Day 10: Found in the bowels of our housemates' cellar. An 18 year old sparkling Shiraz, from the Coonawarra region of South Australia, produced by Peter Rumball Wines. I'm not a fan of red sparklings, yet it is an obiqitous staple found in the Australian wine identity and one I have to embrace. And yet, upon tasting this wine, we was pleasantly surprised by this aged sparkling, and let me tell you, both my housemate and I was suspicious and had a backups in the wings. Yes, it shows heaps of tertiary character; port and nuttiness in spades. The palate equally so and with a fine mousse for a surprising elegance. The tannins are so integrated, they seemlessly blend with the flavours adding to the rich texture. What a wonderful find and wine to have at the end of my first day of my new job. Day 9: Cederberg, Bukettraube 2019, South Africa. Imported to Australia by @bravenewworld.wine Made by Dawid Nieuwoudt, a family man, a great winemaker i respect deeply and one with a passion for South African wines and the Cederberg. The wibe is one of my partners' favourites, sonof course we were so happy to find it here in Australia. The wine is an explosion of aromas like citrus, white flowers, tropical fruits and apricots. The plate is light, bright, a tad sweet, yet balanced with a good amount of acidity. Day 8: Wolff Blass, Malbec, 2012 from the Langhorne Creek region in South Australia. This wine is 8 years old, yet it is still so young and vibrant. Inky black colour with a purple halo in the glass. The aromatics develop in the glass going from dark fruits, liquorice, cola, Cassis and notes of spices and oak. The palate is tight and bright still with supple, soft and fine tannins. Dark fruit and savoury notes integrated beautifully with the oak and acidity showing that it will most definitely still age very well for the next 10 years. Day 7: Tonight we are having a 2020 Clare Valley Riesling. Yes, it's very young, so I had it decanted for about 2 hours before enjoying. Decanting whites is great as it helps release aromatics and blow off some sulfur, especially when they're young. Aromas of lemon sherbet, hard boiled candy, lemongrass and hints of white florals. The palate is still shy, but shows promiseing notes of yellow fruits, lemons and limes. The acid is medium plus and has a long and crisp lingering finish. Definitely needs time in the bottle, 1-2 years and it will be a cracker! Day 6: Rolf Binder, Eden Valley, Montepulciano, 2018 A variety best known from the Italian region of Abruzzo. This wine is still young and vibrant. Aromas of perfume, red berries, liquorice and a slight meatiness. The palate is dense and delicious, dark fruit with gripping and tight tannins. Eden Valley is well known for producing wines that are age worthy and this one is for sure. Day 5: Discovery Road Graciano Rosé, Barossa, produced by Gibson Wines. A beautiful blush pink colour, strawberries&cream, raspberries and slight spicy notes. The palate is clean, crisp and refreshing, yet also has hints of savoury notes. And you might wonder why I'm taking this picture by candlelight? Day 4: Yes, the wine and winemaker is just as quirky as this wine. It is abundant in aromas of oranges, elderflower, roses and Turkish delight. The palate is dry, clean, crisp and notes of lemon and lime hard boiled candy lingers. Although the wine is naturally made, unfiltered don't be put off by the murkiness, it adds to the lovely texture of this wine and rounds it out beautifully, without it this wine would not be balanced.
