“Well, what do you think?” said Lennon, pointing to his face. He’d had an American flag painted on it at one of the booths. “Do you think I could pass for a Yank now?” When he said it, he said it in his Kiwi accent.
Nate couldn’t help but laugh at the scene. “Oh I think you definitely can pass for one of us. No one will be able to tell otherwise.”

Usually, Lilac finds people who went to college and brag about it to be insufferable. Truly, completely insufferable. Few things bother her like being asked where she went to school or the way people’s eyes glaze over when she admits she dropped out. But somehow, she doesn’t believe that he means it in a snobbish way. He’s passionate about what he teaches, she guesses. And it’s not actually that annoying. She gives him a sly look and cocks her head. “You think I’m fierce? Good.”
“Not as long, only a few weeks. I’m sure you can guess what ‘inspired’ the move.”
Manolo laughed at her reply to the quote. “Oh definitely, I can’t think of anyone more fitting for the word.” He grinned, meaning every word of it. He didn’t know her very well but that was one thing he was certain. She had spunk and he was intrigued immensely by it.
Manolo sighed slightly. “I’m sorry you had to come here on those pretenses. I’m supposed to as well but I just haven’t brought myself to open the envelope. Have you met your lucky one yet?”

Jamie frowned, frustrated by his lack of a proper, reasonable explanation for their last encounter. The truth was that he still wasn’t sure what had actually happened to trigger completely different behavior and feelings on his part. He didn’t have an answer for Nate. He probably never would. “I don’t know what happened, I swear. But it won’t happen again.”
Nate sighed, it wasn’t an answer but he didn’t want to spend anymore time being upset about it. “Alright I guess that’s all I can ask. Want to make up over some cold pizza that I have in my room?” He suggested, knowing he still had to tell Jamie about the night he was turned.

“Oh, don’t even get me started on the humidity” said Wren with a groan. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen my daughter’s hair so frizzy in her entire life.” And while Wren knew enough to keep her from looking like a street rat on a typical day, he wasn’t an expert hair stylist. As a result, he’d defaulted to pulling Aspen’s hair back in a ponytail almost every day.
Nate laughed but he could relate deep down. “It definitely is a lot. And everyone who says you get used to it is a freaking liar. This is like hell on earth.” He shook his head. “So how old is your daughter?”

“Stop apologizing.” She grumbles between mouthfuls of pizza, but there’s less of an edge to her words. “Just don’t do it again, or I’ll have to kick your nerdy little ass, Clark Kent.” She says this with exaggerated bravado … as if she isn’t a mere 5'3" in stature. “So you live here too …” Lilac changes the subject, trying to get to the subject that really interests her without revealing the truth of their connection.
Manolo laughed and started to eat some of his pizza. “I have no doubt you would. It’s like that Shakespeare quote ‘Though she be little, she is fierce.’ Sorry I’m an english professor so things like that come to me a lot.”
“Yeah! I moved here about four years ago. I didn’t think I would love it as much as I do here but it’s an absolutely amazing city. How long have you been here?”

“I take back everything I said about this city having nice weather” said Wren, standing in the hotel lobby. He’d just come in from outside and was drenched in sweat. “It is way too hot out.” No place should get to 94 degrees before it was even summer. And why did Americans have to use Fahrenheit anyway? He was still having to convert everything to figure out just how miserable he’d be that day.
Nate couldn’t help but laugh. “I completely agree. I’m used to heat but it’s the humidity that’s a killer.” Nate grew up in the desert so he knew how hot it could get, but the hot and sticky that New Orleans offered was something he wasn’t used to or enjoyed.

