[ linette → wren ]: You're bantering! That's a start 😃
[ wren → linette ]: Am I? Well I guess there's some hope for me then.
[ linette → wren ]: Sure 🙂 Let me know. I don't do much outside of work [ linette → wren ]: That sounds sadder than I meant it
[ wren → linette ]: Okay, I'll call and let you know then. [ wren → linette ]: Isn't any worse than not knowing how to get to know your coworkers.
[ linette → wren ]: Great. Let me know when you're free?
[ wren → linette ]: I should be free sometime tomorrow afternoon if you are. Otherwise I need to double check the class schedule.
[ linette → wren ]: Okay
~~a length of time passes between these~~
[ linette → wren ]: Did you want to get coffee or something? Practice some of those friend-making skills?
[ wren → linette ]: Yes, that would be nice.
[ linette → wren ]: Really? What did you do before?
[ wren → linette ]: Nothing too interesting [ wren → linette ]: Some freelance stuff I guess you could say
[ linette → wren ]: I mean you asked me if it's okay to make friends with your coworkers [ linette → wren ]: For all I know this is your first job! [ linette → wren ]: No judgement if it is, btw [ linette → wren ]: You'll do fine
[ wren → linette ]: I guess you could say it's my first job where I have to work with others. [ wren → linette ]: I'm used to working alone. [ wren → linette ]: Appreciate the vote of confidence.
[ linette → wren ]: Is this your first adjunct position? [ linette → wren ]: I don't mean to be rude it just seems like this is your first [ linette → wren ]: Which is fine! We all start somewhere, right?
[ wren → linette ]: That obvious then? [ wren → linette ]: It is. Hopefully I'll end up doing an okay job.
[ linette → wren ]: Sure [ linette → wren ]: Honestly, I'm not sure most students think anything about exams. They're just so used to it [ linette → wren ]: Poor kids.... [ linette → wren ]: Oh
~~there is a big gap between these texts~~
[ linette → wren ]: I don't think so. It's normal to make friends with your colleagues. Or, if not friends, work-friends [ linette → wren ]: Is there someone in particular you were thinking of? I can try to do non-awkward introductions
[ wren → linette ]: I wouldn't say there's anyone in particular. [ wren → linette ]: But it would be nice to get to know more of some of the people I'm working with. You included, of course.
[ linette → wren ]: Sorry! [ linette → wren ]: Well, aren't you a little hard worker? That'll make you popular [ linette → wren ]: No, definitely not. Exams are more of a necessary evil. But it's nice to have a mark in the middle of the term of how far off you are.
[ wren → linette ]: It's fine. Like I said, I like a challenge. [ wren → linette ]: I'm sure the students wouldn't have similar sentiments about that. [ wren → linette ]: Regarding the personal advice... [ wren → linette ]: If someone were interested in getting to know their colleague better, would that be frowned upon?
[ linette → wren ]: Oh god they put you on Menton? That's hazing if I ever heard it [ linette → wren ]: You've got two options. You can steal from someone else and adapt. I like Harris's guide, personally, but it's preference. [ linette → wren ]: Or if you want to actually rework it, group the artists by what war traumatized them, and remember to front-load because no one ever finishes the back half of the syllabus [ linette → wren ]: This term my class is supposed to get through 2/3rds of the content by midterms but I'm already pretty sure we won't get there 😬
[ wren → linette ]: Well that's not great to hear... [ wren → linette ]: I will most likely look over both options. While it'd be easier to use some else's guide, I wouldn't necessarily mind the challenge of reworking it myself. [ wren → linette ]: I appreciate the advice. I will certainly keep it in mind. [ wren → linette ]: It doesn't sound like efficiency and exams make the best partners if that's the case.
[ linette → wren ]: Oh yeah go ahead! [ linette → wren ]: I can't promise I'll be any good with personal stuff but I'll give it a shot [ linette → wren ]: Is this like an outsider perspective thing?
[ wren → linette ]: Yes, just a second opinion. Nothing serious. [ wren → linette ]: Work wise though, I'm trying to rework Professor Menton's pacing guide so it's more organized... He hasn't seemed to laid out anything concrete and flips between eras sporadically. So I was hoping you had a better idea of how to structure things.
[ linette → wren ]: It’s fine [ linette → wren ]: Is it like a work thing or a personal thing?
[ wren → linette ]: A work thing. [ wren → linette ]: But I also wouldn't mind some advice regarding something personal if you're willing to listen. [ wren → linette ]: No offense taken if you prefer not though.
[ wren → linette ]: Good evening. Sorry to bother you, but I had a question regarding something and wondered if you could help.
