Back from the dead~
The Baddies Photoshop CS6 This was a paid commission, to be used as a tabletop resource. This post will be updated with the product they’re placed in, but for now I’ll just say these were a lot of fun to design!
Space Station Sketch Commission for syntaxcoloring! Graphite and Touch ups in CS6 ~4hrs Putting Dr.Who on while doing the majority of this was a great life decision!
Emergency Commissions!
Tis the season to hork up inordinately large hunks of cash to secure a place to live for the next 12 months. To celebrate, I'm desperately trying to sell some art!
If you have the cash to give, and want some of artstuff of your own, check out what I'm sellin' before my official price guide comes out!
One or two characters, a portrait, a concept, a scene... I don't much care what I draw for you! All pieces will be distributed as a high resolution digital file- if you'd like the original piece, then cost of shipping is on you! Paypal is my preferred payment method.
Sketch- 15$ Digital, graphite or ballpoint pen.
Colored Sketch- 20$ Digital, markers, watercolor, ballpoint pens, and any combination of each
Digital Color- 30$ Lineless, painterly, or digital color on a tight sketch.
Small Animation- 35$ Character, scene, or anything that looks good looping.
Oh wow okay well then- 5$ Throw a prompt at me. Words, a situation, whatever, and I’ll throw a drawing back at you. No promises as to the quality or accuracy of this drawing. Basically you’re just giving me money because you love me.
Other- ?? If you're interested in something else you've seen me do (comics, tattoo designs, longer animations, technical illustrations, graphic design, larger scale projects, etc.) you're welcome to poke me about it!
For more examples of my work, my “official” art tumblr is http://wotkins.tumblr.com
My more casual/older art can be found at http://huhkins.tumblr.com/tagged/mywork If by some chance you’re seeing this, don’t know me IRL, don’t have a tumbumblr, and still want to communicate with me about all the things I could be drawing for you, best send an email to whatwhatwotkins at gmail. Might be best to send an email there anyway. Thanks for readin’<3
Sketches and Roughs Here’s some quick work for ya!
“Why Are You So Angry?” Intro Slides Here are a handful of the slides I did for innuendostudios six part video series “Why Are You So Angry?” These were used in the intro for the first video, where Ian explains this person (Concept? Condition?) called Angry Jack.
(If some of y’all out there haven’t heard of it yet, it’s an abbreviated history on recent games culture as it relates to various topics. It features thoughtful commentary, unpacking where these angry angry people are coming from, and maybe even an inkling of what one could do about it! There have also been a lot of great discussions happening on and off the web, various mentions, and a follow up in its wake. This series is well cited, organized and easy to follow, and I encourage folks to make the time to watch it.) It feels weird to say I enjoyed this project- I’m pleased with the final result, but drawing a lot of scowls means I was more or less just scowling at my computer the whole time I was drawing it.
Three Portraits All done in Photoshop CS6, the middle one using the tilterific pencil brush! I love it so.
Here is a smattering of my portrait work! I thought I’d talk a little about how I use photo references, since all of these were done using multiple photos- a process I’ve arrived at after several years of battling with this “BUT DOES USING A PHOTO AS A REFERENCE COUNT? IS THAT CHEATING?” kind of mentality. People ask me to do portraits of themselves, or loved ones, and frequently we aren’t geographically close enough that I can just meet up with them and draw my own reference material. So, for me, using photo references is absolutely essential. (I am only speaking of portrait work here- all illustrators should be using as many references as possible for everything always. Generally speaking. >>;;; ahem) I rarely ever only use one reference picture. I start my sketch without using one, or loosely basing it on the angle/position of a reference photo, before making my own composition and trying to capture the likeness of the subject. I very deliberately change my illustration from the photo in as many ways as possible. If they wanted something exactly like the picture... then why get a drawing done at all? This usually means me stalking through people’s facebook for hours, before I find one where the eyes and crinkling just right and another one where I can see what’s happening with that area under the chin and have a better idea what one’s hair does normally as well as how they fix it up for events and blah blah blah. It’s time consuming, and I do wonder if all that extra effort I put in is ever reflected on or even noticed by my client, but in the end I feel a lot better about my work for it.
Collection of quickies/fun stuff! Photoshop CS6 Bizarre self portraits, character designs, animootion... Good ol’ fashion fun!
Self Motion-Portrait Photoshop CS6 ~2 hours Itching to stretch those animation muscles, and to play with pixels in photoshop, so I did a little of both. Love this hat, and I kind of like animating it.
Color Extraction Photoshop CS6 and Photo ~4hrs An assignment to take photos and extract colors from one to build a palette for an illustration. I kind of love drawing and shading geometric shapes/rocks, as a side note.
Vertical Panoramic Drawing of the Boston Public Library
14x34 Graphite on Bristol Done for my technical illustration class, this took about an hour and a half or so of observational drawing, and maybe another 8 hours of scaling up a few times and rendering.
Medium-old doodle of Walter White.
Anchored Photoshop CS6 and Kyle T Webster’s Tilterific brush 40 mins I was finally going through Failing Sky and was just so inspired by the wonderful lovely gorgeous art.
Observational and then some Ballpoint pen, graphite, and some sorry attempts to make potato pictures legible with photoshop. ~5-15 mins each
"Daily" Upload #4 Sharpie Pen, digital color ~1hr
Carrie Kelly Watercolor, White gel pen 30 mins
"Daily" Upload #3 Sharpe pen, edited a bit in photoshop cs6 5 mins ea.
