happy halloween - the day the marauders fell apart
just had someone accuse me of using ai for my fics because i use a lot of dashes, is this how they felt during the salem witch trials?
ik its kinda shitty for me to suggest but if these comments truly annoy you replace the dashes with interchanging commas and brackets.
this is an absolute fair suggestion that i might start doing lol, i even purposely used the wrong kind of dash to avoid this but clearly that wasn’t enough 😭

tw: implied/past SA (NOT between james and regulus)
Despite being together for a few months and being two teenage boys, make-out sessions were rare. And yet there they were in the vacant Gryffindor dorm; James pushed back on the bed. They were finally enjoying some alone time.
As much as Regulus wanted things to progress, they’d never actually discussed that particular subject. They just did what felt natural, so at first, gently slipping his hand under James’ shirt felt natural, until his boyfriend stiffened.
It was only slight, but of course Regulus noticed immediately and pulled back.
“Is this alright?” he asked softly.
James hesitated before answering, “Yeah, of course, love.”
“James, do you want this?”
James’ lips moved as if to respond, yet no sound came, and Regulus began to sit up, his silence being enough.
Before he could fully move away from the bed, however, James caught his hand. “No wait, Reg. I’m sorry, just give me a minute, please. Don’t go.”
The panic in his words and on his face nearly broke Regulus right then and there. “Jamie, I’m not going anywhere. I’m just getting you some water, okay?”
With a nod, James reluctantly let go of him, and when he returned with the glass of water, James had leant against the bed head, with his knees drawn to his chest.
Regulus had suspected for some time that James may have some issues with intimacy. He never talked about it, but when the subject of past partners came up, he avoided it like the plague. So Regulus knew he had to approach this topic with caution.
“Are you alright?” Regulus asked, placing the water on the bedside table and sitting in front of James.
“I’m fine, really. We can go back to…” James trailed off, unable to finish.
“No. You don’t want to.” Regulus said softly but firmly, “Jamie, why do you keep pushing yourself? We don’t ever have to do anything, ever. If that’s not something you want, then I don’t either. I will never push you.”
“Really?” James’ eyes seemed to sparkle, “You’d be okay if we never… you know.”
“Of course, has anyone ever made you feel otherwise?” Regulus asked, not knowing if James would answer or not.
“Sometimes.”
“Did they- did they pressure you?”
James’ silence was answer enough.
“Jamie,” Regulus whispered, moving closer to James, taking his hand.
“It’s- it’s not what it sounds like,” James said, trying to justify it but still tearing up. “We were dating.”
“That doesn’t matter,” Regulus said softly, stroking the back of James’ hand.
“I just wanted to make them happy,” James choked out, tears starting to stream down his face.
Regulus thought he felt his heart physically shatter. “What about your happiness?”
“No one’s ever really cared except the Marauders, and I- I never got those urges or feelings. I thought I was just defective,”
“I do. And you’re not,” Regulus replied gently, holding James’ face. “If you don’t feel those feelings, that’s okay. There’s nothing wrong with you. Don’t ever pressure yourself for me, okay? All I want is you happy and comfortable.”
“Thank you,” James sniffled, “can we not talk about this anymore?”
“We can talk about it when you’re ready, alright?”
James nodded as Regulus positioned himself so James could cuddle up next to him. “Thank you for not leaving me.”
“Never.”

James regretted it as soon as he did it. They’d been fighting, which was rare for them to do, but when it happened, they both got very passionate. So when James raised his arm in order to gesture, he didn’t think much of it, until his boyfriend flinched.
Silence followed as James backed away from Regulus, anger from their argument evaporating immediately.
“Regulus,” James said softly.
“Sorry. I’m sorry,” Regulus stammered, trying to make up for his reaction, but it was too late. James had seen it.
“Reg, I would never hurt you.”
“I know. I know that I’m sorry,” Regulus breathed.
They stood there for a few seconds, James’s heart breaking. He’d never seen him flinch before; he hated that he was the cause.
“Can I step closer to you?”
Regulus nodded, and James inched closer, holding out his hand for Regulus to take, so he knows that he’s safe.
