Mostly a WHA blog. I’m caught up on the manga so spoilers are likely if you’re new to the series, but I do tag for them ^^

I use #spoilers and #manga spoilers as blanket tags for any media I post about, but more specifically for WHA I’ll also use #wha spoilers and/or #witch hat atelier spoilers. I recommend filtering these if you want to avoid being spoiled on later plot points from the manga. I won’t be tagging anime content as spoilers, unless it’s a significant plot point.

Hi! I keep seeing orufrey art and was wondering if you could please explain roughly what’s going on with them? Like if there’s genuinely something romantic going on or implied? I plan to read/watch WHA soon but I wanted to have an idea going in. Thank u!

It’s hard to describe exactly what their deal is without getting into spoiler territory because their relationship and history together is so heavily intertwined with a certain plot point, but to answer your question, it’s not explicitly romantic at this point in the manga (although I will say there are circumstances that make the possibility of a relationship between them difficult, and we don’t have Olruggio’s POV yet.)

Howeverrr, there’s a reason orufrey is so popular within the fandom, and it’s not a huge stretch to think there might be something more there. They’re each other’s life partner (there’s a panel in a recent chapter where Olruggio imagines them growing old together), neither of them have ever shown any romantic interest towards anyone else, and they’re paralleled to an in-universe love story several times, so make of that what you will. The author, Kamome Shirahama, is also very LGBT friendly and frequently reposts/likes ship art of them on her twitter + we are introduced to a canon gay couple later on in the manga.

Regardless of whether it’s platonic or romantic, they have a very compelling relationship. Also, you’re in for a treat when you read the manga, it’s one of my favourite stories of all time and I wish I could read it again for the first time!

I think one of the worst things a story can be is unproblematic.

Nothing makes a story more unreadable than being able to see the author squirm apologetically for the story they actually want to write—wringing their hands and imploring the reader please, please don’t be mad, I know it’s ideologically questionable but I need you to not be mad at me!

For example: a Good King™️. It’s one thing for a story to present a fictional monarchy and ask me to root for it. It’s another thing for a story to say, hey, I know what you’re thinking—but don’t worry! I can justify this premise! I have introduced a lot of convoluted self-aware political justifications for why my king is good and likable without actually asking any risky ideological questions! These characters aren’t actually problematic! Don’t be mad at me!

Commit to the bit. Apologetic, defensive writing designed to bypass obvious criticisms often winds up offending me far more than stories that are just kind of surface-level problematic. If I’m gonna be a hater you cannot stop me; the more you insist that a character is actually a good oil tycoon because of all these exceptional situations and beyond my reproach, the more I resent you and hate your stupid book.

still caring about internet friends you lost touch with years ago is so embarrassing. yeah i had a deam we met up irl recently. the last time we spoke was maybe 7-8 years ago. i still wear the laces we randomly decided was a sign of our friendship. i dont know what any of your socials are or if youre even active on any. sometimes i see someones art resemble yours and i wonder for hours. do you still go by that name you chose? whenever i see it i wonder if its you. we couldve passed each other in this vastness a thousand times and not have a clue.
