How to Set Up An Altar for Imbolc 🕯️
Imbolc is a call to appreciate the stark beauty of this season. The falling snow, the warm comfort of a cup of tea, and the bright lights of candles are all things I associate with Imbolc.
Like all other sabbats, I like to decorate my fireplace mantle as an altar so that I can appreciate the holiday. I like to start by laying down a simple altar cloth. The colors I associate with Imbolc are white, red, and green so I try to incorporate these colors for my altar set up.
Imbolc is traditionally a festival to honour Brigid, a celtic goddess associated with fire and the hearth. Her presence was such an integral part of rural communities that Christian missionaries could not stop people from honoring her. Instead, Bridget was woven into the Cathloc church as St. Bridget and today many pagans and Catholics alike celebrate her at this time of year.
One of the most popular activities for Imbolc is making a Brigid’s cross out of reeds or grasses. Living in the city, I didn’t have easy access to green reeds so I made some Bridget crosses out of simple pipe cleaners. This is a really easy craft and if you have kids it would be a great way to introduce them to this Pagan holiday.
The term Imboc comes from Imbolg meaning ‘in the belly’. Thus, this time of year is associated with pregnancy and the reawakening of the earth. At this time we welcome the growth of the returning light and witness the earliest stirrings of rebirth. I love lighting lots of candles for my Imbolc altar to symbolize the light reawakening in the world.
Traditionally, festivals honoring Brigid occurred at the beginning of the lambing season. For me, Paganism is all about reconnecting with the land and our agricultural roots, which can sometimes be tricky for me since I live in the city. So, for a simple snack while I work on my altar I got some Sheep’s milk cheese to honor this lambing season.
As Imbolc represents the earliest return of life any type of Spring flower or new growth would be a great element to add to an altar. We don’t have any new plant life yet here in Chicago so I just picked up a simple bouquet of baby’s breath to use for my altar this year.
Lastly, I like to add some tarot cards to my altar that remind me of this particular season. The Empress is a great card to use as she can represent the fertility of the earth. I’m also going to use two Aces - The Ace of Pentacles can represent the earliest stages of new plant and animal life and the Ace of Wands can represent the beginning of a new fiery energy in the world.
♒🌕 AQUARIUS FULL MOON RITUAL 🌕♒
🌌 Tools Needed: Paper, writing tool, room to perform the ritual. Optional: Incense (recommended scents to correspond with Aquarius are: Lavender, Mint, Lemongrass, or Patchouli), Crystals (recommended crystals to correspond with Aquarius are: Amethyst, Angelite, Clear Quartz, Opal), White or Black Candle.
🏺 Cleanse. Start by physically cleaning any mess or clutter in the space you plan to do your ritual. Once the space is physically clean, energetically cleanse as well. Light incense, or burn essential oils (be mindful of what oils you use if you have pets) Visualize any stagnant energy flowing out through doors or windows, leaving the space clean, clear, and purified.
🙌 Move. Get up, stretch, roll your neck and shoulders, stretch your arms as high up as you can, then down to the floor as far as you can. Do some yoga if that’s your thing. Shake, dance, jump around, just move! As you move, breathe deeply and intentionally, in whatever way feels best for you. Notice where your body holds tension and breathe into that space. Visualize the tension flowing out of and away from your body as water or iridescent bubbles. Once your body feels clear of all tension, sit and lay your crystals, if you have any, in front of you. Close your eyes and take four deep, intentional breaths, then open your eyes and begin.
🌬️ Release. Bring to mind what you’d like to let go of, what holds you back, what keeps you stagnant, what no longer has a place in your life. Write it all down, as well as your worries, fears, doubts, and limiting beliefs. After you’ve written them all out, write at the bottom of the paper: “As this moon cycle comes to an end, so do the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors listed above. I release their hold over me. I release them from my life. As the new moon cycle begins, so does a new phase in my life, one free of everything contained on this paper.”
🕯️ Optional. If you have somewhere safe to burn, light a white or black candle and burn the paper in it’s flame. As you do so visualize everything you wrote on the page going up in flame, leaving your life in the form of smoke and ash. Dispose of the ashes outside of your home (either washing them down the drain, or throwing them away in a garbage outside of your home, ensuring the energy does not linger).
🌠 Create. Bring to mind your ideal self, who you would be if you could be anyone. Then write that person out on paper, focusing less on physical appearance and more on physical actions, physical feelings, as well as the mental, emotional, and spiritual state you would be in. What traits would you embody? What traits would you leave behind? What would you think about? How would you feel? How would you spend your days? What work would you do? What would you do for fun? Write all this (and anything else that comes to mind) down on paper.
♾️ Bind. Once you’ve written down your ideal self, write at the bottom of the paper: “As this moon cycle comes to an end, so does my old way of being. I let go of attachment to my current self. I open myself to new and better ways of being. As the new moon cycle begins, so does a new way of being, one of constant growth and positive change.” If you feel called to, ask the moon for help in making the necessary changes to bring your ideal self into being.