“I will never hurt you,” James affirmed again.
“I know, I’m safe with you, it’s–” Regulus sighed, “It’s just a stupid reflex, I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay, you don’t need to be sorry, love. It’s not stupid, I should’ve been more careful.”
“I don’t like fighting with you,” Regulus said, leaning his head on James’s shoulder as he was engulfed into a hug.
“Me neither,” James replied, kissing Regulus’ head. “Let’s just talk from now on, yeah?”
“Yeah,” Regulus sighed in content.
“I love you baby.”
“I love you too.”

“Alright, Prongs out with it, your legs are gonna bounce themselves off in a second,” Sirius huffed as he slumped down onto the couch across from James.
James was indeed nervous. Sirius was Regulus Black’s prime protector, and what James was asking was no small feat.
“I want to ask Regulus to marry me.”
Silence.
“You want my baby brother’s hand in marriage?” Sirius asked suspiciously.
“Yes,” James affirmed. He didn’t want to seem hesitant about this; he’d never been more sure of anything in his life.
It wasn’t that James thought Sirius would say no, but he knew asking would mean a lot to him and even to Regulus, not that he’d ever admit it. He was a sucker for tradition, after all.
“Huh,” was all Sirius said before he got up and left the room.
James was dumbfounded. Did Sirius really not approve? He’d never been truly against him and Regulus dating, only making sure James knew how to treat him right.
Before he could truly begin to spiral, Sirius re-entered, holding a small black box.
“I assume you haven’t gotten him a ring yet?” Sirius asked as he sat back down.
“No I uh wanted to get your blessing first so I could get your opinion on one,” James said, still confused.
“Well you could give him this.”
Sirius opened the box, showing the most beautiful ring James had ever seen. Silver, engraved with tiny stars all around that sparkled in the light. It was perfect.
“It was our Uncle Alphard’s,” Sirius explained. “It was left to me technically, but Regulus always eyed it. It’s probably the only heirloom either of us ever liked.”
“It’s incredible,” James marveled, taking hold of the box, “but- what about you? Isn’t this something you might want to give Moony someday?”
“Nah, I already know the perfect one to get him. Besides, does that not scream Regulus?” Sirius smirked.
“It really does,” James said, continuing to admire the ring that he could already picture on Regulus’ finger. “So, this means I have your blessing to ask him?”
“I’ve never seen him look at anyone the way he looks at you. He feels safe, and that’s not easy for him. You make each other happy. It was never going to be a no.”
“Thanks Pads,” James smiled, putting the box into his pocket as he stood to leave.
“Just- Sirius started making James pause, “Take care of him, okay. I know you already do, but still.”
“I know, I will.” James promised.
Even though Sirius’ blessing was pretty much a given, it still meant the world to James. For him to trust someone with his brother wasn’t ever easy for him, and yet he’d placed that trust into James.
“You know what this means,” Sirius grinned, “we’ll now be actual brothers!”
“If Reg says yes,” James chuckled.
“Oh, he will, and he’ll cry. Guaranteed.”
Merlin James hopes so.

It started with a game. Since more of James and Regulus’ friends had begun dating—Dorcas and Marlene, Lily and Pandora— their respective friend groups have more or less merged into one, meaning more mass hangouts.
This was the case one such night when the now large group had gathered around for a game of classic truth or drink.
It was fun at first, until the truths became more and more sexual in nature. This didn’t exactly bother James, he didn’t mind others talking of sex as long as he was left out of the equation, which unfortunately didn’t last long.
“Potter!” Barty exclaimed, clearly very drunk already. “What’s your favourite position with our dear Reggie?”
“NO! Prongs, you are not answering that question!” Sirius yelled from across the circle the group had formed. “In fact, there shouldn’t even be an answer since you swore not to defile my baby brother!”
The group snickered at James’ uncomfortable expression, which to them probably looked as if it were due to his boyfriend’s brother staring daggers at him. In part, it was because Sirius was right. James had kept his word because he and Regulus had not done anything beyond kissing, as James had said he didn’t feel those urges. Regulus had never questioned it apart from asking certain boundaries, and whilst James felt insecure at times, the younger boy was always there for him.
