Journal Series: some pages from my thanksgiving holiday break. In my experience it can be really hard to journal while you’re traveling; you often don’t have the time or energy at the end of the day to sit down and journal, so my favorite method is to gather different memorabilia (Polaroids, postcards, metro tickets, menus, etc) to tape in and jot down some quick memorable things or thoughts about where you went. It’s a quick, simple, and creative way to keep all your memories.

Hi there! I hope this isn't too much to ask, but I need some help. I have a Brendon Urie fc who canonically has parents, an older female cousin, an older brother, and a younger sister. The character himself is 22, the cousin and the brother being anywhere from 24-30, the sister being anywhere from 18-21, and the parents just need to be 45+ probably. You don't have to help with all of them, of course, but any suggestions at all would be much appreciated! Thank you!

Someone one Twitter pointed this out to me (thank you, SpicedRum!) and I had to share it because… damn.  I know I keep harping on this with Arrow, especially when it comes to Felicity and who her father should be and why, but it’s a great reminder. Character Development is not about flashbacks or knowing “where” a character came from and seeing what they did “then,” but from what they do “now,” in the present. 

Backstory doesn’t need to be “seen” or relied on to create a character or define a character in the present because we *see* it in their actions & choices in active, present day story.  All backstory does is create limp, boring, sloggish (and often lazy) narrative for stuff you can’t find a way (or take time to) create in present day story for that character.

There’s nothing wrong with backstory. Treating it as more defining than current activity/required is something I loathe.

Punctuating Dialogue in English: A Fanfiction How-To

Punctuation in fiction can be tricky. There are some things we pick up really easily from reading, but who pays attention to how dialogue is punctuated? Not me! It’s one of those things you don’t think about until you find yourself constructing dialogue of your own, and you just do what seems rightish at the time.

When eager me first wrote and posted fanfiction online (back in 2001), the first thing that happened is that someone commented on it and told me how to punctuate my dialogue. Embarrassing, as I felt like I should have known better, but I am forever grateful to that person for steering me in the right direction. I learned a lot that day. This is me paying it forward.

Small Reminder On Word Choice

I can tell you not to use a Thesaurus when writing your narrative, but that really only means: be wary of it. People are smarter than you think and they can tell when you’ve tried to pretty things up, specially if every word in a single sentence is just a blatant replacement of a much simpler, smaller one. Sometimes even if every word feels like a blatant replacement of a much simpler, smaller one. 

Think intensity. If you need a word stronger than sad, use heartbroken, use depressed, use melancholic, use crestfallen. But this brings me to my next point:

Think context. Heartbroken, depressed, and melancholic are all related to sad, but each can mean very different things; heartbroken, for example, is often linked to the sadness produced by (romantic) separation.
