Bowie was always something other-worldly. A rock star in appearance and a performer on stage, he and his alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, embraced androgyny and refused to be whatever it was or is that society considers normal.

In collaboration with @farfetch, LACMA enlisted 19 designers to create exclusive one-off designs inspired by works from our permanent collection for the Wear LACMA: 50th Anniversary Edition.

The designers shared the art inspiration behind their individual pieces and their thoughts on this exciting initiative:

Jennifer Meyer

‘I’m a huge fan of Ed Ruscha — both as a person and as an artist — and I also consider myself a California girl through and through. Ruscha’s Made in California has always been a personal favourite of mine. I love that the print is monochromatic, simple and bold. My first Wear LACMA piece is a necklace in my signature font using gold and diamonds, for California natives like myself to wear. I also wanted to design another that simply said “California” because, let’s be honest, who doesn’t love California!’

Esquivel  

‘I continue to be inspired by The Indian Woman with Marigold by Felipe Santiago Gutiérrez, which I discovered while working on the previous project with LACMA. I designed an ankle boot in soft lavender to capture the humble spirit of the woman admiring a bouquet of beautiful yellow flowers. For the second piece, I was inspired by the Manioc Flour Bowl from Brazil in the early 18th century. The bowl is opulent yet utilitarian. I created a heeled ankle boot in luxurious gold leather that is very wearable and practical for everyday life.’

Anita Ko

‘I was inspired by the Duke Kahanamoku’s Redwood Surfboard, circa the Twenties. When I saw it I thought it was so cool and amazing, I just loved the weight and shape of the board, and thought it was a perfect piece of art. Growing up in Los Angeles surfing was always a part of my culture, so I wanted to combine my luxury aesthetic with surfing.’ 

Juan Carlos Obando  

‘I was extremely interested in using a photograph of the Museum when it first opened — an image that displayed the architecture as well as the visitor. Being exposed to the photography archive was an incredible experience and enabled me to choose a visual piece from the museum’s history and apply it to a representative of California’s fashion, The Leisure Poolside Caftan.’
