Week 14: Globalization

   Different cultures are mixing all around the world. In places all around the world there is not just one culture present, it is often a mixture of different cultures. American products are found all over the world, but other countries' products can also be found in America. Most countries aren't isolated and when people move to different countries, they can still find little pieces of their culture in their new homes. Latinos who have move to America can enjoy the reminder of their old country through produce trucks that drive through neighborhoods providing fresh produce and sweet treats. These trucks are a Latino product, but are now found in areas like America.

Week 13: Governments in Developing Countries

    When Britain and other colonial powers stepped away from their colonies, the colonies had to hold a brand new government with no experience. Their new governments were weak and ineffective. Even today, parts of Africa struggle with corrupt ineffective governments. In South Africa, they don't have country wide running water and electricity despite promises made by the government. Their elections are also fraught with danger and corruption. The government was not effective then and it is not very effective now.

Week 12: Feminism

    With the introduction of Communism in Russia, feminism was introduced as well. And it wasn't only Russia, all the Communist countries advocated forms of women liberation. However, even today women and men don't have complete equality. The most talked about feminist issue today is the wage gap between men and women which is around twenty two cents or more. Obama has acted on this issue by creating two directives aimed at making sure federal contractors pay women the same as men.

Week 11: Government Interference in Economy

     When the Great Depression the economy was devastated and many people went without jobs and homes. To help the economy and the jobless citizens, the US government created a bunch of programs to provide jobs. They also created a minimum wage, a topic that's still hot today. States everywhere are raising the minimum wage from $8 to provide a more realistic living wage. Seattle proposes a $15 minimum wage. Since the Great Depression, the government has had a greater role in helping the economy and people with jobs.

Week 9: Drugs

   In the late 18th century China began struggling with the drug Opium. Opium is highly addictive and created millions of addicts. Addiction to drugs is definitely still a current problem. Problems with drug addiction are everywhere and most recently heroin use and overdose have been on the rise in Staten Island. The article is calling it an epidemic and many young people are dying from overdosing on the heroin. The type of drug may have changed from China's old drug of choice, but the problem of addiction still stays the same.

Week 8: Interference

   Europe conquered many colonies and asserted their influence and imperial powers on many foreign countries. Even today countries still interfere in other countries' affairs. Britain took over India and molded the country to fit the picture they wanted. Today, Ukraine elections are coming up and Russia and Western powers are vying for influence and the power to shape things over there. The larger countries feel obligated to interfere with other foreign countries.

Week 7: Machinery at Work

   With the Industrial Revolution, new technology was introduced and machinery became a big part of most jobs, especially in factories. As technologies became more advanced instead of the machinery only helping the humans get the job done, it began replacing them. The Industrial Revolution started a industry that overtime replaced human beings in favor for machinery. Toyota is now reversing this and giving people the jobs over robots. Factory jobs have been very commonplace since the revolution and Toyota is challenging that trend.

Week 6: The common man during revolution

    In the 1800s most of Latin America rebelled and overthrew the European powers. However, these revolutions were mostly conducted by the local elite and did not really improve conditions for the lower class. It is the same currently in Ukraine. Fights are breaking out allover because of Russia’s recent actions, yet the the common Ukrainians including the farmers want nothing to do with any of it. They aren’t concerned about politics and just want the fighting and the extra hardships brought on by the fighting to stop. It was the same for the lower class citizens during the American revolutions.

Week 5: Science vs Religion

    The Scientific Revolution appeared in the mid 16th century. It brought a whole new way of thinking that focused on logic and science rather than faith and god. Even today the topic of religion vs science is argued. Recently Billy Nye and Ken Ham debated evolution vs creationism. The Scientific Revolution started the trend of pitting religion against science which still goes on today.
