe need to go now.â
A break in the distant tree line stole the breath from your lungs.

A/N: Hey⊠Iâm back. I stopped writing when I entered university, now iâm ending my second year. Iâm so so sorry i left you guys hanging for so long, but lifeâs been crazy as fuck. someone messaged me about this a few days ago, and i couldnât stop thinking about it. Hopefully iâve gotten better at writing!
The ride back was terse.Â
Peter followed behind your truck, Wanda sitting next to you with the machete still tight in her hand. Your own hands gripped the wheel tightly. You were afraid that you wouldnât be able to let go.
The moment you twisted the key in the ignition, Wanda had turned to you and asked in a calm voice. âDo you know if he was followed?â
Immediately, your chest tightened. âNo. I donât.â
âDid you use secure channels?â
âOf course we did-â
âDid you change them every night?â
âIâm not stupid,â You snapped. It wasnât Wanda who frustrated you, it was the uncertainty of being followed. You had been safe, but there was always an element of unknown that could come back and bite you. âI knew what I was doing. Believe it or not I survived just fine before you came along.â
Wanda had sat back. âIâm just covering all the bases; no need to be so sensitive.â
âWe were as careful as possible.â
ââCareful as possibleâ doesnât ensure anything.â She responded coolly.
âWhy do you care if youâre going to leave?â
That stung. You could feel the sting when the words hit Wanda.

That stung. You could feel the sting when the words hit Wanda.
Now you sat in silence, staring straight ahead, driving back home while simmering in subdued anger. The idea of welcoming another stranger into your house make your stomach flip. So much had changed over the past weeks, you were scared for the future. The good mood you had been in after looting the town. You thought about Wandaâs questions.Â
âWanda,â you said quietly. âI get thatâs youâre upset, but if I drive back to the farmhouse, someone could follow us and know our location. If we stop for the night, we could be ambushed, eaten by bears, or... or...â
âHey, calm down.â Wanda said just as softly. âWhat are you asking me, Y/N?â
You swallowed. âWhat do I do, Wanda?â
âWe go back to the farm.â She looked over, trying to reassure you. âThen we wait on alert for the next week. Just in case.â
âJust in case,â you agreed, pushing your doubt away. âIâm... sorry for all of this.â
She turned to you, and you could feel her eyes on you. When Wanda didnât speak you kept going.
âIâm sorry about inviting a total stranger into the house, but... you donât know what it was like when I was alone,â you said. âDay after day... there were times when I thought I was the only one left. That stupid radio was all I had for months, and when I found Queens, or, Peter, I cried. For the first time in years, I had a friend. Someone I could talk to without being afraid that they were going to kill me or hurt me.â
âYou needed him,â Wanda whispered.Â
You nodded, gripping the wheel even tighter.
âI needed him. I still do.â
And I need you.
The thought punches its way through your mind, but you donât let it get far.
Thirty minutes later, you pulled into the long driveway, mouth dry. Before you could cut the engine, Wanda rested her hand on yours.
âY/N, if you said you were safe on the radio, you were safe. Iâm not trying to scare you into worrying.â She said. âDonât let it control you. This is still your house, so you make the decisions.â
She might as well have said donât let the looming thought of being attacked in the night by a group New Alliance Hydras control you. Itâs not like that constantly pervaded the edges of your thoughts every night before you slept and when you woke up.Â
Instead of saying that, you nodded, and turned off the engine.
âPeter,â you called to him as you jumped out of the truck. âCan you help us move these into the house?â
You were referring to the bags of food and supplies in the cargo bed. The three of you made multiple trips back and forth from the house to the truck. Feeling the weight of each bag helped soothe the knot of anxiety that coursed through you so aggressively.Â
Once finished transporting, you stood in the kitchen with Wanda and Peter.Â
You turned to the young man. Peter was older than you anticipated, with wavy brown hair that was slick with dirt. âYou must be exhausted. Do you have any other bags?â
âNo, just this.â He gestured to his single backpack, slung on his shoulder.
âIâll show you to your room. Thereâs a bathroom for you to take a shower and freshen up.â
He looked so relieved, you smiled. âThank you, North. Thank you so much. I canât remember the last time I had running water.â
You sniffed.
âI have an idea.â
You saw Wanda rooting through the liquor cabinet as you stalked up the stairs. Once out of earshot, Peter spoke.
âWho is she?â He asked softly. He sounded curious, not confrontation.Â
There was hesitation that Peter detected. âY/N, what is it?â
âShe was a member of the New Alliance,â you said carefully. âBut she defected.â
Peter noticeably tensed. âShe was a Hydra?â
Hydra was a nickname created by the Protectors. All that time in the East really seasoned Peterâs vocabulary.Â
âYeah.â There was no way to sugar coat it, but you didnât want scare Peter off. âShe was. I found her in the forest after she deserted and I... I stabbed her, it wasnât bad!â
Peterâs eyes widened in complete surprise as you rushed to placate him.
âWe worked it out! Donât worry!â you said.Â
âOkay, okay,â he said, shaking his head in disbelief. âGlad to know my two roommates nearly killed each other.â
âHey, I am not your roommate, Iâm your landlord.â
You chose one of the bigger rooms for Peter, right next to yours and close to the bathroom. He nearly squealed in delight when he saw the double bed and massive windows.
