How is this guy running HUD?

Dr. Ben Carson turned former presidential candidate is now the newly minted Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). To say this was a series of unfortunate events is an understatement. Notice the shock on his face! :)

Those who have gone under his knife during his time as a neurosurgeon appear to heap praise upon his abilities even touting his hands as “gifted.” But from what has been seen from his time on the campaign trail to now has given me cause for concern.

Similar to Betsy DeVos, Carson is completely out of touch with the population he has been charged with serving. HUD provides affordable housing, upholds equal housing regulations and as the name implies, supports the development of America’s urban areas. Many of HUD’s beneficiaries are minorities and poor so intrinsic in Carson’s role is to combat poverty. I have no idea if he has any idea that this is part of his job.

Carson has also made some pretty outrageous statements. He said at the pyramids were built by Joseph (of The Bible fame) to store grain. Since these pyramids still exist, they can be visited and studied and the overwhelming consensus is that they are burial tombs. Why Carson would even make cause for this fact to be questioned is odd. But Carson’s crazy doesn’t stop there. He said that Obamacare is the worst thing since slavery and has compared gays to acts of bestiality.

This may be an oversimplification but my feeling is that Trump picked Carson to run HUD because he was black and the “U” in HUD stands for Urban, and the blacks live in the urban areas, and Carson grew up in Detroit which is urban and he lived in a house too.

Apparently, he was offered the position of Health and Human Services Secretary, which would have been a more logical appointment given his medical background, though I don’t think he would have been qualified for that one either.

We shall see… Oh, and Sec. Carson, I know you never look like it but please, stay woke!

It’s Women’s History Month so I thought I would take some time to spotlight our new Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos. In my last post I spoke of my disdain for the oft inappropriate use of the Ivory Tower label, but there is no person to whom that label is better ascribed than DeVos. She is a billionaire many times over, never went to public school for K-12 or higher education never sent her children to public schools and wants to push the idea of school choice and vouchers which will reduce funding for public schools, many of which are in desperate need of funds. 

Of all of Trumps cabinet picks, this one scares me the most. She has the ability to inflict the most and longest lasting damage to our democracy. Having attended private christian schools, she believes strongly in them and supports them financially. The school choice programs that she wants to increase would include schools which teach religious based curriculum that public funds would be supporting. While no one is paying attention, this is how the separation of Church and State will be slowly and silently eroded. 

Combine this with the rising cost of higher education and the Republican’s seeming disinterested in doing anything about it, the writing is on the wall. In order to maintain control a ruler the populace needs to be controlled. This is done through education. The bible will be the main subject and other skills will be taught as needed. Those who are deemed appropriate and able to afford it will attend college preferably private and/or Christian. They become educated and employed and continue the cycle. The process could already in motion as Jerry Falwell Jr. an Evangelical Christian and president of Liberty University, was named to head Trump’s Higher Education Task Force.  We need to stay woke about a lot as of late, but this particular issue deserves even more attention.

Ivory Tower:

Miriam-Webster Dictionary defines the Ivory Tower as: “an impractical often escapist attitude marked by aloof lack of concern with or interest in practical matters or urgent problems.” This is of course a picture of the Washington Monument, which many feel is symbolic of the Ivory Tower “syndrome” that has affected or infected D.C. This feeling is accurate in some cases (I’m comin’ for you in the next post DeVos)  I am not one of those people. I want my leaders to be well educated and informed. If this upsets the flyover states, the working and/or middle class then so be it. I do not want my leaders “dumbing it down” to appease certain groups of people. We “libs” who decide to get educated and happen to attend prestigious east or west coast schools are labeled as liberal elites and unfairly shoved into that Ivory Tower.  It is entirely possible to gain the support and respect of those who maybe less educated and it’s pretty simple... don’t be fake. Even idiots can spot someone being fake.

Welcome

Hello all and welcome to my blog. As my handle suggests, I am a progressive liberal living in Texas. While admittedly, this blog was started out of response to the 2016 campaign cycle, its intent is to provide support, solace, humor and hopefully a little knowledge along the way.

I will focus on issues that affect us all even though they may not appear to on the surface. My intent is not offend, but often offense will be taken by some even when presented with the reality of the truth. I know that recent events have opened the eyes of countless individuals and I’ll do my part to awaken even more!
