          there   were   plenty   of   things   that   bucky   liked   more   about   sharon’s   place   than   he   did   his   own.   ( he   would   never   readily   admit   them. )   she   always   seem   to   have   the   things   he   never   would   have   thought   to   buy.   first   aid   supplies   when   targets   got   the   better   of   him,   dinner   that   didn’t   come   from   a   box.   it   felt   more   like   a   home.   he   wasn’t   exactly   trying   to   lay   down   roots   in   the   four   walls   he   was   supposed   to   call   home;   maybe   he   could   say   the   same   of   his   apartment   if   he   worked   to   make   it   his   own.   it   just   seemed              effortless   here. 

          the   thing   he   liked   the   most   about   it,   however,   was   the   company.   that,   he   could   admit   in   not   so   many   words.   he’d   come   to   rely   on   her   despite   his   best   efforts.   being   around   her   felt   easy,   and   if   that   meant   spending   more   time   where   she   was  .  .  .  so   be   it.  

          it   was   hard   to   sneak   up   on   someone   who   knew   all   too   well   how   to   be   undetectable,   and   it   wasn’t   at   all   what   he   had   set   out   to   do.   as   much   as   he   liked   staying   in,   there   was   also   a   lot   of   city   he’d   yet   to   rediscover.   he’d   only   meant   to   check   in   to   see   how   long   it   would   take   her   to   get   ready   so   they   could   go.   it   may   have   been   rude   just   to   watch,   but   he   would   argue   that   it   would   have   been   worse   to   interrupt.   so,   he   leaned   against   the   doorframe,   arms   tucked   to   his   sides   and   lips   set   into   an   amused   smile,   and   waited. 

          ❛ long   enough, ❜       he   offered   when   she   finally   spun   to   face   him.   the   tilt   of   his   lips   resembled   more   of   a   smirk   than   it   did   before.      ❛ don’t   mind   me.   pretend   i’m   not   here. ❜

        he   takes   stock   of   his   own   sobriety   as   he   tilts   his   glass   to   his   lips   &   drains   the   amber   liquid.   it   burns   on   his   tongue,   but   it   doesn’t   leave   a   fuzzy   feeling   in   its   wake   the   way   he   knows   it   should.   the   way   it   would   have   almost   a   century   ago.   he   hums   before   he   has   the   words,   the   sound   buzzing   on   his   lips.       ❛well,   that   makes   one   of   us.❜       he   grumbles,   chancing   a   look   to   her.       ❛you’re   not   sober   enough.   i’m   too   sober.   they   gotta   cancel   each   other   out,   don’t   y ‘ think?❜

          it   was   a   nice   idea.   to   be   undisturbed,   unbothered.   every   attempt   to   take   it   easy   was   always   interrupted   by   another   threat,   another   mission.   they   had   been   through   a  lot,   hadn’t   they?   their   time   was   due.   he   just   wasn’t   willing   to   believe   that   it   was   as   easy   as   speaking   it   into   existence.    then   again,   if   anyone   could   make   it   happen,   it   was   sharon.

          ❛i   think   that   sounds   like   a   great   idea.❜       he   punctuates   it   with   a   kiss   to   her   temple,   arm   wrapping   around   her   waist   just   to   keep   her   close.        ❛i   think   you’ll   be   bored   after   one   day,   though.❜       lips   curve   into   a   smile   that   lilts   with   the   teasing   tone   of   his   voice.    he’s   never   been   sure   of   what   to   do   with   time   that   wasn’t   anyone’s   but   his   own.   that   didn’t   mean   he   wasn’t   willing   to   take   it.       ❛you   think   they’ll   let   us   take   it   easy?❜

          leaning   against   the   window   frame,   he   watched   the   rain   come   down   in   sheets.   all   shades   of   blue   have   been   washed   from   the   sky   and   replaced   with   a   dark,   lifeless   gray.   thunder   rumbles   within   the   clouds,   louder   now   than   it   was   when   the   wind   had   first   picked   up.   it   was   getting   worse.   he   hums   quietly   in   response   to   steve’s   observation,   brows   pinching   together   if   only   for   a   moment.       ❛guess   you’re   stuck   with   me.❜       he   muses,   glancing   over   his   shoulder   to   find   the   other.   it   wouldn’t   kill   him   to   venture   out   into   the   weather;   he   certainly   wouldn’t   melt.   but   there   was   something   undeniably   peaceful   about   the   home   steve   had   made   for   himself  despite   the   storm   raging   just   outside.   he   wasn’t   exactly   itching   to   leave.
