Val Sullivan A Leader In Passionate Wound Care

Val Sullivan, PT, MS, CWS is the clinical manager of Advanced Wound Care Services at Capital Regional Medical Center in Tallahassee, Florida. She is responsible for the clinical aspects and operation of an outpatient wound center, an inpatient wound management program and the only emergent hyperbaric medicine unit in this area. Wound Guru recently had the opportunity to ask Sullivan some interview questions about her roll in wound care.

Starting Points In Wound Care Like many students, Sullivan caught the wound care bug as a physical therapy student. “I was exposed to patients with chronic and acute wounds while working in an acute care setting,” she said. “I was fascinated with this patient population and the potential for healing.” Sullivan started attending continuing education courses in wound care before graduating from PT school and have not stopped since. “As I became more comfortable with my practice, I volunteered in various capacities within several wound care organizations and groups,” she said. “This was not only a way to give back to an area that I care so much about but also broadened my knowledge base and networking capabilities.”

Passion For Wound Care Healing After speaking with Sullivan it becomes very clear that her passion for wound care is sincere and real. “In the outpatient clinic, I enjoy getting to know our patients and families, while developing a relationship with them over the treatment period,” she said. “With wound care as a whole, staying current with the advances in treatment and diagnostic techniques is paramount to a successful career and for me, is constantly challenging.”

Not The Sexiest Niche In Healthcare But Perhaps Wound Care Is The Most Rewarding Sullivan admits that while wound care may not be the sexiest career or section of healthcare there are many benefits for professionals entering this niche. “The practitioners that are involved in caring for patients with chronic wounds are people that are devoted to making a difference in someone's life,” she said. “This creates a very tight knit community always willing to step out on a limb for patients and improve the knowledge base for those that render care.” For any healthcare professionals thinking of entering wound care, Sullivan offers the following advice. “Become involved with your professional organization as well as other wound care associations and groups,” she says. “Reach out to those who write and lecture. Often times they are more than willing to serve as mentors to those who show a true interest in wound management.”

A Lot Of Work Still Left To Do Sullivan says that she is currently paying close attention to the effects of healthcare reform on her patients and practice and the use of an EMR across the healthcare continuum. “I would like to explore more innovative ways to care for those patients that are under or uninsured,” she says. “Reform is coming but we still have a terribly broken healthcare system that allows patients to slip through the cracks and doesn't afford every patient the care that they need.”