“We’re probably going to be stuck here, I can’t ignore you forever.” She means the elevator of course, but the facts remain. They’re stuck in town together and the letter with his name on it won’t let her ignore him forever, as much as she’d like to.
She’s disinterested in marriage overall and particularly (aggressively) disinterested in an arranged one to an asshole. But she’s also not about to risk having the council come down on her ass for this.
Besides, he was capable of being normal (even charming) before. Perhaps it was just a bad day. And yet … does she want someone that deranged near the kids?
It’s too much to think through right now, with a long workday behind her and an even longer night of chores ahead of her.
So Lilac rolls her eyes at the krypton joke and extends the pizza box, waiting for him to take a slice. “No Bizzaro today then?” She quips because the kids have watched every single episode of the animated Justice League television show and she can’t resist making the joke about Superman’s evil counterpart.
"I mean I certainly wouldn’t blame you if you tried. I was a major asshole to you and I really am sorry for that.” Manolo tried apologizing again, hoping that she would see how sincere he really was.
Manolo wasn’t even sure why he was trying so hard with this woman. Maybe it was the fact that he didn’t know who his pair was. He felt like if he couldn’t even make it work with this stranger, how was he going to make it work with someone he was forced to be together?
He was relieved when she offered pizza and he gladly took a slice. “Oh no Bizzaro, luckily I don’t see him ever making an appearance again.” Manolo laughed, gladly to play along the joke again.

Nikolai sat in the lobby, flipping through his phone. He was looking up local shops. Turning to the person next to him, he said “Which of these is better for saying I’m sorry for being an asshole: flowers or chocolates? Or should I go all out and buy some jewelry?”
Manolo couldn’t help but laugh at the irony. “I’m in the same boat and I have no clue. How well do you know the person you were an asshole too? That’s the big question.” Manolo put down the book he was reading to give his full attention to him. “See I was an asshole to this person I barely even know but I just feel terrible about it. So if I bought her any of those things I would just look like a creep. But I just want to make it up somehow.”

“Heard or sought them out, on the edge of your seat despite being a grown man?” Morgan jokes before adding (good-naturedly), “At least you’re honest about using us. Save the flattery though. All buttering-up should be directed at my popcorn, thanks.”
"Okay maybe sought them out, but only because I needed to know if I should get my hopes up or not. And you’re telling me you aren’t excited for this? The first one is a masterpiece!” Nate joked. “Well I mean it though, you and Faye are wonderful. Even if I wasn’t excited about this movie I would still want to go if the little lady asked.”

“Listen I heard good reviews for it. Plus I needed a child so I’m not a grown man watching Incredibles 2. So I’m sorry but since you and Faye are my favorite family that means you have to see it with me.”

She can barely resist the smell of pizza and cinnamon sticks wafting through the boxes, but somehow Lilac ignores the urge to open one up and eat a slice on the go. She’s never liked eating before the kids do, anyway, even though she knows for a fact that there’s always enough to go around nowadays. She’s balancing the boxes plus the bottle of soft drink when the elevator she’s in lurches, then stops. “Crap.”
Lilac pushes the emergency button with her free hand and sits down cross-legged on the elevator floor. “Well, I’m hungry.” She announces to the other person in the elevator and opens up a box. “Want a slice? We’ll probably be here a while.”
It was an awkward elevator ride, trying to avoid eye contact with the woman Manolo has been starting to call Lois Lane for lack of a better name. They had less than pleasant past couple of meetings and he felt like the world was against him as soon as the elevator stopped working. He didn’t want to make things worse between them so he awkwardly stayed in his unspoken corner of the elevator.
Manolo laughed slightly when she sat down with her pizza and offered him some. “Are you sure you don’t mind? I was just going to try to give you as much space as needed.” He sat down on the floor across from her. “I’m sorry my krypton powers seem to have escaped me, I could have gotten us out of here.” Manolo tried to offer up the joke as an olive branch.

Sitting in the Witch’s Brew in a relatively dark corner, Lilith sipped her whiskey as she glanced around at the patrons of the bar, wondering just how many of them found themselves in the same predicament as her. Well, what better way to find out than to ask? At the worst, she’d get turned down. At best, she might make a new friend. Ordering a second glass of whiskey, the petite brunette made her way over to another lone individual, holding out the second glass as an offering. “If you don’t like whiskey, I can get you something different, but I thought maybe you could use some company?”
Manolo wasn’t much of a drinker but he was trying to get out a bit more, having not met his pair yet. So he decided that maybe just getting out and meeting new people would be good for him. However, it was just baby steps because he found himself sitting alone in a booth at the bar. He was surprised when someone slid in across from him. “Oh well thank you! Whiskey is fine. And sure I would love some company. How are you?”

