A Farewell Interview with Marvel's Jeanine Schaefer

Last month comics readers who value female characters, creators and readers lost one of the most vocal and productive voices within the big two corporate comics with the departure of Jeanine Schaefer from Marvel. Schaefer started her career at DC Comics but soon moved to Marvel where she spent nine years in variety of increasingly important editorial positions. During her time at Marvel Schaefer became a one of the most visible non-creator voices for women in comics. But she wasn’t just a voice; she also drove initiatives such as Girl Comics, a series devoted to showcasing female creators. She also served as the host of the Women of Marvel panels at conventions that provided a conduit to female comic readers while showcasing Marvel’s female editorial team and creators.

For anyone who is a fan of female characters and believes that bringing female readers into comics is positive or just enjoys good comics, Schaefer stepping away is a loss. Schaefer departed Marvel to move to the West Coast to join her husband Mark Doyle who heads up the Bat-books at DC Comics.  I chatted with Schaefer via email about her decision to leave Marvel, her time at the publisher and how the market for female comics and creators has changed.

Day 4 – Actor appreciation: Ming-na Wen (Agent May)

I just think her portrayal of Agent May is amazing. She does a good job of coming across as stoic and her non-verbal acting and facial expressions are so good, but she also shows her emotions and lets us know that there is more to her than the stoic warrior. Also, I love that Ming-na Wen does all her own stunts and fighting. I can’t wait to see more of her in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Top Ten Black Actresses Who Can Play A Younger Storm

I love Storm and was mostly exposed to the character through the many X-Men animated television shows that populated my young life. Last week, during a Yahoo Q&A, X-Men: Apocalypse writer Simon Kinberg verified that Halle Berry, James Marsden, and Famke Janssen will not be reprising their roles in the upcoming X film if their characters were to be written in.

“If we included some of the original X-Men, like Storm, Jean, Scott, and others, yeah we would have to recast them, because Apocalypse takes place a good twenty years before “X1,” which now insanely was fifteen years ago.” – Simon Kinberg, Yahoo

So who are my choices for the African Queen, Street Thief, Leader of the X-Men and general mutant bad ass? Well, check out my choices below.

10. Lyndie Greenwood

She plays the kick ass Jenny Mills in Sleepy Hollow and would make a great 80s Storm. She’d definitely bring the edgier aspects of the character to life.

It’s not every day you get asked for a cover a friday night for a monday morning.  Especially when you’re already running after 4 deadlines.

I consider it as a great achievement to be trusted to that extent and I am very proud to be able to paint all these babies on due times.

I think that X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past have shown how very little Fox cares about actual X-Men canon. Ant-man is starring Hope Van Dyne, previously a minor villain from MC2 as a female lead with like less than 10 appearances, of all things. So pretty much any woman that at least has tenuous links to the character is up for grabs in the film, and that woman may ultimately only have her name in common with her comic counterpart. All that really matters is if Fox has rights to the character. As it stands, there are a lot of women to choose from since I'm assuming she's a love interest: Carmelita, Outlaw, Copycat, Mercedes Wilson, Siryn, Betty, Death, Shiklah, and many more.

Meet the women up for the female lead in the upcoming Deadpool film. Morena Baccarin, Taylor Schilling, Crystal Reed and Rebecca Rittenhouse, Sarah Greene and Jessica De Gouw. Who these women could possibly play is under wraps for now. Shiklah? Domino? Death? Lady Deadpool? Who knows!