Regulus knowing this about him was enough for James; he didn’t need all his friends knowing he lacked what most regular teen boys took for granted, so he drank.
Regulus, clearly sensing James’ shift in mood, waited a few more rounds before calling it a night for them both so as not to be suspicious about the events being related.
They settled in the Gryffindor dorm for the night, casting a silencing charm around James’ bed so they could have peace.
“You’ve been quiet,” Regulus regarded as they got comfortable.
“Just thinking,” said James softly.
“Is it about the game?”
“Kinda.”
They lay in silence for a few minutes, Regulus giving James a chance to talk.
“I just feel broken sometimes,” James whispered, almost as if he didn’t want Regulus to hear.
Regulus rolled over to face him, “What makes you say that?”
“Everyone else…they can talk about sex. It’s not taboo for them. They do it with their partners, they enjoy it, but me?” James sighed, frustrated with himself. “I know that nothing’s wrong with me, I know that. And I know that you love me, I just- I can’t shake the feeling that I’m just…broken.”
Regulus tucked a piece of hair behind James’ ear. He didn’t have the perfect words of comfort for the feelings his boyfriend was experiencing; he knew he just had to be here and make clear that he wasn’t going anywhere.
“I do, love you. I’m glad you know that,” Regulus said in a soft tone that he reserves only for James. “And I think it’s beautiful, the way you love.”
James tilted his head in confusion.
“You look at me and you don’t see my body. You don’t see what you could take or have. Not that that’s what the desire for sex is in a relationship; for some, it is, but you. You see me, for me. I’d take that over any sex-god boyfriend.”
That earned a chuckle from the older boy, which was music to Regulus’ ears.
“I don’t like feeling like this,” he admitted.
“I know,” Regulus sighed, “but it’ll pass, it always will, and I’ll still be here.”
With that, James shuffled so he could tuck his head under Regulus’ chin and curl up against him. The best cure for the swirling thoughts in his head.
They stayed like that well into the next morning until James woke up proud that he had the relationship he did, and when that feeling of brokenness comes back, which it will, he knows he has the most perfect boy to shut them down.

They didn’t fight. In the almost year they’d been together, James and Regulus had never had a serious argument. Until now.
Regulus Black can be an absolute asshole when he wants to be, and usually James doesn’t mind it. In fact, it’s one of the things he finds most endearing about his boyfriend. However, sometimes it was too much.
The younger boy had clearly had a rough day, and James, well, James was the poor sod that asked if he was okay. Now, it wasn’t uncommon for Regulus to take his anger out on James, as he was usually the more positive of the pair and balanced them out nicely.
Today, however, wasn’t one of those days; instead of trying to cheer up the Slytherin, James snapped back. He hadn’t meant to and felt guilty the instant it happened, but Regulus was already halfway back up the hallway before James had a chance to apologise.
Regulus later found him atop the astronomy tower and sat down quietly next to him.
“You got mad at me,” Regulus said, looking out to the grounds.
“Yes,” James sighed, “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have snapped at you like that.”
“You shouldn’t apologise; it was my fault.”
“Still.”
They sat in silence for a couple of minutes before James spoke again, “I can’t always be your punching bag, Regulus.”
The younger boy flinched ever so slightly as if he’d been stung. James never called him his full name; it was always ‘Reg’, ‘baby’, or ‘love.’ This was serious.
“I know,” Regulus looked down seemingly ashamed, “I guess, I mean, you’re always so positive, I forget that you also have harder feelings too.”
James hummed in agreement, “And I know you like to push people away.”
That caused Regulus to start fidgeting with his hands; he knew James was right.
“I’m not going anywhere, Reg. You can stop pushing.”
Regulus nodded and finally met James’ eye, “Forgive me?”
“Always come here,” James said, pulling Regulus into him.
“I really am sorry.”
“I know love.”

On days like these, James Potter was easily able to put on his mask. He spoke just as loudly, laughed just as much but on the inside; everything felt empty. There were only a few people who could tell when James had his mask on: his best friend Sirius and his other best friend Lily.
