Herminorities: Today is Juneteenth
You’ve seen it everywhere. Well…what does it mean?
Well, as a Herminority I’m here to tell you.
Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. state of Texas, and more generally the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the former Confederate States of America.
My wish isn’t just that slavery is taught in schools, but the irrefutable, innumerable after effects. I’m talking Jim Crow, I’m talking secret lynchings, I’m talking banks refusing to give loans to black business owners. I’m talking the burning of “Black Wallstreet” to the ground in Oklahoma. I’m talking police brutality. I’m talking every single way in which slavery has permeated black people’s lives to this very day. Yes – this very day.
*Deep sigh* the ways in which black people in America are “behind” due to SYSTEMIC racism and aforementioned bigotry is…catastrophic. And yes it is all because of slavery and the aftermath therein. The data is irrefutable. Zoning laws, education, school funding - -all the ways in which white people succeed have been denied to African Americans throughout the course of history. I like the way social media is handling this though. Here’s what’s going on: while the country is working on the long road of understanding reparations –
You can do something today – support a black creator monetarily. It doesn’t have to be me, someone, anyone. Show support to a black creator on this day. Let them buy themselves a damn coffee, bring them back from the soul sucking ledge of explaining systematic and systemic racism and disparity. Support a black creator today.
I am putting my ko-fi below incase anyone does feel so inclined, but the real message is this: we (black people) are literally living in another universe, we weren’t/STLL aren’t even seen as people – as human beings, yet the masses still have the audacity to wonder why our lives are so different from whites, and want us to shut up about inequality. Well, I won’t be silenced.
