You know what really fucks over autistic kids? People always accusing them of being rude or having ‘a tone’ without explaining how what they said might be hurtful. Because it makes you grow up anxious in every social exchange, especially if you’re disagreeing with somebody. It could be the most calm exchange of views between friends, but every moment you’re overanalysing every little thing that comes out if your mouth.
Whenever the kids do this, we explain why it can be interpreted in a way they don’t mean, be it body language or tone of voice or behavior. Oh hey guess what, that works.
I just did interview prep with a young woman who has Asperger's and this was her experience at her last job. It is so unfair and just sets people up for failure.
I have her some scripts and examples on tone and body language and how to "sound conversational". I hope she gets the job!
Bottom line though, you need to be able to explain why you are reacting negatively to someone or leave them alone.