Sirius knew when James was faking but never pressed him to talk, which James was immensely grateful for. Instead, he’d linger closer and pull James away from big crowds, leading to less performing and more resting.
Lily knew that despite James’s loud nature, on days like these he needed quiet. So instead of studying in the library, she’d keep him company in the Gryffindor common room and use her head girl privileges to scare anyone off who might hinder their quiet time.
James was incredibly grateful for them both, but still no one was able to warm the coldness that filled his body and mind on those days.
That was until, Regulus Black.
They’d been dating for three months, and James hadn’t had a single bad day. He thought maybe they were gone now that he was so happy, but unfortunately, that’s not how the brain works.
When they saw each other for breakfast that morning, Regulus knew immediately.
“Something’s wrong,” Regulus said in his usual placid tone as he approached James.
“Nothing’s wrong, love. I’m fine.” James replied, attempting one of his signature smiles.
Regulus scowled, “You’re lying.”
Before he could question him any further, the bells went off, signalling the beginning of lessons.
“I’m fine, love, I promise!” James called as he was whisked away to class.
Regulus knew better.
Later that day, Regulus went to find the only other person who knew James better.
“Something’s wrong with James.” Regulus said as he cornered Sirius at the end of an empty corridor.
Sirius didn’t deny it. He’d known about Regulus and James for only a few weeks and was clearly still getting used to it. This was the first time they’d ever discussed James without him present.
“Yeah,” Sirius sighed, “he— he gets like this sometimes. Usually, people don’t notice.”
“Well I’m not ‘people’ i’m-“
“His boyfriend.”
They stood in silence for a few seconds, accepting the fact that they both understood James meant a lot to Regulus.
“What do you mean ‘gets like this’?” Regulus asked.
“I mean, he has bad mental health days, but he doesn’t like to talk about it. He acts fine, but he’s not. Not really. Lily and I are the only ones who really know.”
“How do I fix it?”
Regulus knew how pathetic and desperate he must look right now, but he didn’t care. He wanted James to be okay.
“You can’t fix this, Reggie,” Sirius responded in a tone that sounded almost heartbroken.
And that nickname. He hadn’t called him that in years.
“So what do I do?” Regulus asked.
“Be with him. Don’t make him talk or do anything. Just be there.”
Regulus nodded and began to walk away when Sirius called out.
“Reggie!”
Regulus turned to look at his brother.
“You make him happy, that’s all he needs right now, alright. He just needs you.”
“You think I’ll be enough?” Regulus whispered, praying Sirius wouldn’t hear him.
“You’ll always be enough for him.” Sirius said firmly, “And me.”
Before he did something ridiculous like cry, Regulus nodded once more and began making his way to where he knew his boyfriend would be hiding.
He’d made the room give him a cosy cottage, and when Regulus entered, the fireplace was blazing with James curled up on the little couch.
“Hey,” Regulus whispered, sitting down gently next to James as not to startle him.
“I lied to you before,” James mumbled from under his blanket.
“I know.” was all Regulus needed to say, “Come here.”
As James sat up, Regulus gently pulled him into his chest and laid down with him.
They stayed there for what felt like hours, with Regulus stroking James’ hair as he slowly fell asleep against him, but not before a muttered, “Thank you.”
Regulus just kissed the top of his head and let him drift off.

“I’m not denying anything, Pads.”
“Don’t ‘Pads’ me right now,” Sirius spat as he angrily paced the empty common room.
He was angry, and for the first time in his life, that anger was directed at James.
“How long?” Sirius said with a fury he never thought he could direct at his best friend.
“How long, what?” James asked from where he was sitting on the couch, watching Sirius pace.
“How long have you been with him? How long have you been lying to me?”
Sirius stopped his pacing in order to look directly at James, who’d looked down at his hands. “Three months.”
That did it. Sirius threw his hands up and continued his pacing, “Three months! What? You thought I’d just never find out?”
“It’s not that it’s just-“ James paused for a beat, “you two have just started getting close again, okay? He wasn’t ready to throw a spanner in the works.”
“Don’t you tell me what my brother isn’t ready for! You have no idea what he’s been through or what he deals with daily!”