"This book is a farce!“ The voice echoed through the bookstore – as a thunder and a storm which wouldn’t give away. Her voice carried through books and the visible dust flowing in the air, until it reached the clerk, who, as usual, only replied with a tired soft sigh. From her position, deep within the maze of shelves, Freyja could not see the poor man – but she could guess he was rubbing his temple, the exhaustion visible in his eyes. The dim yellow lights illuminating the store only brought a warm feeling to her chest, but Freyja couldn’t care less. She had spent nearly her entire morning in this dusty place, searching for an accurate book about herself. She found plenty – but none were quite corrected. It frustrated her to no end.
Some completely ignored her victories, others never mentioned her orgies once. Some dared to imply she had an intimate relationship with Anastasia – And others made comments about her daughter. It was all a mess, and yet Freyja could stop her actions. She piled them, each and every one she could find, holding it all as she took slow steps through the store. Still, she couldn’t stop herself from bumping into someone, and she grunted, barely holding her ground and precious books. "Oh dear,” she let out, trying to balance her books. “I am so sorry, darling. Did I step on your foot? Are you still even there? – I can’t see behind all these books.” The kindness was unfamiliar for the queen, but she couldn’t find a reason to be rude. Not now.

Nate was spending his time in the bookstore. Luke mentioned being very old and having a queen for a mother so he thought that finding a book about either of them might give Nate some more information on who he was going to marry. Luckily he found one book left about her so he was about ready to check out when he almost bumped into someone carrying a whole mess of books.
“Oh no don’t you worry I’m okay!” He quickly tried to reassure her. “Do you need help with your books ma’am? I’m more than happy to carry some if you would like.” He offered, wanting to be as gentlemanly as possible like he was raised.

He didn’t know if Nate would come to his aid after their last encounter, something that still made Jamie blush when he thought of how petulant and inappropriate he’d been with the man he’d hoped to consider a friend. Nate was apparently the forgiving kind because he did come to his rescue, pulling Jamie away. He winced though when Nate brought up the last time they’d seen each other. “I really am sorry about that. I wasn’t myself.”
"Normally not feeling yourself is being short with someone not trying to get them into bed.” He sighed, not wanting to make Jamie feel more uncomfortable. Even if he wasn’t the happiest with him, Nate still felt guilty for the guy. “Listen, are you alright though? Are you more yourself now?”

“You are unbelievable.” Lilac rolled her eyes. As she was about to swipe the card, she looked at it with some curiosity. The name on it was all too familiar. Manolo Madrigal, like her letter. Just her fucking luck. She stared at it for a second, recovering with, “Can I see ID?” Maybe he’d stolen the wallet, Lilac hoped.
Manolo laughed a little to himself, he knew the more he talked the more he sounded ridiculous but he hoped that some day she could see the humor in all of this. “Oh sure!” He pulled out his wallet again to hand her his ID. He thought maybe it was just protocol or that even she was giving him a bit of a hard time considering everything he did last time. “Is everything okay though? I don’t know if I have any other proof, I can go home and get a bill if you want me to? That has my name on it as well.”

“So far I think you’re doing a pretty good job so I wouldn’t be worrying about that.” Luke’s smile was bright, there was nothing that could make it drop at that moment. “Twice. Once when I was human, and again about five hundred years ago. Both amazing women, both a part of my past.”
"Well good, I’m actually really glad to hear that. I don’t always do well in first impressions.” Nate joked but was pleased to know that Luke thought it was going as well as he did. He nodded again when he talked about his past. “Well good for you, I’d love to hear more about them. I’ve had serious relationships before but nothing close to marriage though. But I’ve always wanted to.”

“I think I’m a little old to buy the evil twin excuse.” Lilac ignored his apologies, stepping away to bring him his drink and a receipt. She stood by, waiting for him to make good on his promise to pay up this time instead of making her fight him on this again.
“I mean I do have a twin brother, but I’m not blaming him for this. It’s just something that was hard to explain and I’m sorry.” What would he even tell her? That he switched bodies with himself in another universe who was much meaner to those around him? Manolo knew that wouldn’t fly at all with her, not that he could blame her. He had his card ready when she stepped away. Playing around with it nervously until she returned. “Here’s my card. You can put it on there!”
