Creating & experimenting

Using the game "minecraft" I experimented by forming pixelised characters or my own character to help me visualise my final piece. I started to experiment and create small characters using blocks within the game giving the character a pixelised look as they were square. I could use this as a grid when creating my final piece as each sticky note is also square. I found this very affective as it helped me visual my final piece and how I wanted it to look. I also booked photoshop workshops so I can render normal images and recreate them in a pixelated style. I can also add the grid lines to allow me to count each square which will help me when putting my final piece together. I am also thinking about how I want my final piece to look, whether it being directly made onto the wall/gallery space or wether I should create it on a board that could be stuck onto the wall.

More ideas and Artist research I also looked into clothing, such as placing multiples of post it notes together and attaching them in a way to for clothes such as dresses or shirts. The piece of work that inspired this idea was the “widow dress maker pin dress” by Susie MacMurray. How she has placed each pin directly next to each other almost giving it a soft like look such as feathers from a distance. I looked at this as I thought of using post it notes in the same way, sticking them closely together to make wearable pieces. http://www.susie-macmurray.co.uk

I borrowed characters from the game "PAC man" and drew them out in a pixelated format. This is a idea I plan to use as a final piece using these characters as an aspect. The pixelated characters in this game are going to be made using my post it notes stuck onto the wall. This is just an idea, I want my finial piece to have more characters and maybe be 3 dimensionally made.

This is a starting idea where I am taking old pixelated games and drawing them in a pixelated format. I used grid lined paper as it has the squares which replicate the outline/ design of post it notes. This will allow me to transfer this into my final piece as the squares and grid lines would allow me how much post it notes I need for each character.

Artist research; Eric Daigh Eric Daigh is a American artist who is most known for his push pin mosaic creations. I like how his work requires visual proximity and using the push pins closely together creating a almost photo like image from distances. Using this idea of sticking the post it notes closely together I can create an pixelised image. I also like how the push pins are colours but fitting them closely together almost gets that skin tone colour and effect in his work. http://daigh.com/about/

This image and those with similar ideas led me to use sticky notes as my foundational material. The way an ordinary Rubik's cubes are taken and moved in a certain way to achieve the desired colours needed to create something much bigger and of more meaning

Formative feedback

After explaining my idea of using post it notes as a form of re creating pixelised games I got positive feedback from both the group and Steve; module teacher. People suggested I should experiment with different characters which gave me a variety of ideas to create either a 2 dimensional or 3 dimensional object/piece.

This is the gallery space where our final pieces will be displayed at the end of the module. I like the space as there is quite a lot and there are barriers between which also gave people Ideas of how to use the space effectively & efficiently.

Experimenting & creating I started placing sticky notes in a pattern like structure to see what I could create. This was just to get me thinking about what I'd like to make and how I'd like to transform a regular post it note to something that has more meaning and is visually appealing. As each post it note is square, placing them together I got a sense of the patterns creating what looked like pixels from a distance. I like the ideas of pixelated imagery so researched more into that. This is where I started creating "Pacman", as it is a pixelised game and using the post it notes allowed it to still have that same visual aspect. However, I noticed that each post it note is slightly big so when put together they take up quite a lot of space. I had to think about this as the gallery space is limiting due to other students work.

Artist research; Geoffroy Amelot Geoffroy Amelot is artist that recreates paintings by the likes of Leonardo de Vinci, Vincent Van gohh and Michelangelo using photoshop to make a Lego break effect. The different colours of tiles have marked out shapes of objects and figures in the artworks. His technique creates optical illusions, which he says are "easier to identify if you take a step back and squint". I really like the look of his work and I am heading toward the direction of taking a normal image and recreating it on photoshop into a pixelated format.

Looking at pixelated games

Looking back at how first games were created, they were all created in a pixelated format. Such as arcade games and the first ever Nintendo. Even now the game "Minecraft" adapted the style of games back from the 80's where they have adapted the style of a blocky format also similar to the pixel format. It creates a 3D feel but also giving it a dated style. Minecraft was inspired by the game "Terrarria" which borrows features from the 80's style games and re-invents them in a way that portrays the game in both 3D and pixelated. Using these components, I persevere to create a wall or stop motion video piece which both reflects the previous art style but at the same time creates something that can be perceived in a modern view.

Post it notes. Sticky notes also known as Post-itnotes or are small pieces of paper that feature a light adhesive on the back. The adhesive allows the notes to be attached to a wide variety of documents and surfaces and removed and reattached multiple times. They allow you to keep notes/ small information and sticking it where it can be seen or helps with reminding you about tasks or stuff needed to be done. Post-it notes started out as three-inch squares that were canary yellow in color. Today, sticky notes can be found in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and colors.

Roger Hiorns These sand like substances created a sense of confusion as to why they were placed in the centre of the room. The ash like substance also shows the comparison between life and death throughout Rogers work. His use of technical power and brain power portrayed through his old x-ray machine and engines; anxiety of flying. The decommissioned x-ray machine also links into the whole "journey and path/ life and death" feel Roger hiorn created. The freezer which is parallel to life and death also has the same feel. The way it made you feel anxious to put ur hand into the hole as if something would happen but it was just to get you thinking, just like most of Hiorns work.

"The Object is to transform"

This is my final module to my first year and I am very excited to be making and creating work by using an material that can be bought at a pound shop and "transforming" it into something much more.

Evaluation

Throughout this whole module I have enjoyed working creativity and practically in a group 8. I found the whole process to be enjoyable, working in workshops and getting to the people in group 8. I think that using the different textures, colours and layers we have effectively "Displaced" buildings by removing and isolating them from their surroundings. Our group all wanted to create a interactive book consisting of layers by adding textures and sections of buildings. Using the different textures, different thickness of paper and tracing paper helped achieve displacement within the book where we all individually cut our sections from it. Each section is linked together by colour.

Final book Photographed above is our final books front cover and my edited and cut out sections of the book. I am overall pleased with our outcome as everyone's pages work really well allowing the book to flow easily between each page. The book was printed using a process called Ryzograph; printing with layers.

Cutting into the books Our collection date got pushed back to Thursday at 2 which gave us little but enough time. Lauren collected the booked and realised the pages had been slightly changed. We all decided to unbind each book, this also allowed us to re do any pages if we weren't happy as we had 10 copies. I collected my pages and started cutting into the windows. I also traced the building itself and another layer of our book, to be place after the building but before a textured layer. Being worried about time I tried my best to cut smoothly using a scalpel and overall really like the outcome of each of my pages. They all fit and complement each other efficiently.