🌟 Act. Create a plan to incorporate your ideal self into your current reality. Take at least one concrete step per week towards embodying your ideal self. (If you need help coming up with steps towards your ideal self, feel free to message me! It can be hard to conceptualize at first.) Journal about these steps if you can! At the end of the next moon cycle (September 14), look back on the changes you’ve made, to see how far you’ve come. Continue taking steps as time goes on!

WICCA: SELF-DEDICATION RITUAL
For many modern-day Wiccans, being part of a coven is not an option. You may not live around any other people who share your beliefs, or perhaps you haven’t yet found the group that’s right for you. Or maybe you’ve just decided you enjoy being a solitary, eclectic practitioner. That’s fine, too. However, one of the benefits of being part of a coven or grove is the initiation process. This is a formal ceremony in which one dedicates oneself to the group and to the Divine of the tradition.
If you don’t have a group or High Priest to initiate you, what do you do? Quite simply, you can self-dedicate.
WHAT SHOULD A SELF-DEDICATION INCLUDE?
By the very definition of the word, you can’t initiate yourself, because to initiate requires more than one person. But what you can do is dedicate yourself to your path and to the Divine you have chosen to follow. For many people, doing this as part of a formal ritual helps to cement their relationship with the Divine. Some people choose to wait until they have studied for a year and a day before having a formal self-dedication rite. It’s entirely up to you.
You may want to wait until the time of the new moon to perform this self-dedication, because it is a time of new beginnings. Bear in mind that self-dedication is a commitment you are making; it should not be done at random or without significant thought beforehand.
This goal of this rite is to bring the dedicant closer to the Divine, as well as to declare your connection to your spiritual path.
It’s a pretty important step in your spiritual journey, so you may want to try to include things that make it formal and official in feel and practice.
For instance, you may wish to do a formal preparation with a ritual bath prior to your ceremony. Perhaps you’d like to include altar tools that you’ve crafted yourself - you certainly don’t have to, but if you do, it can make the ritual even more personal and unique.
You might want to choose a new magical name for yourself, so that you can introduce yourself to your Divine with it, as part of this dedication. Finally, if you’re good at memorization, you might want to take some time in advance to memorize as much of this ritual as possible - if you’re worried you might forget what to say, take the time to copy this ritual by hand into your Book of Shadows.
This Blessing Oil should be blended together in advance. To make Blessing Oil, use 1/8 Cup base oil (Safflower, Grapeseed, Jojoba, Sunflower, or Almond) of your choice and add the following:
5 drops Sandalwood
2 drops Camphor
1 drop Orange
1 drop Patchouli
As you blend the oils, visualize your intent, and take in the aroma. Know that this oil is sacred and magical. Label, date, and store in a cool, dark place.
SIMPLE SELF-DEDICATION RITUAL
Keep in mind that this ritual is designed as a template, and you can adapt it or adjust it to meet your own needs or those of the tradition you have created.
You should perform the following ritual skyclad, if at all possible (and if you feel comfortable enough). Find a place that is quiet, private, and free of distractions.
Begin by grounding yourself. Find your inner peace, and become good and relaxed. Shut out all the things from your mundane life that distract you. Focus only on yourself, and the tranquility you’re entitled to.
You will need the following items:
Blessing oil
Salt
A white candle
When you’re ready to proceed, sprinkle the salt on the floor or ground, and stand with your feet upon it.
Light your white candle, and feel the warmth of the flame. Look into the glow of the fire and think about what goals you have for yourself on your spiritual journey. Think about your motivations for performing this self-dedication.
Stand before your altar, and say:
“I am a child of the Divine, and I ask them to bless me.”
Dip your finger into the blessing oil, and with eyes closed, anoint your forehead. Some people do this by tracing a pentagram on the skin with the oil. Say:
“May my mind be blessed, so that I can accept the wisdom of *[the Divine].”
Anoint the eyelids (be careful here!) and say:
“May my eyes be blessed, so I can see my way clearly upon this path.”
Anoint the tip of your nose with the oil, and say:
“May my nose be blessed, so I can breathe in the essence of all that is Divine.”
Anoint your lips, and say:
“May my lips be blessed, so I may always speak with honor and respect.”
Anoint your chest, and say:
“May my heart be blessed, so I may love and be loved.”
Anoint the tops of your hands, and say:
“May my hands be blessed, so that I may use them to heal and help others.”
Anoint your genital area, and say:
“May my womb be blessed, so that I may honor the creation of life.” (If you’re male, make the appropriate changes here.)
Anoint the soles of your feet, and say:
“May my feet be blessed, so that I may walk side by side with [the Divine].”
If you have specific deities you follow, pledge your loyalty to them now.
“Tonight, I pledge my dedication to [the Divine]. I will walk with them beside me, and ask them to guide me on this journey. I pledge to honor them, and ask that they allow me to grow closer to them. As I will, so it shall be.”
Take some time to meditate. Feel the afterglow of the ritual, and feel the energy of [the Divine] within and around you. You have brought yourself to the attention of [the Divine], so they will be keeping an eye on you. Accept the gift of their wisdom.
* = Any “Divine” in brackets should be replaced with the name of your Divine or your concept of the Divine.
