In my eyeliner everyday era / love the number on the scale era / show off my tattoos and take selfies every day era / nails never not on fleek era / look in the mirror and call myself a snack era / prioritize my mental health era / bathe in the morning sunshine era / no I can't talk right now era / say whatever I want and not give a damn about your opinion era / noise-cancel the entire world era / sorry that's not my job era / actually not sorry era / see you later but only if I want to era / I deserve better and it's about time I get it era /
Something I was lucky enough to learn pretty early in life is that while we all live in the same world, we also each live in our own, with very different backgrounds and values. Mine didn't have an ideal family or a lot of money, so I had to show up for myself from early on. I quickly learned that things that might be really important to you can be meaningless to someone else, and not everyone will always understand where you're coming from. That's alright. They're living by their own standards just as you are living by yours, and not all hearts are meant to intersect. But that shouldn't rattle you. Your truth has just as much right to exist as anyone's, and the right people will see that.
Selflove means standing in front of a mirror and liking what you see, including the stretch marks and orange peel skin. Selflove means long showers and warm towels, and candles smelling of lavender. It means walking with your chest out and head held high, because you deserve to be here as much as anyone else. It means adoring yourself like a lover. It means knowing what you need, and taking it without feeling guilty. Accepting the past and aiming for the future. Embracing change and new beginnings. Working with rather than against yourself. Selflove means trusting your abilities. It's being your own best friend. It's knowing you're enough just by being here, and that you will find your way.
When you allow yourself space, you develop your intuition. Other people are there to help orient yourself, but never to dictate your behavior. Sit down more often, take a deep breath and ask yourself what you want. How do you feel about this? How do you want to approach the situation? What version of yourself do you want to be today? Chances are you already know the answers to those questions, you just didn't think to ask.
