ok. so. you don't need to be a multimillion dollar corporation to profit off of queer kids, anyone can profit off of queer kids if they want to. they just need to target their material towards them, which is what i partially believe tgs is doing. and i am fully aware sage has a career outside of tgs and this is their passion project, which is amazing for them to get it out to the world. i'm just saying i think with all the experience they've had, they could have written it better. the pacing is weird, and the problems feel tensionless since there's never any real long lasting consequences (because plot armor. jekyll can do no wrong and get in no trouble since he's the main marketable character). and also? tgs is not a good way to introduce them to jekyll and hyde. the story doesn't include utterson, implies jekyll and hyde are two separate people, includes all these different side characters, and has edward hyde's "inciting incident" be "burning an evil, corrupt man, not even to death". not to say that writing your adaptation this way is bad. there's plenty that do it right. but when they see the original book, they are not going to enjoy it because they read an lgbtq story based off of jekyll and hyde. "where's jekyll and lanyon's relationship? why is jekyll so old? who is this random utterson guy and why does he act like lanyon?? why is hyde so off-putting and short, where's my marketable skrunkly? WHY DID HYDE BEAT THAT MAN TO DEATH." i feel like showing someone a glamorized version of a negative historical event (and one not written well) would make them think it's nice and then be horrified when they learn about the real thing in a history class. jekyll and hyde was a tragedy. tgs is a silly little story where nothing bad happens to anyone ever and it's a pillar of the entire jekyll and hyde fandom. i don't hate you anon. i don't hate tgs. i just think it's not really "jekyll and hyde" media with how entirely different the story is from the original. as i said before, slapping the names on these random characters doesn't just make it jekyll and hyde. there's so much deviation from the original book that makes it stand out for the wrong reasons. it exists, as i believe, to draw in young queer people as it has 1) heavy lgbtq themes 2) gothic literature 3) colorful, youthful characters and 4) cute merchandise. i hate the system of it all, not the story itself. tgs is just mid. i'm not saying it's terrible and that sage is a horrible person for writing it, i don't believe that at all. it's just...really mid. and it pisses me off sometimes. but it's still jekyll and hyde media. i'm a big fan of the mirror/shadow thing and the art is cute. i enjoy how they present the characters and make them feel real. i like ash baby hyde, that was really funny. i don't hate tgs how it is currently. i just don't like the execution of it and how mainstream it is. thank you for your time.
i'm sorry mod for writing so much. i don't want to come off as disrespectful or rude to you or anyone else. i don't hate the other anon and i am not writing this out of spite, i just want them to understand my perspective. if you don't answer this ask since you don't want this to become a whole thing, i completely understand. but from now on, in terms of this debacle, i am done. i won't bother your inbox with things like this again.
~ "Here then, as I lay down the pen and proceed to seal up my confession, I bring the life of that unhappy Henry Jekyll to an end." ~
(Don't worry about writing a lot, never has been a problem, never will be. I might just take a bit longer to publish your ask if anything. In general I just want y'all to discuss your points without being aggressive to or provoking one another on purpose. This blog is here just so you all can write about whatever you want to write about related to Jekyll and Hyde media, just follow the guidelines when you do. I don't want this to become a whole thing because there is someone putting in effort behind the work of the comic adaptation and if any of you want to discuss points then there should be rules to follow as you would without anon or off the internet, and to have good, productive (not necessarily, but still) discussions you shouldn't purposefully go out and provoke or attack someone with an opinion different to yours just to win. None of you did that, I just want to avoid that happening. If you do that, I will just not publish the ask. You all can make another blog of this type if you want to do that because I'm not doing it)