âThis is amazing!â he gushed, flopping down on the soft duvet before you tell him not to. âThis bed is so big! And the lights really work! How did you find this place, Y/N?â
You wince. Now isnât the time to bring that up.Â
âGet cleaned up and rest. Iâll make you something if youâre hungry.â You turn and left, calling out behind you.
âIâll introduce you to Goat tomorrow!â
----
âIâve decided I like him.â Was the first thing Wanda says when you come downstairs.Â
âOh yeah? Why?â
âBecause heâs still a sweet kid despite everything.â Sheâs reclined on the couch in the living room, long hair tossed over one shoulder. âHe must have seen some horrible things out there but heâs still smiling and laughing. Heâs like a puppy.â
You laughed, but itâs more like a scoff.
âAnd here I thought Iâd have to convince to you to let us keep him.â You went to the kitchen in search of bread for toast and some sort of canned fruit to add nutrition. âIâve spoken to him long enough to know heâs a good kid, so we donât have to worry about it.â
âI never said I was worried.â
âYeah, you did.â
âWhen?â
âIn the car, Wanda. Like, an hour ago.â
âIâm worried about the Militia, not this kid,â she corrected. âJeez, Y/N, get it together.â
You turned and looked at her for a moment before rolling your eyes.
âThis is what I get for taking in a stray.â You muttered, but Wanda clicked her tongue.
âI heard that.âÂ
After you put together a simple toast with a side of fruit cocktail, you went to Wandaâs side, tentatively picking at the edge of her shirt to check her stitches. At this point, she didnât even flinch or stare at you - instead, she raised her arm as you checked.Â
âStill needs time.â you said, letting go of the hem. âI hope all the excitement didnât strain you too much.â
She rewarded your concern with a smile; a bright, full smile, and you hated the way your heart tripped.
âNah, Iâm a trooper. Nothing a little sleep or scotch wonât fix.â She hummed.Â
Trooper. Yeah. A trooper.
âDonât drink tonight,â you hate how much you sounded like a mom, but it needed to be said. âNow that Iâm all freaked out about potential safety breaches, I need you on your best.â
When you tried to leave, a hand caught your own and pulled you back.
âHey, come on.â Wanda led you to the couch so that you could sit next to her, leaning into her unwounded side. âYou can relax for a minute, right? Take a deep breath. Tonight was successful despite the grizzly bear.â
She was right - it had been a good night, what with all the food and supplies they found, and Peterâs arrival.
But something in you wouldnât calm down; the conversation you had with Wanda in the car was still so present in your mind.
Why do you care if youâre going to leave?
You wish you could have snatched back those words. As irritating as Wanda was, the thought of the house being empty made your skin crawl. Maybe it wouldnât be so bad because Peter was there now, but even then, he might not stay, then what?Â
âI can hear you thinking, Y/N,â Wanda chided gently. You hadnât even noticed that she was rubbing your arm to soothe you. âWhatever it is, let it go.â
âWhen are you going to leave?â You asked quietly.
her hand stopped.
âHuh?â
âI- nevermind. Itâs nothing.â
âNo, itâs something.â She looked at your face and for once, your could meet her eyes. âWhy? Do you want me to go?â
âNo,â you said quickly. âActually, I... God, this sounds stupid, but Iâd like you to stay as long as youâd like.â
The words tumbled out like water from a broken cup, but when they were out, your chest felt immediately lighter.
Wanda put the pieces together.
âYou want me to stay?â
It sounded so emotional and lame when she said it âWell... yes. But donât hold it over my head as if Iâm begging you to stay!â You snapped, standing up abruptly. âI know youâll get yourself killed out there, or at least stabbed again, so if anything Iâm doing you a favour.â
Perhaps it was your sudden change in demeanor, or the idea of getting stabbed again, but Wanda letâs out a sharp, bright laugh. Her shoulders jumped and she threw her head back.
âOkay,â she agreed, grinning up at you from where she sat. âIâll stay. How much is rent?â
âWill you help me with the farm?â
âOf course.â
You looked down at her, taking in the lean curves of her cheekbones and the tiny moles under her eyes. She was so beauti-
âHelp me around the place,â you decided, smiling right back. âThen Iâll consider your rent paid.â
Wanda stood up at that, and before you could push her away, you feel two arms wrap around you. The closeness made you lose your breath for a second, before you registered warmth and the smell of honeysuckle in her hair from the soap you made.Â
You could feel a second heartbeat through her chest, and you knew that she could feel the steady thump of yours.Â
Putting your arms around Wanda felt right. Holding on tightly, letting her press into you felt good. When was the last time you held another person and let them do the same?Â
âWanda,â you whispered. Perhaps it had been too long, but her arms felt like security - like the Militia wasnât real. Maybe if she held you forever, you could pretend like the world was still spinning, and half the population wasnât dead.
But in that moment of security, you felt something else.
Fear.
You remembered how the previous owner of this house had disappeared. How his family was gone too. Had they felt so scared to lose each other?
âY/N,â she whispered back. âWhat is it?â
You squeezed tighter; a reminder that this was real.Â
