A few weeks back I took part in installation of an El Anatsui piece, "Bukpa Layout" (2012), in the lobby of the Bloomberg building on 57th and Lexington. The wall is limestone so a custom cut of plywood was mounted to the wall by a separate team of masons and carpenters. The board had to be trimmed during installation (image 3) so it would not show at the edges. Normally we install these pieces directly onto the walls so have never had conform to a template. We worked with the owner of the piece to shape it based on his specifications for about two hours. These works have no installation instructions so each time they are installed the look different. We often have to improvise as we are working. This piece, given the space constraints was the most challenging I have worked on. The piece attracted a lot of gawkers while we were working. It can now be seen by the public from the lobby on Lexington Ave.
