When I first noticed the figure that everyone was staring at, I was scared. At the Embarcadero Bart station, there was a hooded small-framed person hunched over in the middle of a sea of people . Being in the city, you learn to keep your guard up and avoid interactions with strange people and everyone at the station made an effort to keep their distance.
But as I, too, watched from afar, I noticed that the hooded person looked like he/she was about to fall so I ran to them. When she turned around, I really didn’t know what to make of the situation. She looked like a corpse; she was skin and bones and her whole body was wrinkly and disfigured. Her body was twisted and she could barely walk.
And so when she told me that she was trying to meet someone upstairs, while I admit it did flash through my mind that it could have been a scam, I felt a push to help her regardless and took hold of her hand. I introduced myself and amidst her heavy breathing, she told me her name was Kris. When we got to the top, she thanked me and told me I could leave, but I told her I wanted to wait with her.
She looked like she was in so much pain.. she would take three deep breaths, close her eyes, and almost fall to the ground. I stood behind her and steadied her until her friend did appear. Before she left though, Kris gave me this long hug and flashed me with this priceless toothless smile.
The whole situation was really really eerie. Like..really I don’t know why she was there by herself in the first place. But God knew it was exactly what I needed. Whenever i’m hurting, God knows that the best way to help me out of it is to take my focus off the battle and back onto Him and His people. To be reminded that there’s a reason why i’m alive today and He’s not done with me yet.