“I know that he’s trans, Sirius.” James lowered his voice as he said that, on the off chance someone was eavesdropping; however, at this hour, it’s unlikely.
Sirius faltered in his step and eyed James, “You- what?”
James nodded, “He told me at the start of everything. I know it wasn’t easy for him, but he did.”
“He’s never been able to tell anyone. Other than me,” Sirius said in a voice of utter bewilderment as he took a seat next to James.
“I know he struggles sometimes, even when he doesn’t want to show it. I know the shit he went through with your parents and what he still goes through every day. I just want to be there for him.”
“As his boyfriend?” Sirius asked sceptically, though with less venom in his voice this time.
“Yes,” James said with no room for hesitation, “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. Truly. I know how protective you are over him. I didn’t want to hurt you, I swear I just- I didn’t want to mess this up with him. I really like him, pads.”
“Do you love him?”
“I think so,” James admitted, probably for the first time, “no, I know so.”
Sirius sighed, looking down at the ground. “We don’t keep secrets from each other, Prongs.”
“I never will again. I promise,” James said firmly.
“Just-“ Sirius hesitated, “Please don’t hurt him, okay? He clearly has a lot of trust in you. He’s my baby brother, I can’t see him hurt anymore. Please?”
“I won’t hurt him. Ever. I swear.” James insisted with that earnest look in his eye.
Sirius believed him. He’s James. If he were to trust anyone with his little brother’s heart, it’d be James. He just never thought it would be.
“Merlin. You and Reggie.” Sirius said, looking up at the roof, attempting to take this all in. “But how? He’s so- him. And you’re so-Prongsie.”
“I know,” James chucked, “it works better than you may think. Believe me.”
Sirius met him with a side-eye, “Just keep the snogging to a minimum around me, alright?”
“I make no promises.”

tw: implied past DV - not detailed (NOT between regulus and james)
Date number four and Regulus is late. James told him to be ready at 6 and he’d pick him up from his flat. Unfortunately, the day got away from him, so now it’s currently 6:15 pm and Regulus is still running around trying to get ready.
By the time he looks somewhat presentable, it’s 6:20 pm, so he rushes down the stairs two at a time and exits the building, barely looking back- half expecting James to have gotten sick of waiting and left.
And yet there he was, with his hands in his pockets, leaning on a limousine, looking as gorgeous as ever. Merlin, why did he have to look like that?
“I’m so sorry, there was so much going on today, so by the time I got home and-“ Regulus’ rambling was cut off by a kiss, which immediately set him at ease.
“Don’t apologise, I’d wait hours for you,” James said with his ever-so-charming grin.
“More importantly, is this a limo?” Regulus asked sceptically.
“Why it is,” James announced, spreading his arms, “only the finest for the only man I’m dating, who’s only dating me!”
Regulus rolled his eyes at the comment, choosing to ignore the grin he couldn’t help appearing on his face. “So you have a penthouse and a limo? What’s next, a private jet?”
“Well, I usually like to save my jet for the fifth date,” James said, opening the door for Regulus.
Regulus couldn’t tell if he was joking or not.
James took them to one of their favourite restaurants, where they ate, talked, and could’ve done so for hours until Regulus saw him.
A few tables behind James, sat his ex-boyfriend.
Regulus felt like he could barely breathe, let alone move, which James noticed immediately. “Hey, are you alright?”
When Regulus didn’t respond, James grew more concerned, “Reg? Love?”
“We need to get out of here,” Regulus said, barely moving his mouth as he hastily began to stand.
At this point, any rational person would’ve started questioning Regulus, but James didn’t. “I’ll get the bill. You wait in the limo. The driver would’ve left one of the doors unlocked.”
When they were both safely in the limo with the driver returning to take them home, Regulus felt like he was finally able to speak.
“It was him.”
“Him?”
Regulus looked at james for beat until he realised, “oh. Oh Reg I’m sorry did- did he see you?”
Regulus shook his head, “no i don’t think so. I don’t think he would’ve done anything but…”
“It’s alright, you didn’t want to be around him. I understand that.”
“I ruined our date,” Regulus said, looking down.
James moved closer, “You didn’t ruin anything, love.”
