The Night of Taneyamagahara - Directed by Kazuo Oga - Studio Ghibli
“One of the abilities handed down among men consists of various manipulative and more or less everyday strategies to keep women subordinate: how to suppress women, how to take away their enthusiasm, convince them, prevent their revolt or make them feel guilty if they do so.
The various manifestations of everyday male chauvinism seem insignificant and banal when taken separately. Their significance lies in the fact that if the woman does not recognise them in time and does not do something against them (and sometimes years pass before that happens, if ever) their compound and repeated use creates a more or less poisonous atmosphere that undermines women’s life energy, psychic and intellectual equilibrium and autonomy. This is how everyday male chauvinism creates the conditions of women being continuously at the disposal of men.
Because women are facing actions that are not obviously abusive or coercive, they have difficulty recognising them and that is exactly why it is difficult to address them. Most of the time, they are not even aware of their effects, thus when they sense the harmful effects, they do not recognise that they result from the manipulative manoeuvres. The first step in mapping everyday male chauvinism was for the professionals who were helping women to ask the question: why do so many women feel bad without being able to say why?”
- Everyday Male Chauvinism by Luis Bonino and Péter Szil
prostitution sets women up for violence.
women are taught to not trust strangers - prostituted women rely on strangers, going home to strangers, inviting strangers in their most vulnerable space. violent men know that.
women are taught not to get into strangers cars - prostituted women on the streets rely on that. they have to learn to ignore their instincts because they need money. violent men know that.
women are told to say no if they dont want a sexual interaction - prostituted women rely on saying yes even if they dont want sex. abusive men know that.
women are taught that they are responsible for their own safety - this means for prostituted women, if something happens to them, its their own fault. men know this is how they dodge accountability for abusing women.
a man who abuses a prostitute is a john, not an abuser. he is just a man paying for a service. a woman who allows herself to be sexually abused is not a victim, she provides a service.
the framing of prostitution as a service gives legitimisation to abusers, men who dont care about women‘s safety, protection, comfort, boundaries or own desires. it‘s sickening.
One thing I hate about the liberal tick of applying all patriarchal analysis to white men is that it’s supposed to be oh so woke and intersectional but just ends up assuming the worst of patriarchy is confined to white men only. Or worse yet “rich white men”.
Talking about patriarchy but repeating “cis het rich white men” over and over again to avoid criticizing non white men, poor men and males in various states of transition or “queerdom” actually plays right into the hands of patriarchy in terms of minimizing the issue.
Like how convenient is it for the patriarchy that the worst of its manifestations is somehow confined to a tiny pool of remote, classed white males. How convenient that all critiques of patriarchy are lobbed at the class of males that are the most untouchable and insulated from having those critiques be meaningful anyway.
Making y’all uselessly direct all of your ire at the Jeff Bezos’ and Elon Musks’ of the world and minimizing the culture of dominance almost all men on the planet adhere to and support is just yet another patriarchal smokescreen that I can’t believe people fell for.
Not to mention how Euro and Western centric it is. I can go literal months without laying eyes on a white man irl and I’m pretty sure the rates of male violence against women where I am is worse than the areas most densely populated with white males.
Mainstream feminism blathering on about “white males” is just yet another analysis that was once useful but has become neutered due to habitually sloppy misapplication.
