Emily Wettstein is a 25-year-old designer living in Brooklyn, NY who built this planter table as part of her application to grad school for architecture. The table is made from reclaimed walnut and steel with a removable planter that can hold a variety of plants, in this case wheat grass (very cat friendly!)

Two years ago I was living on an old avocado orchard/ranch that is the headquarters for an environmental restoration group (Growing Solutions). The ranch is up at the end of Winchester Canyon in the foothills on the Gaviota Coast. Nights were inky black and beautiful— moonlight or starlight and, to the south, one of the coastal oil rigs lit up on a little sliver of ocean. I set up my boat building shop in the barn/packing shed, and had a room in a double-wide for ranch workers.

Avocados grew and ripened within easy reach of my bedroom window.

These ladles were carved from logs cut from Avocado trees in the deep, deep pruning that the big, old trees receive from time to time. The ladle form is carved from a crook or crotch for maximum strength. No grinders or sanders— just a chisel, bent-tip knife, and card scrapers. Old school carving.

I think my favorite thing about these ladles is that while they are being used in my clients’ kitchens, the trees still stand out there, looking down the valley to the ocean and some of my favorite surf breaks. They still grow fruit and send it to market.