“But this is what dating me is going to be like, James. I’m gonna have panic attacks and flashbacks and might need to leave places he isn’t even in just because of the memories. I-“ Regulus couldn’t even finish.
This was it, he’d blown whatever this was with James.
“Reg look at me.”
Regulus looked up and was surprised at the expression on James’ face. There wasn’t anger or sadness, not even pity; it was adoration.
“If all of that happens every month, every week or every day, I’ll be there, okay? Because I like you for you, and you’re not defined by what happened. And you deserve so much better.”
“You are better.”
That got one of James Potter’s iconic smirks, “Well, I’d certainly hope so.”
Regulus still had his doubts, but he wanted to try and trust James because if anyone deserved that effort, it’d be him.
“Why don’t you stay at my place tonight? It’s getting late,” Regulus asked nervously. James had never seen his flat before. “It’s not a penthouse, but…”
“I’d love to.”
And with that, Regulus was rewarded with a night full of kisses and cuddles. He could get used to this because this was what it was meant to be like.

prompt: attack
It’d been two weeks since the incident. An Order mission going sideways as Death Eaters had gotten wind of what they were up to and decided to attack. They lost one Order member, with the others escaping with varying degrees of injury.
Since having to call off being a spy for the Order due to his connection with Sirius, Regulus had been in hiding for months, meaning he didn’t find out that James was hurt until hours after the attack.
When Sirius floo-called him to tell him, Regulus didn’t care if Voldemort himself was waiting outside their fidelius-charmed flat; he was going to get to his fiancé.
James and Regulus got engaged at the start of the war - yes, they were young, but it was more a promise that they were both going to make it out of this, and when they did, they would get married. Regulus would be damned if he let James go back on that promise; he cannot leave him.
Now two weeks later, James was recovering, having only broken a few ribs and a concussion, which, considering some of the other injuries, he got off easy. Since he wasn’t able to fight for the Order for a little while, he had joined Regulus in hiding, as being an Order member made him a target.
Regulus liked that it was only the two of them for the foreseeable future, with the occasional visit from Remus as he was their secret keeper (Sirius being too obvious a choice). He enjoyed taking care of James since the older boy had done it for him almost their whole relationship- it was nice to return the favour.
They hardly spoke of anything else other than James’ care; Regulus had barely sat down for longer than three minutes before thinking James needed something and getting up to get it. He needed James to be okay.
James, however, had finally had enough with Regulus being his mother hen, as he got up for the seventh time that day to get James some pain potion. James wrapped a hand around his waist, stopping him.
“Hey, I’m okay, I promise.”
“I know, but more potion can’t hurt,” Regulus said, still distracted with the task of getting it for him.
“Love, sit down.”
Regulus hesitated.
“Please,” James begged with his best puppy dog eyes that he knew his fiancé couldn’t say no to.
“Well, if you’re sure,” Regulus sighed, settling back onto the couch.
James started playing with his hair before he asked, “Talk to me.”
“About what?” Regulus replied somewhat defensively.
“Whatever’s going on in that head of yours.”
“Nothing, I just wanna make sure you get better. You’re always taking care of me, so now it’s my turn,” Regulus shrugged as if this was the most obvious concept in the world to him.
James sighed; he didn’t deserve this boy.
“I appreciate that, love I do, but I know there’s something else going on.”
Regulus looked down at his hands as James continued tucking little curls behind his ear.
“I almost lost you.”
When he finally looked up again, Regulus had tears streaming down his face.
“Oh, Reg,” James said, reaching for the smaller boy and tucking him into his chest.
“I can’t lose you,” Regulus replied, looking up at James. “I wouldn’t survive it, I wouldn’t.”
James just continued to hold him, and he held on for dear life. “Love, you’d be okay.”
“No.” Regulus said, viciously shaking his head, “you can’t leave me. Not you.”
“I’m not going anywhere, love,” James whispered, planting a kiss on the younger boy’s head as he continued to cry.
They sat there for the rest of the night, with the weight of what they almost lost two weeks ago finally settling in, but also the knowledge that they’d always fight to get back to each other.
James was set on marrying this boy.
