Rupea Citadel in Transylvania, Romania

If you're looking for a concentrated dose of human history when visiting Romania's Transylvania region, head to Rupea Citadel. The site, crowning a high basalt hill, is said to have been inhabited since the Paleolithic period.

Through the ages, defensive forts were built here - including one captured by the Romans - and each eventually fell into ruins. By the 1990s, structures spanning thousands of years of history were virtually abandoned. A restoration project brought the citadel back to life, and re-opened the site to visitors in 2013. Towers were raised, courtyards rebuilt and the citadel's massive walls once again spiral the green hill.
